1 Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del SEÑOR después que Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, lo había dejado libre en Ramá, cuando lo había tomado estando él encadenado entre todos los desterrados de Jerusalén y Judá que iban deportados a Babilonia.

2 Tomó, pues, el capitán de la guardia a Jeremías, y le dijo: El SEÑOR tu Dios decretó esta calamidad contra este lugar,

3 y el SEÑOR la ha traído y hecho tal como había dicho. Porque vosotros pecasteis contra el SEÑOR y no escuchasteis su voz, por tanto os ha sucedido esto.

4 Mas ahora, he aquí, hoy te libro de las cadenas que están en tus manos. Si te parece bien venir conmigo a Babilonia, ven, y yo te cuidaré; pero si te parece mal venir conmigo a Babilonia, no te preocupes. Mira, toda la tierra está delante de ti; ve adonde mejor y más conveniente te parezca ir.

5 Como Jeremías aun no se volvía, le dijo: Vuelve a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, a quien el rey de Babilonia ha puesto para gobernar sobre las ciudades de Judá, y quédate con él en medio del pueblo; y si no, ve adonde te parezca más conveniente ir. Entonces el capitán de la guardia le dio una ración de alimentos y un regalo, y lo dejó ir.

6 Jeremías fue entonces a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, en Mizpa, y se quedó con él en medio del pueblo que había quedado en la tierra.

7 Y todos los jefes de las tropas que estaban en el campo, ellos y sus hombres, oyeron que el rey de Babilonia había puesto a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, para gobernar la tierra, y que le había encomendado los hombres, mujeres y niños y los más pobres de la tierra que no habían sido deportados a Babilonia.

8 Fueron, pues, a Gedalías en Mizpa, junto con Ismael, hijo de Netanías, y Johanán y Jonatán, hijos de Carea, y Seraías, hijo de Tanhumet, y los hijos de Efai netofatita, y Jezanías, hijo de un maacateo, ellos y sus hombres.

9 Entonces Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, les juró a ellos y a sus hombres, diciendo: No temáis servir a los caldeos; quedaos en la tierra y servid al rey de Babilonia, y os irá bien.

10 Y he aquí, por mi parte, yo me quedaré en Mizpa para estar en lugar vuestro delante de los caldeos que vengan a nosotros; pero en cuanto a vosotros, recoged vino y frutos de verano y aceite, y guardadlos en vuestras vasijas, y habitad en vuestras ciudades que habéis tomado.

11 Asimismo todos los judíos que estaban en Moab, y entre los hijos de Amón, y en Edom, y los que estaban en todos los demás países, oyeron que el rey de Babilonia había dejado un remanente en Judá y que había puesto para gobernar sobre ellos a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán.

12 Entonces todos los judíos regresaron de todos los lugares adonde habían sido dispersados, y vinieron a la tierra de Judá, a Gedalías en Mizpa, y recogieron vino y frutos de verano en gran abundancia.

13 Y Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los jefes de las tropas que estaban en el campo vinieron a Gedalías en Mizpa,

14 y le dijeron: ¿Sabes que Baalis, rey de los hijos de Amón, ha enviado a Ismael, hijo de Netanías, para quitarte la vida? Pero Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, no les creyó.

15 Entonces Johanán, hijo de Carea, habló en secreto a Gedalías en Mizpa, diciendo: Déjame ir a matar a Ismael, hijo de Netanías, y nadie lo sabrá. ¿Por qué te ha de quitar la vida y se dispersen así todos los judíos que se han reunido en torno a ti, y perezca el remanente de Judá?

16 Pero Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, dijo a Johanán, hijo de Carea: No hagas eso, porque es mentira lo que dices de Ismael.

The Message Bible MSG

1 God's Message to Jeremiah after Nebuzaradan captain of the bodyguard set him free at Ramah. When Nebuzaradan came upon him, he was in chains, along with all the other captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being herded off to exile in Babylon.

2 The captain of the bodyguard singled out Jeremiah and said to him, "Your God pronounced doom on this place.

3 God came and did what he had warned he'd do because you all sinned against God and wouldn't do what he told you. So now you're all suffering the consequences.

4 "But today, Jeremiah, I'm setting you free, taking the chains off your hands. If you'd like to come to Babylon with me, come along. I'll take good care of you. But if you don't want to come to Babylon with me, that's just fine, too. Look, the whole land stretches out before you. Do what you like. Go and live wherever you wish.

5 If you want to stay home, go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan. The king of Babylon made him governor of the cities of Judah. Stay with him and your people. Or go wherever you'd like. It's up to you." The captain of the bodyguard gave him food for the journey and a parting gift, and sent him off.

6 Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and made his home with him and the people who were left behind in the land. Take Care of the Land

7 When the army leaders and their men, who had been hiding out in the fields, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor of the land, putting him in charge of the men, women, and children of the poorest of the poor who hadn't been taken off to exile in Babylon,

8 they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah: Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite, accompanied by their men.

9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, promised them and their men, "You have nothing to fear from the Chaldean officials. Stay here on the land. Be subject to the king of Babylon. You'll get along just fine.

10 "My job is to stay here in Mizpah and be your advocate before the Chaldeans when they show up. Your job is to take care of the land: Make wine, harvest the summer fruits, press olive oil. Store it all in pottery jugs and settle into the towns that you have taken over."

11 The Judeans who had escaped to Moab, Ammon, Edom, and other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a few survivors in Judah and made Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, governor over them.

12 They all started coming back to Judah from all the places where they'd been scattered. They came to Judah and to Gedaliah at Mizpah and went to work gathering in a huge supply of wine and summer fruits.

13 One day Johanan son of Kareah and all the officers of the army who had been hiding out in the backcountry came to Gedaliah at Mizpah

14 and told him, "You know, don't you, that Baaliss king of Ammon has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to kill you?" But Gedaliah son of Ahikam didn't believe them.

15 Then Johanan son of Kareah took Gedaliah aside privately in Mizpah: "Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah. No one needs to know about it. Why should we let him kill you and plunge the land into anarchy? Why let everyone you've taken care of be scattered and what's left of Judah destroyed?"

16 But Gedaliah son of Ahikam told Johanan son of Kareah, "Don't do it. I forbid it. You're spreading a false rumor about Ishmael."
