1 Pero sucedió que cuando Jeremías terminó de hablar a todo el pueblo todas las palabras del SEÑOR su Dios, es decir, todas estas palabras con las cuales el SEÑOR su Dios le había enviado,

2 Azarías, hijo de Osaías, y Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los hombres arrogantes dijeron a Jeremías: Es mentira lo que dices. El SEÑOR nuestro Dios no te ha enviado a decir: "No debéis entrar en Egipto para residir allí";

3 sino que Baruc, hijo de Nerías, te incita contra nosotros para entregarnos en mano de los caldeos, a fin de que nos maten o nos deporten a Babilonia.

4 No obedeció, pues, Johanán, hijo de Carea, ni ninguno de los jefes de las tropas, ni nadie del pueblo, la voz del SEÑOR, de quedarse en la tierra de Judá,

5 sino que Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los jefes de las tropas, tomaron a todo el remanente de Judá que había vuelto de todas las naciones a las cuales habían sido dispersados, para residir en la tierra de Judá,

6 a hombres, mujeres y niños, a las hijas del rey y a toda persona que Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, había dejado con Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam y nieto de Safán, y también al profeta Jeremías y a Baruc, hijo de Nerías,

7 y entraron en la tierra de Egipto (pues no escucharon la voz del SEÑOR) y se adentraron hasta Tafnes.

8 Entonces vino la palabra del SEÑOR a Jeremías en Tafnes, diciendo:

9 Toma en tus manos piedras grandes y escóndelas en la mezcla en la terraza de ladrillo que está a la entrada del palacio de Faraón en Tafnes, a vista de los judíos,

10 y diles: "Así dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: 'He aquí, enviaré a traer a Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, siervo mío, y pondré su trono sobre estas piedras que he escondido, y él extenderá su pabellón sobre ellas.

11 'Vendrá y herirá la tierra de Egipto; los que sean para la muerte, a la muerte, los que para el cautiverio, al cautiverio, y los que para la espada, a la espada.

12 'Y prenderá fuego a los templos de los dioses de Egipto, los quemará, y se llevará cautivos a sus ídolos. Y se envolverá de la tierra de Egipto como el pastor se envuelve con su capa, y saldrá de allí en paz.

1 When Jeremiah finished telling all the people the whole Message that their God had sent him to give them - all these words -

2 Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah, backed by all the self-important men, said to Jeremiah, "Liar! Our God never sent you with this message telling us not to go to Egypt and live there.

3 Baruch son of Neriah is behind this. He has turned you against us. He's playing into the hands of the Babylonians so we'll either end up being killed or taken off to exile in Babylon."

4 Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers, and the people along with them, wouldn't listen to God's Message that they stay in the land of Judah and live there.

5 Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers gathered up everyone who was left from Judah, who had come back after being scattered all over the place -

6 the men, women, and children, the king's daughters, all the people that Nebuzaradan captain of the bodyguard had left in the care of Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, and last but not least, Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah.

7 They entered the land of Egypt in total disobedience of God's Message and arrived at the city of Tahpanhes.

8 While in Tahpanhes, God's Word came to Jeremiah:

9 "Pick up some large stones and cover them with mortar in the vicinity of the pavement that leads up to the building set aside for Pharaoh's use in Tahpanhes. Make sure some of the men of Judah are watching.

10 "Then address them: 'This is what God-of-the-Angel-Armies says: Be on the lookout! I'm sending for and bringing Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon - my servant, mind you! - and he'll set up his throne on these very stones that I've had buried here and he'll spread out his canopy over them.

11 He'll come and absolutely smash Egypt, sending each to his assigned fate: death, exile, slaughter.

12 He'll burn down the temples of Egypt's gods. He'll either burn up the gods or haul them off as booty. Like a shepherd who picks lice from his robes, he'll pick Egypt clean. And then he'll walk away without a hand being laid on him.

13 He'll shatter the sacred obelisks at Egypt's House of the Sun and make a huge bonfire of the temples of Egypt's gods.'"
