1 The word that came to Yirmeyahu from the LORD in the tenth year of Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah, which was the eighteenth year of Nevukhadretztzar.
1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.
2 Now at that time the king of Bavel's army was besieging Yerushalayim; and Yirmeyahu the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Yehudah's house.
2 The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace of Judah.
3 For Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah had shut him up, saying, Why do you prophesy, and say, Thus says the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Bavel, and he shall take it;
3 Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy as you do? You say, ‘This is what the LORD says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.
4 and Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah shall not escape out of the hand of the Kasdim, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Bavel, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall see his eyes;
4 Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape the Babylonians but will certainly be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes.
5 and he shall bring Tzidkiyahu to Bavel, and there shall he be until I visit him, says the LORD: though you fight with the Kasdim, you shall not prosper?
5 He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him, declares the LORD. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’ ”
6 Yirmeyahu said, The word of the LORD came to me, saying,
6 Jeremiah said, “The word of the LORD came to me:
7 Behold, Hanam'el the son of Shallum your uncle shall come to you, saying, Buy you my field that is in `Anatot; for the right of redemption is yours to buy it.
7 Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it.’
8 So Hanam'el my uncle's son came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of the LORD, and said to me, Please buy my field that is in `Anatot, which is in the land of Binyamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.
8 “Then, just as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.’ “I knew that this was the word of the LORD;
9 I bought the field that was in `Anatot of Hanam'el my uncle's son, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.
9 so I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels of silver.
10 I subscribed the deed, and sealed it, and called witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.
10 I signed and sealed the deed, had it witnessed, and weighed out the silver on the scales.
11 So I took the deed of the purchase, both that which was sealed, containing the terms and conditions, and that which was open;
11 I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy—
12 and I delivered the deed of the purchase to Barukh the son of Neriyah, the son of Mechaseyah, in the presence of Hanam'el my uncle's son, and in the presence of the witnesses who subscribed the deed of the purchase, before all the Yehudim who sat in the court of the guard.
12 and I gave this deed to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.
13 I charged Barukh before them, saying,
13 “In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions:
14 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Yisra'el: Take these deeds, this deed of the purchase which is sealed, and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel; that they may continue many days.
14 ‘This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time.
15 For thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Yisra'el: Houses and fields and vineyards shall yet again be bought in this land.
15 For this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’
16 Now after I had delivered the deed of the purchase to Barukh the son of Neriyah, I prayed to the LORD, saying,
16 “After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD:
17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, you have made the heavens and the eretz by your great power and by your outstretched arm; there is nothing too hard for you,
17 “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.
18 who show lovingkindness to thousands, and recompense the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them; the great, the mighty God, the LORD of Hosts is his name;
18 You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps of their children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the LORD Almighty,
19 great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open on all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:
19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.
20 who did set signs and wonders in the land of Mitzrayim, even to this day, both in Yisra'el and among [other] men; and mad you a name, as at this day;
20 You performed signs and wonders in Egypt and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown that is still yours.
21 and did bring forth your people Yisra'el out of the land of Mitzrayim with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terror;
21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with great terror.
22 and gave them this land, which you did swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey;
22 You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.
23 and they came in, and possessed it, but they didn't obey your voice, neither walked in your law; they have done nothing of all that you commanded them to do: therefore you have caused all this evil to come on them.
23 They came in and took possession of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law; they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster on them.
24 Behold, the mounds, they are come to the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Kasdim who fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence; and what you have spoken has happened; and, behold, you see it.
24 “See how the siege ramps are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague, the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said has happened, as you now see.
25 You have said to me, Lord GOD, Buy you the field for money, and call witnesses; whereas the city is given into the hand of the Kasdim.
25 And though the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, you, Sovereign LORD, say to me, ‘Buy the field with silver and have the transaction witnessed.’ ”
26 Then came the word of the LORD to Yirmeyahu, saying,
26 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?
27 “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?
28 Therefore thus says the LORD: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Kasdim, and into the hand of Nevukhadretztzar king of Bavel, and he shall take it:
28 Therefore this is what the LORD says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will capture it.
29 and the Kasdim, who fight against this city, shall come and set this city on fire, and burn it, with the houses, on whose roofs they have offered incense to Ba`al, and poured out drink-offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.
29 The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down, along with the houses where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods.
30 For the children of Yisra'el and the children of Yehudah have done only that which was evil in my sight from their youth; for the children of Yisra'el have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, says the LORD.
30 “The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth; indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but arouse my anger with what their hands have made, declares the LORD.
31 For this city has been to me a provocation of my anger and of my wrath from the day that they built it even to this day; that I should remove it from before my face,
31 From the day it was built until now, this city has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove it from my sight.
32 because of all the evil of the children of Yisra'el and of the children of Yehudah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their Kohanim, and their prophets, and the men of Yehudah, and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim.
32 The people of Israel and Judah have provoked me by all the evil they have done—they, their kings and officials, their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem.
33 They have turned to me the back, and not the face: and though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to receive instruction.
33 They turned their backs to me and not their faces; though I taught them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.
34 But they set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it.
34 They set up their vile images in the house that bears my Name and defiled it.
35 They built the high places of Ba`al, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through [the fire] to Molekh; which I didn't command them, neither did it come into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Yehudah to sin.
35 They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molek, though I never commanded—nor did it enter my mind—that they should do such a detestable thing and so make Judah sin.
36 Now therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, concerning this city, whereof you say, It is given into the hand of the king of Bavel by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence:
36 “You are saying about this city, ‘By the sword, famine and plague it will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon’; but this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
37 Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries, where I have driven them in my anger, and in my wrath, and in great indignation; and I will bring them again to this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:
37 I will surely gather them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.
38 and they shall be my people, and I will be their God:
38 They will be my people, and I will be their God.
39 and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:
39 I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them.
40 and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from following them, to do them good; and I will put my fear in their hearts, that they may not depart from me.
40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.
41 Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.
41 I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and soul.
42 For thus says the LORD: Like as I have brought all this great evil on this people, so will I bring on them all the good that I have promised them.
42 “This is what the LORD says: As I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised them.
43 Fields shall be bought in this land, whereof you say, It is desolate, without man or animal; it is given into the hand of the Kasdim.
43 Once more fields will be bought in this land of which you say, ‘It is a desolate waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.’
44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe the deeds, and seal them, and call witnesses, in the land of Binyamin, and in the places about Yerushalayim, and in the cities of Yehudah, and in the cities of the hill-country, and in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South: for I will cause their captivity to return, says the LORD.
44 Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed and witnessed in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev, because I will restore their fortunes, declares the LORD.”
