The Complete Jewish Bible CJB
1 This message was given concerning Moab. This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: “What sorrow awaits the city of Nebo; it will soon lie in ruins. The city of Kiriathaim will be humiliated and captured; the fortress will be humiliated and broken down.
1
Concerning Mo'av, this is what ADONAI-Tzva'ot, the God of Isra'el, says: "Woe to N'vo, for it is ravaged; Kiryatayim disgraced and captured. Misgav is put to shame, distressed.
2 No one will ever brag about Moab again, for in Heshbon there is a plot to destroy her. ‘Come,’ they say, ‘we will cut her off from being a nation.’ The town of Madmen, too, will be silenced; the sword will follow you there.
2
"In Mo'av, nothing is left to praise. At Heshbon they plotted her downfall: 'Come, we'll cut her off as a nation.' You too, Madmein, will be silenced; the sword pursues behind you.
3 Listen to the cries from Horonaim, cries of devastation and great destruction.
3
An agonized cry from Horonayim, ruin, terrible devastation!
4 All Moab is destroyed. Her little ones will cry out.
4
Mo'av has been shattered; the cries of her young ones are heard,
5 Her refugees weep bitterly, climbing the slope to Luhith. They cry out in terror, descending the slope to Horonaim.
5
as they ascend the slopes of Luchit, weeping bitterly as they climb. On the road down to Horonayim shrieks of destruction ring out."
6 Flee for your lives! Hide in the wilderness!
6
Flee! Save your lives! Be strong, like a tamarisk in the desert.
7 Because you have trusted in your wealth and skill, you will be taken captive. Your god Chemosh, with his priests and officials, will be hauled off to distant lands!
7
Because you trust in your deeds and your wealth, you too will be captured. Together with his priests and princes, K'mosh will go into exile.
8 “All the towns will be destroyed, and no one will escape— either on the plateaus or in the valleys, for the LORD has spoken.
8
A destroyer will descend on every city, no city will escape. The valley too will perish, the plain will be laid waste, as ADONAI as said.
9 Oh, that Moab had wings so she could fly away, for her towns will be left empty, with no one living in them.
9
Give Mo'av wings, so it can fly and get away. Its cities will become ruins, with no one to live in them.
10 Cursed are those who refuse to do the LORD ’s work, who hold back their swords from shedding blood!
10
A curse on him who does the work of ADONAI carelessly! A curse on him who withholds his sword from blood!
11 “From his earliest history, Moab has lived in peace, never going into exile. He is like wine that has been allowed to settle. He has not been poured from flask to flask, and he is now fragrant and smooth.
11
Mo'av has lived at ease from his youth; he is [wine] settled on its dregs, not decanted from jar to jar - he has not gone into exile. Therefore it retains its own [bad] taste, its aroma remains unchanged.
12 But the time is coming soon,” says the LORD, “when I will send men to pour him from his jar. They will pour him out, then shatter the jar!
12
"So the days are coming," says ADONAI, "when I will send people to tilt him; they will tilt his jars, emptying them and shattering the wine-flasks to pieces.
13 At last Moab will be ashamed of his idol Chemosh, as the people of Israel were ashamed of their gold calf at Bethel.
13
Mo'av will be disappointed by K'mosh then, just as the house of Isra'el was disappointed by Beit-El, a god in whom they had put their trust.
14 “You used to boast, ‘We are heroes, mighty men of war.’
14
"How can you say, 'We are heroes, warriors valiant in battle'?
15 But now Moab and his towns will be destroyed. His most promising youth are doomed to slaughter,” says the King, whose name is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.
15
They are ravaging Mo'av, attacking its cities; its best young men go down to be slaughtered," says the king, whose name is ADONAI-Tzva'ot.
16 “Destruction is coming fast for Moab; calamity threatens ominously.
16
Mo'av's ruin is coming soon, its disaster speeds on swiftly.
17 You friends of Moab, weep for him and cry! See how the strong scepter is broken, how the beautiful staff is shattered!
17
Pity him, all of you who are near him, all of you who know his name; say, "How the mighty scepter is shattered, that splendid staff!"
18 “Come down from your glory and sit in the dust, you people of Dibon, for those who destroy Moab will shatter Dibon, too. They will tear down all your towers.
18
Descend from your glory, and sit in thirst, daughter living in Divon; for Mo'av's destroyer advances on you; he has destroyed your strongholds.
19 You people of Aroer, stand beside the road and watch. Shout to those who flee from Moab, ‘What has happened there?’
19
Stand by the road and watch, inhabitant of 'Aro'er; ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping, "What is going on?"
20 “And the reply comes back, ‘Moab lies in ruins, disgraced; weep and wail! Tell it by the banks of the Arnon River: Moab has been destroyed!’
20
Mo'av is disgraced, indeed, destroyed. Wail aloud! Shriek! Proclaim it by the Arnon that Mo'av has been laid waste.
21 Judgment has been poured out on the towns of the plateau— on Holon and Jahaz and Mephaath,
21
Judgment has come on the Plain - on Holon, Yachtzah, Mefa'at,
22 on Dibon and Nebo and Beth-diblathaim,
22
Divon, N'vo, Beit-Diblatayim,
23 on Kiriathaim and Beth-gamul and Beth-meon,
23
Kiryatayim, Beit-Gamul, Beit-M'on,
24 on Kerioth and Bozrah— all the towns of Moab, far and near.
24
K'riot, Botzrah and all the cities in the land of Mo'av, far and near.
25 “The strength of Moab has ended. His arm has been broken,” says the LORD .
25
"Mo'av's strength is cut down, his arm is broken," says ADONAI.
26 “Let him stagger and fall like a drunkard, for he has rebelled against the LORD . Moab will wallow in his own vomit, ridiculed by all.
26
Because Mo'av boasted against ADONAI, make him so drunk that he wallows in his own vomit and becomes a laughingstock.
27 Did you not ridicule the people of Israel? Were they caught in the company of thieves that you should despise them as you do?
27
After all, Isra'el was a laughingstock for you. He didn't associate with thieves; nevertheless, whenever you spoke of him, you shook your head.
28 “You people of Moab, flee from your towns and live in the caves. Hide like doves that nest in the clefts of the rocks.
28
You who live in Mo'av, leave the cities, and live on the rocks; be like the dove who makes her nest in a hole in the rock at the mouth of a cave.
29 We have all heard of the pride of Moab, for his pride is very great. We know of his lofty pride, his arrogance, and his haughty heart.
29
We have heard of the pride of Mo'av: so very proud he is! - presumptuous, proud, conceited; so haughty his heart!
30 I know about his insolence,” says the LORD, “but his boasts are empty— as empty as his deeds.
30
"I know what meager ground he has for his arrogance," says ADONAI. "His boasting has nothing behind it, and it hasn't accomplished a thing."
31 So now I wail for Moab; yes, I will mourn for Moab. My heart is broken for the men of Kir-hareseth.
31
Therefore I wail for Mo'av; for all Mo'av I cry; for the people of Kir-Heres I lament.
32 “You people of Sibmah, rich in vineyards, I will weep for you even more than I did for Jazer. Your spreading vines once reached as far as the Dead Sea, but the destroyer has stripped you bare! He has harvested your grapes and summer fruits.
32
I will weep for you, vineyard of Sivmah, more than I wept for Ya'zer. Your branches spread to the sea, reaching as far as the sea of Ya'zer. On your summer fruits and on your vintage the destroyer has fallen.
33 Joy and gladness are gone from fruitful Moab. The presses yield no wine. No one treads the grapes with shouts of joy. There is shouting, yes, but not of joy.
33
Gladness and joy have been removed from productive fields and the land of Mo'av. "I have stopped the flow of wine from the vats and the shouts of those who tread the grapes - those shouts of joy are stilled."
34 “Instead, their awful cries of terror can be heard from Heshbon clear across to Elealeh and Jahaz; from Zoar all the way to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. Even the waters of Nimrim are dried up now.
34
The cries from Heshbon to El'aleh are heard as far away as Yachatz; those from Tzo'ar to Horonayim are heard in 'Eglat-Shlishiyah; for even the waters of Nimrim have become a desolate waste.
35 “I will put an end to Moab,” says the LORD, “for the people offer sacrifices at the pagan shrines and burn incense to their false gods.
35
"Moreover," says ADONAI, "in Mo'av I will put an end to anyone sacrificing on a high place or offering incense to his gods."
36 My heart moans like a flute for Moab and Kir-hareseth, for all their wealth has disappeared.
36
This is why my heart is moaning for Mo'av like funeral flutes, why my heart moans for the men of Kir-Heres like funeral flutes; for the wealth they produced has vanished.
37 The people shave their heads and beards in mourning. They slash their hands and put on clothes made of burlap.
37
Every head has been shaved bald, every beard has been clipped short, gashes are on every hand, sackcloth around every waist.
38 There is crying and sorrow in every Moabite home and on every street. For I have smashed Moab like an old, unwanted jar.
38
On all the housetops of Mo'av and in its open places - lamentation everywhere! "For I have broken Mo'av like a pot that nobody wants," says ADONAI.
39 How it is shattered! Hear the wailing! See the shame of Moab! It has become an object of ridicule, an example of ruin to all its neighbors.”
39
Wail, "How shattered is Mo'av! How shamefully in retreat!" Thus will Mo'av become an object of ridicule and distress to all its neighbors.
40 This is what the LORD says: “Look! The enemy swoops down like an eagle, spreading his wings over Moab.
40
For here is what ADONAI says: "Look! Down he swoops like a vulture, spreading his wings against Mo'av
41 Its cities will fall, and its strongholds will be seized. Even the mightiest warriors will be in anguish like a woman in labor.
41
the cities are captured, the strongholds are seized. On that day the hearts of Mo'av's warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
42 Moab will no longer be a nation, for it has boasted against the LORD .
42
Mo'av will be destroyed as a people, because he boasted against ADONAI.
43 “Terror and traps and snares will be your lot, O Moab,” says the LORD .
43
Terror, pit and trap are upon you, people of Mo'av," says ADONAI.
44 “Those who flee in terror will fall into a trap, and those who escape the trap will step into a snare. I will see to it that you do not get away, for the time of your judgment has come,” says the LORD .
44
"Whoever flees from the terror will fall into the pit; and he who climbs up out of the pit will be caught in the trap. For I will bring on her, on Mo'av, the year for her punishment," says ADONAI.
45 “The people flee as far as Heshbon but are unable to go on. For a fire comes from Heshbon, King Sihon’s ancient home, to devour the entire land with all its rebellious people.
45
"In the shadow of Heshbon the fugitives stop, exhausted. For fire breaks out from Heshbon, a flame from inside Sichon, consuming the sides and tops of the heads of Mo'av's noisy boasters.
46 “What sorrow awaits you, O people of Moab! The people of the god Chemosh are destroyed! Your sons and your daughters have been taken away as captives.
46
Woe to you, Mo'av! K'mosh's people are doomed! For your sons have been taken captive, and your daughters led into captivity.
47 But I will restore the fortunes of Moab in days to come. I, the LORD, have spoken!” This is the end of Jeremiah’s prophecy concerning Moab.
47
Yet I will end Mo'av's exile in the acharit-hayamim," says ADONAI. This is the judgment on Mo'av.
