New Living Translation NLT
The Complete Jewish Bible CJB
1 “Run for your lives, you people of Benjamin! Get out of Jerusalem! Sound the alarm in Tekoa! Send up a signal at Beth-hakkerem! A powerful army is coming from the north, coming with disaster and destruction.
1
"Head for cover, people of Binyamin, get out of Yerushalayim! Blow the shofar in T'koa, light the beacon on Beit-Hakerem. For disaster threatens from the north, with great destruction.
2 O Jerusalem, you are my beautiful and delicate daughter— but I will destroy you!
2
Although she is beautiful and delicate, I am cutting off the daughter of Tziyon."
3 Enemies will surround you, like shepherds camped around the city. Each chooses a place for his troops to devour.
3
Shepherds advance on her with their flocks; all around her they pitch their tents, each grazing his own plot of pasture.
4 They shout, ‘Prepare for battle! Attack at noon!’ ‘No, it’s too late; the day is fading, and the evening shadows are falling.’
4
"Prepare for war against her! Get up! Let's attack at noon!" "Woe to us! for the day is waning, evening shadows are lengthening."
5 ‘Well then, let’s attack at night and destroy her palaces!’”
5
"Get up! Let's attack at night! Let's destroy her palaces!"
6 This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: “Cut down the trees for battering rams. Build siege ramps against the walls of Jerusalem. This is the city to be punished, for she is wicked through and through.
6
For ADONAI-Tzva'ot says this: "Cut down her trees, and raise a siege-ramp against Yerushalayim! This is the city to be punished; in her there is nothing but oppression.
7 She spouts evil like a fountain. Her streets echo with the sounds of violence and destruction. I always see her sickness and sores.
7
Just as a cistern keeps its water fresh, so she keeps her wickedness fresh! Violence and destruction are heard within her, always before me sickness and wounds.
8 Listen to this warning, Jerusalem, or I will turn from you in disgust. Listen, or I will turn you into a heap of ruins, a land where no one lives.”
8
Accept correction, Yerushalayim, or I will be estranged from you and turn you into a desolate waste, a land without inhabitants."
9 This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: “Even the few who remain in Israel will be picked over again, as when a harvester checks each vine a second time to pick the grapes that were missed.”
9
Thus says ADONAI-Tzva'ot: "They will glean the remnant of Isra'el as thoroughly as in a vineyard - one last time, like a grape-picker, pass your hand over the vines."
10 To whom can I give warning? Who will listen when I speak? Their ears are closed, and they cannot hear. They scorn the word of the LORD . They don’t want to listen at all.
10
To whom should I speak? Whom should I warn? Who will listen to me? Their ears are dull, they can't pay attention. For them the word of ADONAI has become unattractive, an object of scorn.
11 So now I am filled with the LORD ’s fury. Yes, I am tired of holding it in! “I will pour out my fury on children playing in the streets and on gatherings of young men, on husbands and wives and on those who are old and gray.
11
This is why I am full of ADONAI's fury; I am weary of holding it back. "Pour it out on the children in the street and on the groups of young men gathered; for husbands and wives will be taken together, seniors as well as the very old.
12 Their homes will be turned over to their enemies, as will their fields and their wives. For I will raise my powerful fist against the people of this land,” says the LORD .
12
Their homes will be turned over to others, their fields together with their wives. Yes, I will stretch out my hand against those who are living in the land," says ADONAI.
13 “From the least to the greatest, their lives are ruled by greed. From prophets to priests, they are all frauds.
13
"For from the least to the greatest of them, all are greedy for gains; prophets and cohanim alike, they all practice fraud
14 They offer superficial treatments for my people’s mortal wound. They give assurances of peace when there is no peace.
14
they dress the wound of my people, but only superficially, saying, 'There is perfect shalom,' when there is no shalom.
15 Are they ashamed of their disgusting actions? Not at all—they don’t even know how to blush! Therefore, they will lie among the slaughtered. They will be brought down when I punish them,” says the LORD .
15
"They should be ashamed of their detestable deeds, but they are not ashamed at all; they don't know how to blush. Therefore when others fall, they too will fall; when I punish them, they will stumble," says ADONAI.
16 This is what the LORD says: “Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. But you reply, ‘No, that’s not the road we want!’
16
Here is what ADONAI says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask about the ancient paths, 'Which one is the good way?' Take it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not take it.'
17 I posted watchmen over you who said, ‘Listen for the sound of the alarm.’ But you replied, ‘No! We won’t pay attention!’
17
I appointed sentinels to direct them: 'Listen for the sound of the shofar.' But they said, 'We will not listen.'
18 “Therefore, listen to this, all you nations. Take note of my people’s situation.
18
So hear, you nations; know, you assembly, what there is against them.
19 Listen, all the earth! I will bring disaster on my people. It is the fruit of their own schemes, because they refuse to listen to me. They have rejected my word.
19
Hear, oh earth! I am going to bring disaster on this people; it is the consequence of their own way of thinking; for they pay no attention to my words; and as for my Torah, they reject it.
20 There’s no use offering me sweet frankincense from Sheba. Keep your fragrant calamus imported from distant lands! I will not accept your burnt offerings. Your sacrifices have no pleasing aroma for me.”
20
What do I care about incense from Sh'va or sweet cane from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are unacceptable, your sacrifices don't please me."
21 Therefore, this is what the LORD says: “I will put obstacles in my people’s path. Fathers and sons will both fall over them. Neighbors and friends will die together.”
21
Therefore thus says ADONAI: "I will put obstacles in the way of this people that they will stumble over fathers and sons, neighbors and friends, all will perish together."
22 This is what the LORD says: “Look! A great army coming from the north! A great nation is rising against you from far-off lands.
22
Here is what ADONAI says: "A people is coming from the land of the north, a great nation will be aroused from the ends of the earth.
23 They are armed with bows and spears. They are cruel and show no mercy. They sound like a roaring sea as they ride forward on horses. They are coming in battle formation, planning to destroy you, beautiful Jerusalem. ”
23
They will take hold of bow and spear; they are cruel; they have no compassion: their noise as they ride on horses is like the roaring sea; and they are equipped for battle against you, daughter of Tziyon.
24 We have heard reports about the enemy, and we wring our hands in fright. Pangs of anguish have gripped us, like those of a woman in labor.
24
'We have heard the news, and our hands fall limp; anguish has seized us, pain like a mother's in childbirth.'"
25 Don’t go out to the fields! Don’t travel on the roads! The enemy’s sword is everywhere and terrorizes us at every turn!
25
Don't go into the countryside, don't walk out on the road; for the sword of the enemy is spreading terror in every direction.
26 Oh, my people, dress yourselves in burlap and sit among the ashes. Mourn and weep bitterly, as for the loss of an only son. For suddenly the destroying armies will be upon you!
26
Daughter of my people, put on sackcloth, roll in ashes, mourn as if for an only son, wail most bitterly; for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.
27 “Jeremiah, I have made you a tester of metals, that you may determine the quality of my people.
27
"I have made you a refiner and tester of my people, to know and test how they behave.
28 They are the worst kind of rebel, full of slander. They are as hard as bronze and iron, and they lead others into corruption.
28
All of them are total rebels, spreading slanderous gossip; they are bronze and iron, [inferior metals,] all of them corrupt.
29 The bellows fiercely fan the flames to burn out the corruption. But it does not purify them, for the wickedness remains.
29
The bellows blast away; and though the lead is consumed by the fire, in vain has the smelter refined, for the wicked have not been separated.
30 I will label them ‘Rejected Silver,’ for I, the LORD, am discarding them.”
30
They are called 'rejected silver,' because ADONAI has rejected them."
