1 Doch nicht bleibt Finsternis dem Lande, welches Bedrängnis hat. Um die erste Zeit hat er das Land Sebulon und das Land Naphtali verächtlich gemacht; und in der letzten bringt er zu Ehren den Weg am Meere, das Jenseitige des Jordan, den Kreis der Nationen.

But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
2 Das Volk, das im Finstern wandelt, hat ein großes Licht gesehen; die da wohnen im Lande des Todesschattens, Licht hat über sie geleuchtet.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined.
3 Du hast die Nation vermehrt, hast ihr groß gemacht die Freude; sie freuen sich vor dir, gleich der Freude in der Ernte, wie man frohlockt beim Verteilen der Beute.

You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder.
4 Denn das Joch ihrer Last und den Stab ihrer Schulter, den Stock ihres Treibers hast du zerschlagen wie am Tage Midians.

For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
5 Denn jeder Stiefel der Gestiefelten im Getümmel, und jedes Gewand, in Blut gewälzt, die werden zum Brande, ein Fraß des Feuers.

For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
6 Denn ein Kind ist uns geboren, ein Sohn uns gegeben, und die Herrschaft ruht auf seiner Schulter; und man nennt seinen Namen: Wunderbarer, Berater, starker Gott, Vater der Ewigkeit, Friedefürst.

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Die Mehrung der Herrschaft und der Friede werden kein Ende haben auf dem Throne Davids und über sein Königreich, um es zu befestigen und zu stützen durch Gericht und durch Gerechtigkeit, von nun an bis in Ewigkeit. Der Eifer Jehovas der Heerscharen wird dieses tun.

His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
8 Der Herr hat ein Wort gesandt wider Jakob, und es steigt hernieder in Israel.

The Lord sent a word against Jacob, and it fell on Israel;
9 Und das ganze Volk wird es erfahren, Ephraim und die Bewohner von Samaria, die in Hochmut und in Überhebung des Herzens sprechen:

and all the people knew it— Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria— but in pride and arrogance of heart they said:
10 Die Ziegelsteine sind eingefallen, aber mit behauenen Steinen bauen wir auf; die Sykomoren sind abgehauen, aber wir setzen Zedern an ihre Stelle.

"The bricks have fallen, but we will build with dressed stones; the sycamores have been cut down, but we will put cedars in their place."
11 Denn Jehova wird die Bedränger Rezins über dasselbe erheben und seine Feinde aufreizen:

So the Lord raised adversaries against them, and stirred up their enemies,
12 die Syrer von Osten und die Philister von Westen; und sie werden Israel fressen mit vollem Maule. Bei dem allen wendet sich sein Zorn nicht ab, und noch ist seine Hand ausgestreckt.

the Arameans on the east and the Philistines on the west, and they devoured Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is stretched out still.
13 Und das Volk kehrt nicht um zu dem, der es schlägt, und Jehova der Heerscharen suchen sie nicht.

The people did not turn to him who struck them, or seek the Lord of hosts.
14 Und Jehova wird aus Israel Haupt und Schwanz, Palmzweig und Binse ausrotten an einem Tage.

So the Lord cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed in one day—
15 Der Älteste und Angesehene, er ist das Haupt; und der Prophet, der Lüge lehrt, er ist der Schwanz.

elders and dignitaries are the head, and prophets who teach lies are the tail;
16 Denn die Leiter dieses Volkes führen irre, und die von ihnen Geleiteten werden verschlungen.

for those who led this people led them astray, and those who were led by them were left in confusion.
17 Darum wird sich der Herr über dessen Jünglinge nicht freuen, und seiner Waisen und seiner Witwen sich nicht erbarmen; denn sie allesamt sind Ruchlose und Übeltäter, und jeder Mund redet Torheit. Bei dem allen wendet sich sein Zorn nicht ab, und noch ist seine Hand ausgestreckt.

That is why the Lord did not have pity on their young people, or compassion on their orphans and widows; for everyone was godless and an evildoer, and every mouth spoke folly. For all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is stretched out still.
18 Denn die Gesetzlosigkeit brennt wie Feuer: sie verzehrt Dornen und Disteln, und zündet in den Dickichten des Waldes, daß sie emporwirbeln in hoch aufsteigendem Rauche.

For wickedness burned like a fire, consuming briers and thorns; it kindled the thickets of the forest, and they swirled upward in a column of smoke.
19 Durch den Grimm Jehovas der Heerscharen ist das Land verbrannt, und das Volk ist wie eine Speise des Feuers geworden; keiner schont den anderen.

Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land was burned, and the people became like fuel for the fire; no one spared another.
20 Und man schlingt zur Rechten und hungert, und man frißt zur Linken und wird nicht satt. Sie fressen ein jeder das Fleisch seines eigenen Armes:

They gorged on the right, but still were hungry, and they devoured on the left, but were not satisfied; they devoured the flesh of their own kindred;
21 Manasse den Ephraim, und Ephraim den Manasse; diese miteinander fallen über Juda her. Bei dem allen wendet sich sein Zorn nicht ab, und noch ist seine Hand ausgestreckt.

Manasseh devoured Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh, and together they were against Judah. For all this his anger has not turned away; his hand is stretched out still.
