Job 26

NCV

CJB

1 Then Job answered:
1 Then Iyov replied,
2 "You are no help to the helpless! You have not aided the weak!
2 "What great help you bring to the powerless! what deliverance to the arm without strength!
3 Your advice lacks wisdom! You have shown little understanding!
3 Such wonderful advice for a man lacking wisdom! So much common sense you've expressed!
4 Who has helped you say these words? And where did you get these ideas?
4 Who helped you to say these words? Whose spirit is it, coming forth from you?
5 "The spirits of the dead tremble, those who are beneath and in the waters.
5 "The ghosts of the dead tremble beneath the water, with its creatures.
6 Death is naked before God; destruction is uncovered before him.
6 Sh'ol is naked before him; Abaddon lies uncovered.
7 God stretches the northern sky out over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing.
7 He stretches the north over chaos and suspends the earth on nothing.
8 He wraps up the waters in his thick clouds, but the clouds do not break under their weight.
8 He binds up the water in his thick clouds, yet no cloud is torn apart by it.
9 He covers the face of the moon, spreading his clouds over it.
9 He shuts off the view of his throne by spreading his cloud across it.
10 He draws the horizon like a circle on the water at the place where light and darkness meet.
10 He fixed a circle on the surface of the water, defining the boundary between light and dark.
11 Heaven's foundations shake when he thunders at them.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble, aghast at his rebuke.
12 With his power he quiets the sea; by his wisdom he destroys Rahab, the sea monster.
12 He stirs up the sea with his power, and by his skill he strikes down Rahav.
13 He breathes, and the sky clears. His hand stabs the fleeing snake.
13 With his Spirit he spreads the heavens; his hand pierces the fleeing serpent.
14 And these are only a small part of God's works. We only hear a small whisper of him.
14 And these are but the fringes of his ways; how faint the echo we hear of him! But who is able to grasp the meaning of his thundering power?"
