1 Y reanudó Job su discurso, y dijo:

2 ¡Quién me diera volver a ser como en meses pasados, como en los días en que Dios velaba sobre mí;

3 cuando su lámpara resplandecía sobre mi cabeza, y a su luz caminaba yo en las tinieblas;

4 como era yo en los días de mi juventud , cuando el favor de Dios estaba sobre mi tienda;

5 cuando el Todopoderoso estaba aún conmigo, y mis hijos en derredor mío;

6 cuando en leche se bañaban mis pies, y la roca me derramaba ríos de aceite!

7 Cuando yo salía a la puerta de la ciudad, cuando en la plaza tomaba mi asiento,

8 me veían los jóvenes y se escondían, y los ancianos se levantaban y permanecían en pie.

9 Los príncipes dejaban de hablar y ponían la mano sobre su boca;

10 la voz de los nobles se apagaba, y la lengua se les pegaba al paladar.

11 Porque el oído que oía me llamaba bienaventurado, y el ojo que veía daba testimonio de mí;

12 porque yo libraba al pobre que clamaba, y al huérfano que no tenía quien le ayudara.

13 Venía sobre mí la bendición del que estaba a punto de perecer, y el corazón de la viuda llenaba de gozo.

14 De justicia me vestía, y ella me cubría; como manto y turbante era mi derecho.

15 Ojos era yo para el ciego, y pies para el cojo.

16 Padre era para los necesitados, y examinaba la causa que no conocía.

17 Quebraba los colmillos del impío, y de sus dientes arrancaba la presa.

18 Entonces pensaba: "En mi nido moriré, y multiplicaré mis días como la arena.

19 "Mi raíz se extiende hacia las aguas, y el rocío se posa de noche en mi rama.

20 "Conmigo es siempre nueva mi gloria, y mi arco en mi mano se renueva."

21 Me escuchaban y esperaban, y guardaban silencio para oír mi consejo.

22 Después de mis palabras no hablaban de nuevo, y sobre ellos caía gota a gota mi discurso.

23 Me esperaban como a la lluvia, y abrían su boca como a lluvia de primavera.

24 Yo les sonreía cuando ellos no creían, y no abatían la luz de mi rostro.

25 Les escogía el camino y me sentaba como jefe, y moraba como rey entre las tropas, como el que consuela a los que lloran.

1 Job now resumed his response:

2 "Oh, how I long for the good old days, when God took such very good care of me.

3 He always held a lamp before me and I walked through the dark by its light.

4 Oh, how I miss those golden years when God's friendship graced my home,

5 When the Mighty One was still by my side and my children were all around me,

6 When everything was going my way, and nothing seemed too difficult.

7 "When I walked downtown and sat with my friends in the public square,

8 Young and old greeted me with respect; I was honored by everyone in town.

9 When I spoke, everyone listened;

10 they hung on my every word.

11 People who knew me spoke well of me; my reputation went ahead of me.

12 I was known for helping people in trouble and standing up for those who were down on their luck.

13 The dying blessed me, and the bereaved were cheered by my visits.

14 All my dealings with people were good. I was known for being fair to everyone I met.

15 I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame,

16 Father to the needy, and champion of abused aliens.

17 I grabbed street thieves by the scruff of the neck and made them give back what they'd stolen.

18 I thought, 'I'll die peacefully in my own bed, grateful for a long and full life,

19 A life deep-rooted and well-watered, a life limber and dew-fresh,

20 My soul suffused with glory and my body robust until the day I die.'

21 "Men and women listened when I spoke, hung expectantly on my every word.

22 After I spoke, they'd be quiet, taking it all in.

23 They welcomed my counsel like spring rain, drinking it all in.

24 When I smiled at them, they could hardly believe it; their faces lit up, their troubles took wing!

25 I was their leader, establishing the mood and setting the pace by which they lived. Where I led, they followed.
