Job 31

NCV

CJB

1 "But I made an agreement with my eyes not to look with desire at a girl.
1 "I made a covenant with my eyes not to let them lust after any girl.
2 What has God above promised for people?
2 "What share does God give from above? What is the heritage from Shaddai on high?
3 It is ruin for evil people and disaster for those who do wrong.
3 Isn't it calamity to the unrighteous? disaster to those who do evil?
4 God sees my ways and counts every step I take.
4 Doesn't he see my ways and count all my steps?
5 "If I have been dishonest or lied to others,
5 "If I have gone along with falsehood, if my feet have hurried to deceit;
6 then let God weigh me on honest scales. Then he will know I have done nothing wrong.
6 then let me be weighed on an honest scale, so that God will know my integrity.
7 If I have turned away from doing what is right, or my heart has been led by my eyes to do wrong, or my hands have been made unclean,
7 "If my steps have wandered from the way, if my heart has followed my eyes, if the least dirt has stuck to my hands;
8 then let other people eat what I have planted, and let my crops be plowed up.
8 then let me sow and someone else eat, let what grows from my fields be uprooted.
9 "If I have desired another woman or have waited at my neighbor's door for his wife,
9 "If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;
10 then let my wife grind another man's grain, and let other men have sexual relations with her.
10 then let my wife grind for another man, and let others kneel on her.
11 That would be shameful, a sin to be punished.
11 For that would be a heinous act, a criminal offense,
12 It is like a fire that burns and destroys; all I have done would be plowed up.
12 a fire that would burn to the depths of Abaddon, uprooting all I produce.
13 "If I have been unfair to my male and female slaves when they had a complaint against me,
13 "If I ever rejected my slave or slave-girl's cause, when they brought legal action against me;
14 how could I tell God what I did? What will I answer when he asks me to explain what I've done?
14 then what would I do if God stood up? Were he to intervene, what answer could I give?
15 God made me in my mother's womb, and he also made them; the same God formed both of us in our mothers' wombs.
15 Didn't he who made me in the womb make them too? Didn't the same one shape us both before our birth?
16 "I have never refused the appeals of the poor or let widows give up hope while looking for help.
16 "If I held back anything needed by the poor or made a widow's eye grow dim [with tears],
17 I have not kept my food to myself but have given it to the orphans.
17 or ate my portion of food by myself, without letting the orphan eat any of it
18 Since I was young, I have been like a father to the orphans. From my birth I guided the widows.
18 No! From my youth he grew up with me as if with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother's womb!
19 I have not let anyone die for lack of clothes or let a needy person go without a coat.
19 or if I saw a traveler needing clothing, someone in need who had no covering,
20 That person's heart blessed me, because I warmed him with the wool of my sheep.
20 who didn't bless me from his heart for being warmed with the fleece from my sheep,
21 I have never hurt an orphan even when I knew I could win in court.
21 or if I lifted my hand against an orphan, knowing that no one would dare charge me in court;
22 If I have, then let my arm fall off my shoulder and be broken at the joint.
22 then let my arm fall from its socket, and let my forearm be broken at the elbow!
23 I fear destruction from God, and I fear his majesty, so I could not do such things.
23 For calamity from God has always terrified me; before his majesty I could never do a thing [like that].
24 "I have not put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, 'You are my security.'
24 "If I made gold my hope, if I said to fine gold, 'You are my security,'
25 I have not celebrated my great wealth or the riches my hands had gained.
25 if I took joy in my great wealth, in my having acquired so much;
26 I have not thought about worshiping the sun in its brightness nor admired the moon moving in glory
26 or if, on seeing the shining sun or the full moon as it moved through the sky,
27 so that my heart was pulled away from God. My hand has never offered the sun and moon a kiss of worship.
27 my heart was secretly seduced, so that I would wave them a kiss with my hand;
28 If I had, these also would have been sins to be punished, because I would have been unfaithful to God.
28 then this too would be a criminal offense, for I would have been lying to God on high.
29 "I have not been happy when my enemy fell or laughed when he had trouble.
29 "Did I rejoice at the destruction of him who hated me? Was I filled with glee when disaster overtook him?
30 I have not let my mouth sin by cursing my enemy's life.
30 No, I did not allow my mouth to sin by asking for his life with a curse.
31 The men of my house have always said, 'Everyone has eaten all he wants of Job's food.'
31 "Was there anyone in my tent who didn't say, 'No one can find a single person whom he has not filled with his meat'?
32 No stranger ever had to spend the night in the street, because I always let travelers stay in my home.
32 No stranger had to sleep in the street; I kept my house open to the traveler.
33 I have not hidden my sin as others do, secretly keeping my guilt to myself.
33 "If I concealed my sins, as most people do, by hiding my wrongdoing in my heart,
34 I was not so afraid of the crowd that I kept quiet and stayed inside because I feared being hated by other families.
34 from fear of general gossip or dread of some family's contempt. keeping silent and not going outdoors
35 ("How I wish a court would hear my case! Here I sign my name to show I have told the truth. Now let the Almighty answer me; let the one who accuses me write it down.
35 I wish I had someone who would listen to me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me! I wish I had the indictment my adversary has written!
36 I would wear the writing on my shoulder; I would put it on like a crown.
36 I would carry it on my shoulder; I would bind it on me like a crown.
37 I would explain to God every step I took, and I would come near to him like a prince.)
37 I would declare to him every one of my steps; I would approach him like a prince.
38 "If my land cries out against me and its plowed rows are not wet with tears,
38 "If my land cried out against me, if its furrows wept together,
39 if I have taken the land's harvest without paying or have broken the spirit of those who worked the land,
39 if I ate its produce without paying or made its owners despair;
40 then let thorns come up instead of wheat, and let weeds come up instead of barley." The words of Job are finished.
40 then let thistles grow instead of wheat and noxious weeds instead of barley! "The words of Iyov are finished."
