The Complete Jewish Bible CJB
1 "Now, Job, listen to my words. Pay attention to everything I say.
1
"So, Iyov, please, hear my speech; listen to all my words.
2 I open my mouth and am ready to speak.
2
Look, I am opening my mouth; the words are on the tip of my tongue.
3 My words come from an honest heart, and I am sincere in saying what I know.
3
I will say exactly what is on my mind; what my lips know, they will speak sincerely.
4 The Spirit of God created me, and the breath of the Almighty gave me life.
4
It is the Spirit of God that made me, the breath of Shaddai that gives me life.
5 Answer me if you can; get yourself ready and stand before me.
5
So refute me, if you can; organize your words, take your stand!
6 I am just like you before God; I too am made out of clay.
6
Look, before God I'm the same as you; I too am fashioned from clay.
7 Don't be afraid of me; I will not be hard on you.
7
You don't need to be afraid of me; my pressure on you will not be heavy.
8 "But I heard what you have said; I heard every word.
8
"You spoke within my hearing, and I heard what you said -
9 You said, 'I am pure and without sin; I am innocent and free from guilt.
9
'I am clean, without transgression; I am innocent, not guilty.
10 But God has found fault with me; he considers me his enemy.
10
Yet [God] finds pretexts for accusing me; he regards me as his enemy.
11 He locks my feet in chains and closely watches everywhere I go.'
11
He puts my feet in the stocks and watches wherever I go.'
12 "But I tell you, you are not right in saying this, because God is greater than we are.
12
"But in this, you are wrong; I will answer you: God is greater than any mortal.
13 Why do you accuse God of not answering anyone?
13
Why do you strive against him? He will not defend his words
14 God does speak -- sometimes one way and sometimes another -- even though people may not understand it.
14
God speaks once, even twice, and still the hearer misses the point.
15 He speaks in a dream or a vision of the night when people are in a deep sleep, lying on their beds.
15
"In a dream, in a vision at night, when slumber falls upon people, as they sleep in their beds,
16 He speaks in their ears and frightens them with warnings
16
he opens people's ears and seals the matter with a warning,
17 to turn them away from doing wrong and to keep them from being proud.
17
to turn a person away from his action and protect a man from pride,
18 God does this to save a person from death, to keep him from dying.
18
so that he will keep himself away from the pit and from perishing by the sword.
19 A person may be corrected while in bed in great pain; he may have continual pain in his very bones.
19
"He is also warned by pain when in bed, when all his bones are hurting;
20 He may be in such pain that he even hates food, even the very best meal.
20
so that he detests bread as well as richer food.
21 His body becomes so thin there is almost nothing left of it, and his bones that were hidden now stick out.
21
His flesh wastes away, till one can't stand to look; his bones protrude and become unsightly.
22 He is near death, and his life is almost over.
22
His soul comes close to the pit and his life to those who bring death.
23 "But there may be an angel to speak for him, one out of a thousand, who will tell him what to do.
23
"If there is for him an angel, a mediator, one among a thousand, who can vouch for the man's uprightness;
24 The angel will beg for mercy and say: 'Save him from death. I have found a way to pay for his life.'
24
then [God] is gracious to him and says, 'Redeem him from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom.'
25 Then his body is made new like a child's. It will return to the way it was when he was young.
25
His flesh becomes fresher than that of a child, he returns to the days of his youth.
26 That person will pray to God, and God will listen to him. with happiness. And God will set things right for him again.
26
He prays to God and is accepted by him, so that he sees [God's] face with joy, and [God] repays the man for his righteousness.
27 Then he will say to others, 'I sinned and twisted what was right, but I did not receive the punishment I should have received.
27
He declares before everyone, 'I sinned; I perverted what was right, and it gained me nothing.
28 God bought my life back from death, and I will continue to enjoy life.'
28
[God] redeemed me from going into the pit, and now my life sees light.'
29 "God does all these things to a person two or even three times
29
God will accomplish all these things twice, even three times, with a man,
30 so he won't die as punishment for his sins and so he may still enjoy life.
30
to bring him back from the pit, so that he can enjoy the light of the living.
31 "Job, pay attention and listen to me; be quiet, and I will speak.
31
"Pay attention, Iyov, listen to me; keep quiet, and I will keep speaking.
32 If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, because I want to prove you right.
32
If you have something to say, answer me; speak, because I want to show that you are right.
33 But if you have nothing to say, then listen to me; be quiet, and I will teach you wisdom."
33
If not, then listen to me; keep quiet, and I will teach you wisdom."
