1 And Elihu addeth and saith: --
1 Then Elihu continued, saying:
2 Honour me a little, and I shew thee, That yet for God [are] words.
2 Be patient with me a little longer, and I will inform you, for there is still more to be said on God's behalf.
3 I lift up my knowledge from afar, And to my Maker I ascribe righteousness.
3 I will get my knowledge from afar and ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
4 For, truly, my words [are] not false, The perfect in knowledge [is] with thee.
4 For my arguments are without flaw; one who has perfect knowledge is with you.
5 Lo, God [is] mighty, and despiseth not, Mighty [in] power [and] heart.
5 Yes, God is mighty, but He despises [no one]; He understands all things.
6 He reviveth not the wicked, And the judgment of the poor appointeth;
6 He does not keep the wicked alive, but He gives justice to the afflicted.
7 He withdraweth not from the righteous His eyes, And [from] kings on the throne, And causeth them to sit for ever, and they are high,
7 He does not remove His gaze from the righteous, but He seats them forever with enthroned kings, and they are exalted.
8 And if prisoners in fetters They are captured with cords of affliction,
8 If people are bound with chains and trapped by the cords of affliction,
9 Then He declareth to them their work, And their transgressions, Because they have become mighty,
9 God tells them what they have done and how arrogantly they have transgressed.
10 And He uncovereth their ear for instruction, And saith that they turn back from iniquity.
10 He opens their ears to correction and insists they repent from iniquity.
11 If they do hear and serve, They complete their days in good, And their years in pleasantness.
11 If they serve Him obediently, they will end their days in prosperity and their years in happiness.
12 And if they do not hearken, By the dart they pass away, And expire without knowledge.
12 But if they do not obey, they will cross the river [of death] and die without knowledge.
13 And the profane in heart set the face, They cry not when He hath bound them.
13 Those who have a godless heart harbor anger; even when God binds them, they do not cry for help.
14 Their soul dieth in youth, And their life among the defiled.
14 They die in their youth; their life [ends] among male cult prostitutes.
15 He draweth out the afflicted in his affliction, And uncovereth in oppression their ear.
15 God rescues the afflicted by afflicting them; He instructs them by means of their torment.
16 And also He moved thee from a strait place, [To] a broad place -- no straitness under it, And the sitting beyond of thy table Hath been full of fatness.
16 Indeed, He lured you from the jaws of distress to a spacious and unconfined place. Your table was spread with choice food.
17 And the judgment of the wicked thou hast fulfilled, Judgment and justice are upheld -- because of fury,
17 Yet [now] you are obsessed with the judgment due the wicked; judgment and justice have seized you.
18 Lest He move thee with a stroke, And the abundance of an atonement turn thee not aside.
18 Be careful that no one lures you with riches; do not let a large ransom lead you astray.
19 Doth He value thy riches? He hath gold, and all the forces of power.
19 Can your wealth or all [your] physical exertion keep [you] from distress?
20 Desire not the night, For the going up of peoples in their stead.
20 Do not long for the night when nations will disappear from their places.
21 Take heed -- do not turn unto iniquity, For on this thou hast fixed Rather than [on] affliction.
21 Be careful that you do not turn to iniquity, for that is why you have been tested by affliction.
22 Lo, God doth sit on high by His power, Who [is] like Him -- a teacher?
22 Look, God shows Himself exalted by His power. Who is a teacher like Him?
23 Who hath appointed unto Him his way? And who said, `Thou hast done iniquity?'
23 Who has appointed His way for Him, and who has declared, "You have done wrong"?
24 Remember that thou magnify His work That men have beheld.
24 Remember that you should praise His work, which people have sung about.
25 All men have looked on it, Man looketh attentively from afar.
25 All mankind has seen it; people have looked at it from a distance.
26 Lo, God [is] high, And we know not the number of His years, Yea, there [is] no searching.
26 Look, God is exalted beyond our knowledge; the number of His years cannot be counted.
27 When He doth diminish droppings of the waters, They refine rain according to its vapour,
27 For He makes waterdrops evaporate; they distill the rain into its mist,
28 Which clouds do drop, They distil on man abundantly.
28 which the clouds pour out and shower abundantly on mankind.
29 Yea, doth [any] understand The spreadings out of a cloud? The noises of His tabernacle?
29 Can anyone understand how the clouds spread out or how the thunder roars from God's pavilion?
30 Lo, He hath spread over it His light, And the roots of the sea He hath covered,
30 Look, He spreads His lightning around Him and covers the depths of the sea.
31 For by them He doth judge peoples, He giveth food in abundance.
31 For He judges the nations with these; He gives food in abundance.
32 By two palms He hath covered the light, And layeth a charge over it in meeting,
32 He covers [His] hands with lightning and commands it to hit its mark.
33 He sheweth by it [to] his friend substance, Anger against perversity.
33 The thunder declares His presence; the cattle also, the approaching [storm].
