1 Tǎnxī rén Yǐlìfǎ huídá shuō ,

Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2 Rén ruò xiǎng yǔ nǐ shuōhuà , nǐ jiù yànfán ma . dàn shuí néng rĕn zhù bù shuō ne .

“If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking?
3 Nǐ sùlái jiàodǎo xǔduō de rén , yòu jiāngù ruǎnfuò de shǒu .

Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands.
4 Nǐde yányǔ céng fúzhù nà jiāngyào diēdǎo de rén . nǐ yòu shǐ ruǎnfuò de xī wĕngù .

Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees.
5 Dàn xiànzaì huòhuàn líndào nǐ , nǐ jiù hūn mí , āijìn nǐ , nǐ biàn jīng huáng .

But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed.
6 Nǐde yǐkào bú shì zaì nǐ jìngwèi shén ma . nǐde pànwàng bú shì zaì nǐ xíngshì chún zhēng ma .

Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope?
7 Qǐng nǐ zhuī xiǎng , wúgū de rén yǒu shuí mièwáng . zhèngzhí de rén zaì héchu jiǎnchú .

“Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed?
8 Àn wǒ suǒ jiàn , gēng zuìniè , zhǒng dú haì de rén , dōu zhàoyàng shōugē .

As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it.
9 Shén yī chū qì , tāmen jiù mièwáng . shén yī fānù , tāmen jiù xiāo mò .

At the breath of God they perish; at the blast of his anger they are no more.
10 Shīzi de hǒu jiào , hé mĕng shī de shēngyīn , jǐn dōu zhǐxī . shǎo zhuàng shīzi de yá chǐ , yĕ dōu qiāo diào .

The lions may roar and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions are broken.
11 Lǎo shīzi yīn jué shí ér sǐ . mǔ shī zhī zǐ yĕ dōu lí sǎn .

The lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12 Wǒ ànàn dì dé le mò shì . wǒ ĕrduo yĕ tīng qí xì wēi de shēngyīn .

“A word was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a whisper of it.
13 Zaì sīniàn yè zhōng , yìxiàng zhī jiān , shìrén chén shuì de shíhou .

Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on people,
14 Kǒngjù , zhàn jīng líndào wǒ shēn , shǐ wǒ bǎi gú dá zhàn .

fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake.
15 Yǒu líng cóng wǒ miànqián jīngguò , wǒ shēnshang de haó maó zhí lì .

A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end.
16 Nà líng tíng zhù , wǒ què bùnéng biàn qí xíngzhuàng . yǒu yǐng xiàng zaì wǒ yǎnqián . wǒ zaì jìngmò zhōng tīngjian yǒu shēngyīn shuō ,

It stopped, but I could not tell what it was. A form stood before my eyes, and I heard a hushed voice:
17 Bì sǐ de rén qǐnéng bǐ shén gōngyì ma . rén qǐnéng bǐ zào tāde zhǔ jiéjìng ma .

‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?
18 Zhǔ bù xìn kào tāde chénpú , bìngqiĕ zhǐ tāde shǐzhĕ wèi yúmeì .

If God places no trust in his servants, if he charges his angels with error,
19 Hékuàng nà zhù zaì tǔ fáng , gēnjī zaì chéntǔ lǐ , beì dù chóng suǒ huǐhuaì de rén ne .

how much more those who live in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who are crushed more readily than a moth!
20 Zǎo wǎn zhī jiān , jiù beì huǐmiè , yǒng guī wú yǒu , wú rén lǐ huì .

Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces; unnoticed, they perish forever.
21 Tā zhàngpéng de shéng suǒ qǐbù cóng zhōng chōu chūlai ne . tā sǐ , qiĕ shì wú zhìhuì ér sǐ .

Are not the cords of their tent pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?’
