Job 5

RHE

MSG

1 Call now, if there be any that will answer thee, and turn to some of the saints.
1 "Call for help, Job, if you think anyone will answer! To which of the holy angels will you turn?
2 Anger indeed killeth the foolish, and envy slayeth the little one.
2 The hot temper of a fool eventually kills him, the jealous anger of a simpleton does her in.
3 I have seen a fool with a strong root, and I cursed his beauty immediately.
3 I've seen it myself - seen fools putting down roots, and then, suddenly, their houses are cursed.
4 His children shall be far from safety, and shall be destroyed in the gate, and there shall be none to deliver them.
4 Their children out in the cold, abused and exploited, with no one to stick up for them.
5 Whose harvest the hungry shall eat, and the armed man shall take him by violence, and the thirsty shall drink up his riches.
5 Hungry people off the street plunder their harvests, cleaning them out completely, taking thorns and all, insatiable for everything they have.
6 Nothing upon earth is done without a cause, and sorrow doth not spring out of the ground.
6 Don't blame fate when things go wrong - trouble doesn't come from nowhere.
7 Man is born to labour, and the bird to fly.
7 It's human! Mortals are born and bred for trouble, as certainly as sparks fly upward. What a Blessing When God Corrects You!
8 Wherefore I will pray to the Lord, and address my speech to God:
8 "If I were in your shoes, I'd go straight to God, I'd throw myself on the mercy of God.
9 Who doth great things, and unsearchable and wonderful things without number:
9 After all, he's famous for great and unexpected acts; there's no end to his surprises.
10 Who giveth rain upon the face of the earth, and watereth all things with waters:
10 He gives rain, for instance, across the wide earth, sends water to irrigate the fields.
11 Who setteth up the humble on high, and comforteth with health those that mourn.
11 He raises up the down-and-out, gives firm footing to those sinking in grief.
12 Who bringeth to nought the designs of the malignant, so that their hands cannot accomplish what they had begun:
12 He aborts the schemes of conniving crooks, so that none of their plots come to term.
13 Who catcheth the wise in their craftiness, and disappointeth the counsel of the wicked:
13 He catches the know-it-alls in their conspiracies - all that intricate intrigue swept out with the trash!
14 They shall meet with darkness in the day, and grope at noonday as in the night.
14 Suddenly they're disoriented, plunged into darkness; they can't see to put one foot in front of the other.
15 But he shall save the needy from the sword of their mouth, and the poor from the hand of the violent.
15 But the downtrodden are saved by God, saved from the murderous plots, saved from the iron fist.
16 And to the needy there shall be hope, but iniquity shall draw in her mouth.
16 And so the poor continue to hope, while injustice is bound and gagged.
17 Blessed is the man whom God correcteth: refuse not, therefore, the chastising of the Lord.
17 "So, what a blessing when God steps in and corrects you! Mind you, don't despise the discipline of Almighty God!
18 For he woundeth, and cureth: he striketh, and his hands shall heal.
18 True, he wounds, but he also dresses the wound; the same hand that hurts you, heals you.
19 In six troubles he shall deliver thee, and in the seventh, evil shall not touch thee.
19 From one disaster after another he delivers you; no matter what the calamity, the evil can't touch you -
20 In famine he shall deliver thee from death; and in battle, from the hand of the sword.
20 "In famine, he'll keep you from starving, in war, from being gutted by the sword.
21 Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue: and thou shalt not fear calamity when it cometh.
21 You'll be protected from vicious gossip and live fearless through any catastrophe.
22 In destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: and thou shalt not be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
22 You'll shrug off disaster and famine, and stroll fearlessly among wild animals.
23 But thou shalt have a covenant with the stones of the lands, and the beasts of the earth shall be at peace with thee.
23 You'll be on good terms with rocks and mountains; wild animals will become your good friends.
24 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle is in peace, and visiting thy beauty, thou shalt not sin.
24 You'll know that your place on earth is safe, you'll look over your goods and find nothing amiss.
25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be multiplied, and thy offspring like the grass of the earth.
25 You'll see your children grow up, your family lovely and lissome as orchard grass.
26 Thou shalt enter into the grave in abundance, as a heap of wheat is brought in in its season.
26 You'll arrive at your grave ripe with many good years, like sheaves of golden grain at harvest.
27 Behold, this is even so, as we have searched out: which thou having heard, consider it thoroughly in thy mind.
27 "Yes, this is the way things are - my word of honor! Take it to heart and you won't go wrong." Job Replies to Eliphaz
