1 The Pharisees heard that Jesus was winning and baptizing more disciples than John.
1 ut ergo cognovit Iesus quia audierunt Pharisaei quia Iesus plures discipulos facit et baptizat quam Iohannes
2 But in fact Jesus was not baptizing. His disciples were.
2 quamquam Iesus non baptizaret sed discipuli eius
3 When the Lord found out about all this, he left Judea. He went back to Galilee again.
3 reliquit Iudaeam et abiit iterum in Galilaeam
4 Jesus had to go through Samaria.
4 oportebat autem eum transire per Samariam
5 He came to a town in Samaria called Sychar. It was near the piece of land Jacob had given his son Joseph.
5 venit ergo in civitatem Samariae quae dicitur Sychar iuxta praedium quod dedit Iacob Ioseph filio suo
6 Jacob's well was there. Jesus was tired from the journey. So he sat down by the well. It was about noon.
6 erat autem ibi fons Iacob Iesus ergo fatigatus ex itinere sedebat sic super fontem hora erat quasi sexta
7 A woman from Samaria came to get some water. Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"
7 venit mulier de Samaria haurire aquam dicit ei Iesus da mihi bibere
8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
8 discipuli enim eius abierant in civitatem ut cibos emerent
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew. I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" She said this because Jews don't have anything to do with Samaritans.
9 dicit ergo ei mulier illa samaritana quomodo tu Iudaeus cum sis bibere a me poscis quae sum mulier samaritana non enim coutuntur Iudaei Samaritanis
10 Jesus answered her, "You do not know what God's gift is. And you do not know who is asking you for a drink. If you did, you would have asked him. He would have given you living water."
10 respondit Iesus et dixit ei si scires donum Dei et quis est qui dicit tibi da mihi bibere tu forsitan petisses ab eo et dedisset tibi aquam vivam
11 "Sir," the woman said, "you don't have anything to get water with. The well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
11 dicit ei mulier Domine neque in quo haurias habes et puteus altus est unde ergo habes aquam vivam
12 "Our father Jacob gave us the well. He drank from it himself. So did his sons and his flocks and herds. Are you more important than he is?"
12 numquid tu maior es patre nostro Iacob qui dedit nobis puteum et ipse ex eo bibit et filii eius et pecora eius
13 Jesus answered, "All who drink this water will be thirsty again.
13 respondit Iesus et dixit ei omnis qui bibit ex aqua hac sitiet iterum qui autem biberit ex aqua quam ego dabo ei non sitiet in aeternum
14 But anyone who drinks the water I give him will never be thirsty. In fact, the water I give him will become a spring of water in him. It will flow up into eternal life."
14 sed aqua quam dabo ei fiet in eo fons aquae salientis in vitam aeternam
15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water. Then I will never be thirsty. And I won't have to keep coming here to get water."
15 dicit ad eum mulier Domine da mihi hanc aquam ut non sitiam neque veniam huc haurire
16 He told her, "Go. Get your husband and come back."
16 dicit ei Iesus vade voca virum tuum et veni huc
17 "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband.
17 respondit mulier et dixit non habeo virum dicit ei Iesus bene dixisti quia non habeo virum
18 The fact is, you have had five husbands. And the man you have now is not your husband. What you have just said is very true."
18 quinque enim viros habuisti et nunc quem habes non est tuus vir hoc vere dixisti
19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.
19 dicit ei mulier Domine video quia propheta es tu
20 Our people have worshiped on this mountain for a long time. But you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
20 patres nostri in monte hoc adoraverunt et vos dicitis quia Hierosolymis est locus ubi adorare oportet
21 Jesus said, "Believe me, woman. A time is coming when you will not worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.
21 dicit ei Iesus mulier crede mihi quia veniet hora quando neque in monte hoc neque in Hierosolymis adorabitis Patrem
22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know. Salvation comes from the Jews.
22 vos adoratis quod nescitis nos adoramus quod scimus quia salus ex Iudaeis est
23 "But a new time is coming. In fact, it is already here. True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. They are the kind of worshipers the Father is looking for.
23 sed venit hora et nunc est quando veri adoratores adorabunt Patrem in spiritu et veritate nam et Pater tales quaerit qui adorent eum
24 "God is spirit. His worshipers must worship him in spirit and in truth."
24 spiritus est Deus et eos qui adorant eum in spiritu et veritate oportet adorare
25 The woman said, "I know that Messiah is coming." (He is called Christ.) "When he comes, he will explain everything to us."
25 dicit ei mulier scio quia Messias venit qui dicitur Christus cum ergo venerit ille nobis adnuntiabit omnia
26 Then Jesus said, "I, the one speaking to you, am he."
26 dicit ei Iesus ego sum qui loquor tecum
27 Just then Jesus' disciples returned. They were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want from her?" No one asked, "Why are you talking with her?"
27 et continuo venerunt discipuli eius et mirabantur quia cum muliere loquebatur nemo tamen dixit quid quaeris aut quid loqueris cum ea
28 The woman left her water jar and went back to the town. She said to the people,
28 reliquit ergo hydriam suam mulier et abiit in civitatem et dicit illis hominibus
29 "Come. See a man who told me everything I've ever done. Could this be the Christ?"
29 venite videte hominem qui dixit mihi omnia quaecumque feci numquid ipse est Christus
30 The people came out of the town and made their way toward Jesus.
30 exierunt de civitate et veniebant ad eum
31 His disciples were saying to him, "Rabbi, eat something!"
31 interea rogabant eum discipuli dicentes rabbi manduca
32 But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."
32 ille autem dixit eis ego cibum habeo manducare quem vos nescitis
33 Then his disciples asked each other, "Did someone bring him food?"
33 dicebant ergo discipuli ad invicem numquid aliquis adtulit ei manducare
34 Jesus said, "My food is to do what my Father sent me to do. My food is to finish his work.
34 dicit eis Iesus meus cibus est ut faciam voluntatem eius qui misit me ut perficiam opus eius
35 "You say, 'Four months more, and then it will be harvest time.' But I tell you, open your eyes! Look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest right now.
35 nonne vos dicitis quod adhuc quattuor menses sunt et messis venit ecce dico vobis levate oculos vestros et videte regiones quia albae sunt iam ad messem
36 Those who gather the crop are already getting paid. They are already harvesting the crop for eternal life. So those who plant and those who gather can now be glad together.
36 et qui metit mercedem accipit et congregat fructum in vitam aeternam ut et qui seminat simul gaudeat et qui metit
37 "Here is a true saying. 'One plants and another gathers.'
37 in hoc enim est verbum verum quia alius est qui seminat et alius est qui metit
38 I sent you to gather what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work. You have gathered the benefits of their work."
38 ego misi vos metere quod vos non laborastis alii laboraverunt et vos in laborem eorum introistis
39 Many of the Samaritans from the town of Sychar believed in Jesus. They believed because of the woman's witness. She said, "He told me everything I've ever done."
39 ex civitate autem illa multi crediderunt in eum Samaritanorum propter verbum mulieris testimonium perhibentis quia dixit mihi omnia quaecumque feci
40 Then the Samaritans came to him and tried to get him to stay with them. So he stayed two days.
40 cum venissent ergo ad illum Samaritani rogaverunt eum ut ibi maneret et mansit ibi duos dies
41 Because of his words, many more people became believers.
41 et multo plures crediderunt propter sermonem eius
42 They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said. We have now heard for ourselves. We know that this man really is the Savior of the world."
42 et mulieri dicebant quia iam non propter tuam loquellam credimus ipsi enim audivimus et scimus quia hic est vere salvator mundi
43 After the two days, Jesus left for Galilee.
43 post duos autem dies exiit inde et abiit in Galilaeam
44 He himself had pointed out that a prophet is not respected in his own country.
44 ipse enim Iesus testimonium perhibuit quia propheta in sua patria honorem non habet
45 When he arrived in Galilee, the people living there welcomed him. They had seen everything he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast. That was because they had also been there.
45 cum ergo venisset in Galilaeam exceperunt eum Galilaei cum omnia vidissent quae fecerat Hierosolymis in die festo et ipsi enim venerant in diem festum
46 Once more, Jesus visited Cana in Galilee. Cana is where he had turned the water into wine. A royal official was there. His son was sick in bed at Capernaum.
46 venit ergo iterum in Cana Galilaeae ubi fecit aquam vinum et erat quidam regulus cuius filius infirmabatur Capharnaum
47 The official heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea. So he went to Jesus and begged him to come and heal his son. The boy was close to death.
47 hic cum audisset quia Iesus adveniret a Iudaea in Galilaeam abiit ad eum et rogabat eum ut descenderet et sanaret filium eius incipiebat enim mori
48 Jesus told him, "You people will never believe unless you see miraculous signs and wonders."
48 dixit ergo Iesus ad eum nisi signa et prodigia videritis non creditis
49 The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies."
49 dicit ad eum regulus Domine descende priusquam moriatur filius meus
50 Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man believed what Jesus said, and so he left.
50 dicit ei Iesus vade filius tuus vivit credidit homo sermoni quem dixit ei Iesus et ibat
51 While he was still on his way home, his servants met him. They gave him the news that his boy was living.
51 iam autem eo descendente servi occurrerunt ei et nuntiaverunt dicentes quia filius eius viveret
52 He asked what time his son got better. They said to him, "The fever left him yesterday afternoon at one o'clock."
52 interrogabat ergo horam ab eis in qua melius habuerit et dixerunt ei quia heri hora septima reliquit eum febris
53 Then the father realized what had happened. That was the exact time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his family became believers.
53 cognovit ergo pater quia illa hora erat in qua dixit ei Iesus filius tuus vivit et credidit ipse et domus eius tota
54 This was the second miraculous sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.
54 hoc iterum secundum signum fecit Iesus cum venisset a Iudaea in Galilaeam
