New King James Version NKJV
1 The leaders of the Levite family groups approached the priest Eleazar and Joshua, the son of Nun. They also approached the leaders of the family groups of Israel's other tribes.
1 Then the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites came near to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Israel.
2 They went to all of them at Shiloh in Canaan. They said to them, "Give us towns to live in. Also give us grasslands for our livestock. That's what the LORD commanded through Moses."
2 And they spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, "The Lord commanded through Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with their common-lands for our livestock."
3 So the people of Israel gave the Levites towns and grasslands out of their own shares of land. They did what the LORD had commanded. Here are the towns the Levites were given.
3 So the children of Israel gave to the Levites from their inheritance, at the commandment of the Lord, these cities and their common-lands:
4 The first lot that was drawn out was for the people of Kohath, family group by family group. Some of the Levites came from the family line of the priest Aaron. They were given 13 towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.
4 Now the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites. And the children of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, had thirteen cities by lot from the tribe of Judah, from the tribe of Simeon, and from the tribe of Benjamin.
5 The rest of Kohath's family groups were given ten towns from the family groups of the tribes of Ephraim and Dan and half of the tribe of Manasseh.
5 The rest of the children of Kohath had ten cities by lot from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh.
6 The family groups of Gershon were given 13 towns from the family groups of the tribes of Issachar, Asher and Naphtali and half of the tribe of Manasseh. That part of Manasseh was in the land of Bashan.
6 And the children of Gershon had thirteen cities by lot from the families of the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
7 The family groups of Merari received 12 towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun. Each family group received its share.
7 The children of Merari according to their families had twelve cities from the tribe of Reuben, from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun.
8 So the people of Israel gave those towns and their grasslands to the Levites. They did what the LORD had commanded through Moses.
8 And the children of Israel gave these cities with their common-lands by lot to the Levites, as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses.
9 They gave some towns from the territories of the tribes of Judah and Simeon
9 So they gave from the tribe of the children of Judah and from the tribe of the children of Simeon these cities which are designated by name,
10 to the members of the family line of Aaron. The towns were given to the family groups of Kohath. They were Levites. The first lot that was drawn out was for them. Here are the towns the family groups of Kohath were given.
10 which were for the children of Aaron, one of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi; for the lot was theirs first.
11 The people of Israel gave them Kiriath Arba and the grasslands that were around it. Kiriath Arba is also called Hebron. It's in the hill country of Judah. Anak came from the family line of Arba.
11 And they gave them Kirjath Arba (Arba was the father of Anak), which is Hebron, in the mountains of Judah, with the common-land surrounding it.
12 But Israel had already given away the fields and villages around the city. They had given them to Caleb as his share. Caleb was the son of Jephunneh.
12 But the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his possession.
13 So they gave Hebron to the members of the family line of the priest Aaron. Hebron was a city where anyone who was charged with murder could go for safety. They also gave them Libnah,
13 Thus to the children of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Libnah with its common-land,
14 Jattir, Eshtemoa,
14 Jattir with its common-land, Eshtemoa with its common-land,
15 Holon, Debir,
15 Holon with its common-land, Debir with its common-land,
16 Ain, Juttah and Beth Shemesh. They gave those towns and their grasslands to the family groups of Kohath. The total number of towns from the tribes of Judah and Simeon was nine.
16 Ain with its common-land, Juttah with its common-land, and Beth Shemesh with its common-land: nine cities from those two tribes;
17 The people of Israel gave some towns from the tribe of Benjamin to the family groups of Kohath. The towns were Gibeon, Geba,
17 and from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its common-land, Geba with its common-land,
18 Anathoth and Almon. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was four.
18 Anathoth with its common-land, and Almon with its common-land: four cities.
19 So the total number of towns and their grasslands that were given to the priests in the family line of Aaron was 13.
19 All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their common-lands.
20 There were other family groups of Kohath among the Levites. They were given towns from the tribe of Ephraim. Here are the towns those other family groups of Kohath were given.
20 And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites, the rest of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot from the tribe of Ephraim.
21 In the hill country of Ephraim they were given Shechem. It was a city where anyone who was charged with murder could go for safety. They were also given Gezer,
21 For they gave them Shechem with its common-land in the mountains of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the slayer), Gezer with its common-land,
22 Kibzaim and Beth Horon. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was four.
22 Kibzaim with its common-land, and Beth Horon with its common-land: four cities;
23 From the tribe of Dan they received Eltekeh, Gibbethon,
23 and from the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with its common-land, Gibbethon with its common-land,
24 Aijalon and Gath Rimmon. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was four.
24 Aijalon with its common-land, and Gath Rimmon with its common-land: four cities;
25 From half of the tribe of Manasseh they received Taanach and Gath Rimmon. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was two.
25 and from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with its common-land and Gath Rimmon with its common-land: two cities.
26 So all of those ten towns and their grasslands were given to the other family groups of Kohath.
26 All the ten cities with their common-lands were for the rest of the families of the children of Kohath.
27 Here are the towns the family groups of Gershon among the Levites were given. From half of the tribe of Manasseh they received Golan in the land of Bashan. Golan was a city where anyone who was charged with murder could go for safety. They also received Be Eshtarah. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was two.
27 Also to the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, from the other half-tribe of Manasseh, they gave Golan in Bashan with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), and Be Eshterah with its common-land: two cities;
28 From the tribe of Issachar they received Kishion, Daberath,
28 and from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion with its common-land, Daberath with its common-land,
29 Jarmuth and En Gannim. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was four.
29 Jarmuth with its common-land, and En Gannim with its common-land: four cities;
30 From the tribe of Asher they received Mishal, Abdon,
30 and from the tribe of Asher, Mishal with its common-land, Abdon with its common-land,
31 Helkath and Rehob. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was four.
31 Helkath with its common-land, and Rehob with its common-land: four cities;
32 From the tribe of Naphtali they received Kedesh in Galilee. Kedesh was a city where anyone who was charged with murder could go for safety. They also received Hammoth Dor and Kartan. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was three.
32 and from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Hammoth Dor with its common-land, and Kartan with its common-land: three cities.
33 So the total number of towns and their grasslands that were given to the family groups of Gershon was 13.
33 All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their common-lands.
34 The rest of the Levites were from the family groups of Merari. Here are the towns they were given. From the tribe of Zebulun they received Jokneam, Kartah,
34 And to the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its common-land, Kartah with its common-land,
35 Dimnah and Nahalal. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was four.
35 Dimnah with its common-land, and Nahalal with its common-land: four cities;
36 From the tribe of Reuben they received Bezer, Jahaz,
36 and from the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with its common-land, Jahaz with its common-land,
37 Kedemoth and Mephaath. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was four.
37 Kedemoth with its common-land, and Mephaath with its common-land: four cities;
38 From the tribe of Gad they received Ramoth in Gilead. Ramoth was a city where anyone who was charged with murder could go for safety. They also received Mahanaim,
38 and from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Mahanaim with its common-land,
39 Heshbon and Jazer. The total number of those towns and their grasslands was four.
39 Heshbon with its common-land, and Jazer with its common-land: four cities in all.
40 So the total number of towns that were given to the family groups of Merari was 12. That concludes the list of towns the rest of the Levites received.
40 So all the cities for the children of Merari according to their families, the rest of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve cities.
41 The total number of Levite towns and their grasslands in the territory that was given to Israel was 48.
41 All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight cities with their common-lands.
42 Each of those towns had grasslands around it. That was true of all of them.
42 Every one of these cities had its common-land surrounding it; thus were all these cities.
43 So the LORD gave Israel all of the land he had promised with an oath to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And Israel took it over. Then they settled down there.
43 So the Lord gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it.
44 The LORD gave them peace and rest on every side. That's what he had promised their fathers he would do. Not one of their enemies was able to fight against Israel and win. The LORD handed all of their enemies over to them.
44 The Lord gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand.
45 The LORD kept all of the good promises he had made to the people of Israel. Every one of them came true.
45 Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.
