Joshua 3

GNTA 1 The next morning Joshua and all the people of Israel got up early, left the camp at Acacia, and went to the Jordan, where they camped while waiting to cross it. NIV 1 Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. GNTA 2 Three days later the leaders went through the camp NIV 2 After three days the officers went throughout the camp, GNTA 3 and told the people, "When you see the priests carrying the Covenant Box of the Lord your God, break camp and follow them. NIV 3 giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. GNTA 4 You have never been here before, so they will show you the way to go. But do not get near the Covenant Box; stay about half a mile behind it." NIV 4 Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between you and the ark; do not go near it.” GNTA 5 Joshua told the people, "Purify yourselves, because tomorrow the Lord will perform miracles among you." NIV 5 Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you.” GNTA 6 Then he told the priests to take the Covenant Box and go with it ahead of the people. They did as he said. NIV 6 Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.” So they took it up and went ahead of them. GNTA 7 The Lord said to Joshua, "What I do today will make all the people of Israel begin to honor you as a great man, and they will realize that I am with you as I was with Moses. NIV 7 And the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. GNTA 8 Tell the priests carrying the Covenant Box that when they reach the river, they must wade in and stand near the bank." NIV 8 Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.’ ” GNTA 9 Then Joshua said to the people, "Come here and listen to what the Lord your God has to say. NIV 9 Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God. GNTA 10 As you advance, he will surely drive out the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. You will know that the living God is among you NIV 10 This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites. GNTA 11 when the Covenant Box of the Lord of all the earth crosses the Jordan ahead of you. NIV 11 See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you. GNTA 12 Now choose twelve men, one from each of the tribes of Israel. NIV 12 Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. GNTA 13 When the priests who carry the Covenant Box of the Lord of all the earth put their feet in the water, the Jordan will stop flowing, and the water coming downstream will pile up in one place." NIV 13 And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the LORD—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.” GNTA 14 It was harvest time, and the river was in flood. When the people left the camp to cross the Jordan, the priests went ahead of them, carrying the Covenant Box. As soon as the priests stepped into the river, NIV 14 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them. GNTA 16 the water stopped flowing and piled up, far upstream at Adam, the city beside Zarethan. The flow downstream to the Dead Sea was completely cut off, and the people were able to cross over near Jericho. NIV 16 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. GNTA 17 While the people walked across on dry ground, the priests carrying the Lord's Covenant Box stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan until all the people had crossed over. NIV 17 The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.
