Joshua 7

HNV 1 But the children of Yisra'el committed a trespass in the devoted thing; for `Akhan, the son of Karmi, the son of Zavdi, the son of Zerach, of the tribe of Yehudah, took of the devoted thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Yisra'el. NIV 1 But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things ; Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the LORD’s anger burned against Israel. HNV 2 Yehoshua sent men from Yericho to `Ai, which is beside Beit-Aven, on the east side of Beit-El, and spoke to them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. The men went up and spied out `Ai. NIV 2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven to the east of Bethel, and told them, “Go up and spy out the region.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. HNV 3 They returned to Yehoshua, and said to him, Don't let all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike `Ai; don't make all the people to toil there; for they are but few. NIV 3 When they returned to Joshua, they said, “Not all the army will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary the whole army, for only a few people live there.” HNV 4 So there went up there of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of `Ai. NIV 4 So about three thousand went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai, HNV 5 The men of `Ai struck of them about thirty-six men; and they chased them [from] before the gate even to Shevarim, and struck them at the descent; and the hearts of the people melted, and became as water. NIV 5 who killed about thirty-six of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted in fear and became like water. HNV 6 Yehoshua tore his clothes, and fell to the dirt on his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the Zakenim of Yisra'el; and they put dust on their heads. NIV 6 Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the LORD, remaining there till evening. The elders of Israel did the same, and sprinkled dust on their heads. HNV 7 Yehoshua said, Alas, Lord GOD, why have you at all brought this people over the Yarden, to deliver us into the hand of the Amori, to cause us to perish? would that we had been content and lived beyond the Yarden! NIV 7 And Joshua said, “Alas, Sovereign LORD, why did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! HNV 8 Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Yisra'el has turned their backs before their enemies! NIV 8 Pardon your servant, Lord. What can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? HNV 9 For the Kana`anim and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will compass us round, and cut off our name from the eretz: and what will you do for your great name? NIV 9 The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?” HNV 10 The LORD said to Yehoshua, Get you up; why are you thus fallen on your face? NIV 10 The LORD said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? HNV 11 Yisra'el has sinned; yes, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: yes, they have even taken of the devoted thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also; and they have even put it among their own stuff. NIV 11 Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. HNV 12 Therefore the children of Yisra'el can't stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they are become accursed: I will not be with you any more, except you destroy the devoted thing from among you. NIV 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction. HNV 13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus says the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, There is a devoted thing in the midst of you, Yisra'el; you can not stand before your enemies, until you take away the devoted thing from among you. NIV 13 “Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them. HNV 14 In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD takes shall come near by families; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come near by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come near man by man. NIV 14 “ ‘In the morning, present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the LORD chooses shall come forward clan by clan; the clan the LORD chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family the LORD chooses shall come forward man by man. HNV 15 It shall be, that he who is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he has; because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he has done folly in Yisra'el. NIV 15 Whoever is caught with the devoted things shall be destroyed by fire, along with all that belongs to him. He has violated the covenant of the LORD and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!’ ” HNV 16 So Yehoshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Yisra'el near by their tribes; and the tribe of Yehudah was taken: NIV 16 Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and Judah was chosen. HNV 17 and he brought near the family of Yehudah; and he took the family of the Zarchi: and he brought near the family of the Zarchi man by man; and Zavdi was taken: NIV 17 The clans of Judah came forward, and the Zerahites were chosen. He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward by families, and Zimri was chosen. HNV 18 and he brought near his household man by man; and `Akhan, the son of Karmi, the son of Zavdi, the son of Zerach, of the tribe of Yehudah, was taken. NIV 18 Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was chosen. HNV 19 Yehoshua said to `Akhan, My son, please give glory to the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, and make confession to him; and tell me now what you have done; don't hide it from me. NIV 19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and honor him. Tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.” HNV 20 `Akhan answered Yehoshua, and said, Of a truth I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, and thus and thus have I done: NIV 20 Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: HNV 21 when I saw among the spoil a goodly mantle of Shin`ar, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the eretz in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. NIV 21 When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.” HNV 22 So Yehoshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it. NIV 22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath. HNV 23 They took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them to Yehoshua, and to all the children of Yisra'el; and they laid them down before the LORD. NIV 23 They took the things from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites and spread them out before the LORD. HNV 24 Yehoshua, and all Yisra'el with him, took `Akhan the son of Zerach, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his donkeys, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them up to the valley of `Akhor. NIV 24 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor. HNV 25 Yehoshua said, Why have you troubled us? the LORD shall trouble you this day. All Yisra'el stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones. NIV 25 Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble on us? The LORD will bring trouble on you today.” Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them. HNV 26 They raised over him a great heap of stones, to this day; and the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called "The valley of `Akhor" to this day. NIV 26 Over Achan they heaped up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day. Then the LORD turned from his fierce anger. Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since.
