1 Y estas son las naciones que el SEÑOR dejó para probar con ellas a Israel, es decir, a los que no habían experimentado ninguna de las guerras de Canaán

4 Y eran para probar a Israel, para ver si obedecían los mandamientos que el SEÑOR había ordenado a sus padres por medio de Moisés.

5 Y los hijos de Israel habitaron entre los cananeos, los heteos, los amorreos, los ferezeos, los heveos y los jebuseos;

6 tomaron para sí a sus hijas por mujeres, y dieron sus propias hijas a los hijos de ellos, y sirvieron a sus dioses.

7 Y los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, y olvidaron al SEÑOR su Dios, y sirvieron a los baales y a las imágenes de Asera .

8 Entonces se encendió la ira del SEÑOR contra Israel, y los vendió en manos de Cusán-risataim, rey de Mesopotamia ; y los hijos de Israel sirvieron a Cusán-risataim por ocho años.

9 Cuando los hijos de Israel clamaron al SEÑOR, el SEÑOR levantó un libertador a los hijos de Israel para que los librara, a Otoniel, hijo de Cenaz, hermano menor de Caleb.

10 Y vino sobre él el Espíritu del SEÑOR, y juzgó a Israel. Cuando salió a la guerra, el SEÑOR entregó en su mano a Cusán-risataim, rey de Mesopotamia, y su poder prevaleció sobre Cusán-risataim.

11 Y la tierra tuvo descanso por cuarenta años. Y murió Otoniel, hijo de Cenaz.

12 Volvieron los hijos de Israel a hacer lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR. Entonces el SEÑOR fortaleció a Eglón, rey de Moab, contra Israel, porque habían hecho lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR.

13 Y Eglón reunió consigo a los hijos de Amón y de Amalec; y fue y derrotó a Israel, y se apoderaron de la ciudad de las palmeras.

14 Y los hijos de Israel sirvieron a Eglón, rey de Moab, por dieciocho años.

15 Pero los hijos de Israel clamaron al SEÑOR, y el SEÑOR les levantó un libertador, a Aod, hijo de Gera, benjamita, el cual era zurdo. Y los hijos de Israel enviaron tributo con él a Eglón, rey de Moab.

16 Aod se hizo una espada de dos filos, de un codo de largo, y la ató a su muslo derecho debajo de la ropa.

17 Y presentó el tributo a Eglón, rey de Moab; y Eglón era un hombre muy grueso.

18 Y aconteció que cuando terminó de presentar el tributo, despidió a la gente que había traído el tributo.

19 Pero él se volvió desde los ídolos que estaban en Gilgal, y dijo: Tengo un mensaje secreto para ti, oh rey. Y éste dijo: Guarda silencio. Y todos los que le servían salieron.

20 Aod vino a él cuando estaba sentado solo en su sala de verano. Y Aod dijo: Tengo un mensaje de Dios para ti. Y él se levantó de su silla.

21 Aod alargó la mano izquierda, tomó la espada de su muslo derecho, y se la hundió en el vientre.

22 Y la empuñadura entró también tras la hoja, y la gordura se cerró sobre la hoja, pues no sacó la espada de su vientre; y se le salieron los excrementos.

23 Entonces salió Aod al corredor, cerró tras sí las puertas de la sala de la terraza y les pasó el cerrojo.

24 Después de haber salido, vinieron los siervos y miraron, y he aquí, las puertas de la sala de la terraza tenían pasado el cerrojo, y dijeron: Sin duda está haciendo su necesidad en la sala de verano.

25 Y esperaron hasta sentir inquietud, pues he aquí que él no abría las puertas de la sala de la terraza. Entonces tomaron la llave y las abrieron, y he aquí, su señor caído en el suelo, muerto.

26 Mas Aod había escapado mientras ellos esperaban; pasando por los ídolos, había escapado a Seirat.

27 Y cuando llegó, tocó la trompeta en la región montañosa de Efraín; y los hijos de Israel descendieron con él de la región montañosa, estando él al frente de ellos.

28 Y les dijo: Perseguidlos, porque el SEÑOR ha entregado en vuestras manos a vuestros enemigos, los moabitas. Y descendieron tras él y se apoderaron de los vados del Jordán frente a Moab, y no dejaron pasar a nadie.

29 En aquella ocasión mataron a unos diez mil moabitas, todos hombres robustos y valientes; ninguno escapó.

30 Y fue subyugado Moab aquel día bajo la mano de Israel. Y la tierra tuvo descanso por ochenta años.

31 Después de Aod vino Samgar, hijo de Anat, el cual hirió a seiscientos filisteos con una aguijada de bueyes; y él también salvó a Israel.

1 These are the nations that God left there, using them to test the Israelites who had no experience in the Canaanite wars.

2 He did it to train the descendants of Israel, the ones who had no battle experience, in the art of war.

3 He left the five Philistine tyrants, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living on Mount Lebanon from Mount Baal Hermon to Hamath's Pass.

4 They were there to test Israel and see whether they would obey God's commands that were given to their parents through Moses.

5 But the People of Israel made themselves at home among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

6 They married their daughters and gave their own daughters to their sons in marriage. And they worshiped their gods.

7 The People of Israel did evil in God's sight. They forgot their God and worshiped the Baal gods and Asherah goddesses.

8 God's hot anger blazed against Israel. He sold them off to Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim. The People of Israel were in servitude to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.

9 The People of Israel cried out to God and God raised up a savior who rescued them: Caleb's nephew Othniel, son of his younger brother Kenaz.The Spirit of God came on him and he rallied Israel. He went out to war and God gave him Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim. Othniel made short work of him.

11 The land was quiet for forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.

12 But the People of Israel went back to doing evil in God's sight. So God made Eglon king of Moab a power against Israel because they did evil in God's sight.

13 He recruited the Ammonites and Amalekites and went out and struck Israel. They took the City of Palms.

14 The People of Israel were in servitude to Eglon fourteen years.

15 The People of Israel cried out to God and God raised up for them a savior, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjaminite. He was left-handed. The People of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon king of Moab.

16 Ehud made himself a short two-edged sword and strapped it on his right thigh under his clothes.

17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Eglon was grossly fat.

18 After Ehud finished presenting the tribute, he went a little way with the men who had carried it.

19 But when he got as far as the stone images near Gilgal, he went back and said, "I have a private message for you, O king." The king told his servants, "Leave." They all left.

20 Ehud approached him - the king was now quite alone in his cool rooftop room - and said, "I have a word of God for you." Eglon stood up from his throne.

21 Ehud reached with his left hand and took his sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the king's big belly.

22 Not only the blade but the hilt went in. The fat closed in over it so he couldn't pull it out.

23 Ehud slipped out by way of the porch and shut and locked the doors of the rooftop room behind him.

24 Then he was gone. When the servants came, they saw with surprise that the doors to the rooftop room were locked. They said, "He's probably relieving himself in the restroom."

25 They waited. And then they worried - no one was coming out of those locked doors. Finally, they got a key and unlocked them. There was their master, fallen on the floor, dead!

26 While they were standing around wondering what to do, Ehud was long gone. He got past the stone images and escaped to Seirah.

27 When he got there, he sounded the trumpet on Mount Ephraim. The People of Israel came down from the hills and joined him. He took his place at their head.

28 He said, "Follow me, for God has given your enemies - yes, Moab! - to you." They went down after him and secured the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites. They let no one cross over.

29 At that time, they struck down about ten companies of Moabites, all of them well-fed and robust. Not one escaped.

30 That day Moab was subdued under the hand of Israel. The land was quiet for eighty years.

31 Shamgar son of Anath came after Ehud. Using a cattle prod, he killed six hundred Philistines single-handed. He too saved Israel.
