1 IO son l’uomo che ha veduta afflizione, Per la verga dell’indegnazion del Signore.

2 Egli mi ha condotto, e fatto camminar nelle tenebre, E non nella luce.

3 Certo, egli mi ritorna addosso, E rivolge la sua mano contro a me tuttodì.

4 Egli ha fatta invecchiar la mia carne, e la mia pelle; Egli mi ha fiaccate le ossa.

5 Egli ha fatti degli edificii contro a me, E mi ha intorniato di tosco e di affanno.

6 Egli mi ha fatto dimorare in luoghi tenebrosi, A guisa di quelli che son morti già da lungo tempo.

7 Egli mi ha assiepato d’ogn’intorno, sì che non posso uscire; Egli ha aggravati i miei ceppi.

8 Eziandio quando grido e sclamo, Egli chiude il passo alla mia orazione,

9 Egli ha chiuse le mie vie di pietre conce a scarpello, Ha rinvolti i miei sentieri.

10 Egli mi è stato un orso all’agguato, Un leone ne’ suoi nascondimenti.

11 Egli ha traviate le mie vie, Mi ha tagliato a pezzi, mi ha renduto desolato.

12 Egli ha teso l’arco suo, E mi ha posto come un bersaglio incontro alle saette.

13 Egli mi ha fitti nelle reni Gli strali del suo turcasso.

14 Io sono in derisione a tutti i popoli, E son la lor canzone tuttodì.

15 Egli mi ha saziato di amaritudini, Mi ha inebbriato di assenzio.

16 Egli mi ha stritolati i denti con della ghiaia, Mi ha voltolato nella cenere.

17 E tu hai allontanata l’anima mia dalla pace, Ed io ho dimenticato il bene.

18 E ho detto: Il Signore ha fatta perire la mia forza, E la mia speranza.

19 Ricordati della mia afflizione, E del mio esilio; del tosco e dell’assenzio.

20 L’anima mia se ne ricorda del continuo, E se ne abbatte in me.

21 Questo mi torna alla mente, Perciò spererò ancora.

22 Se non siamo stati del tutto consumati, È per le benignità del Signore; Perciocchè le sue misericordi non son venute meno;

23 Si rinnovano ogni mattina; La tua lealtà è grande.

24 Il Signore è la mia parte, ha detto l’anima mia; Perciò spererò in lui.

25 Il Signore è buono a quelli che l’aspettano, All’anima che lo ricerca.

26 Buona cosa è di aspettare in silenzio La salute del Signore.

27 Buona cosa è all’uomo di portare il giogo Nella sua giovanezza.

28 Sieda egli pur solitario, ed in silenzio, Se Dio gliel’ha imposto!

29 Metta pur la sua bocca nella polvere! Forse, ci sarà ancora speranza;

30 Porga pur la guancia a chi lo percuote; Si sazi pur di vituperio!

31 Poichè il Signore non rigetta in perpetuo;

32 Anzi, se affligge, ha altresì compassione, Secondo la moltitudine delle sue benignità.

33 Perciocchè s’egli affligge, E addolora i figliuoli degli uomini, Non lo fa volentieri.

34 Mentre altri trita sotto i suoi piedi Tutti i prigioni della terra;

35 Mentre altri pervertisce la ragion dell’uomo, Nel cospetto dell’Altissimo;

36 Mentre altri fa torto all’uomo nella sua lite; Il Signore nol vede egli?

37 Chi è colui che abbia detta qualche cosa, e quella sia avvenuta, Che il Signore non l’abbia comandata?

38 Non procedono i mali ed i beni Dalla bocca dell’Altissimo?

39 Perchè si rammarica l’uomo vivente? Perchè si rammarica l’uomo della pena del suo peccato?

40 Esaminiamo le nostre vie, E ricerchiamole e convertiamoci al Signore.

41 Alziamo i nostri cuori, e le palme delle mani, A Dio ne’ cieli, dicendo:

42 Noi abbiam misfatto, e siamo stati ribelli; E tu non hai perdonato.

43 Tu ci hai coperti d’ira, e ci hai perseguitati; Tu hai ucciso e non hai risparmiato.

44 Tu hai distesa una nuvola intorno a te, Acciocchè l’orazione non passasse.

45 Tu ci hai fatti essere spazzature, Ed abbominio, per mezzo i popoli.

46 Tutti i nostri nemici hanno aperta la bocca contro a noi.

47 Noi siamo incorsi in ispavento, ed in fossa; In desolazione, ed in fiaccamento.

48 L’occhio mio cola in rivi d’acque, Per lo fiaccamento della figliuola del mio popolo.

49 L’occhio mio stilla, senza posa, E non ha alcuna requie;

50 Finchè il Signore non riguarda, E non vede dal cielo.

51 L’occhio mio affanna l’anima mia, Per tutte le figliuole della mia città.

52 Quelli che senza cagione, mi son nemici, Mi han cacciato del continuo, come un uccelletto;

53 Hanno troncata la vita mia, e l’hanno messa nella fossa; Ed hanno gettate delle pietre sopra me.

54 Le acque mi hanno inondato fin sopra il capo; Io ho detto: Io son riciso.

55 Io ho invocato il tuo Nome, o Signore, Dalla fossa de’ luoghi bassissimi.

56 Tu hai udita la mia voce; Non nascondere il tuo orecchio al mio sospiro, ed al mio grido.

57 Tu ti sei accostato al giorno che io ti ho invocato; Tu hai detto: Non temere.

58 O Signore, tu hai dibattute le querele dell’anima mia; Tu hai riscossa la vita mia.

59 O Signore, tu vedi il torto che mi è fatto; Giudica la mia causa.

60 Tu vedi tutte le lor vendette, Tutti i lor pensieri contro a me.

61 Tu odi, Signore, i loro obbrobri, Tutte le lor macchinazioni contro a me;

62 Le parole di quelli che mi si levano incontro, Ed i ragionamenti che tengono contro a me tuttodì.

63 Riguarda, quando si seggono, e quando si levano; Io sono la lor canzone.

64 O Signore, rendi loro la retribuzione, Secondo le opere delle lor mani.

65 Da’ loro ingombramento di cuore, La tua maledizione.

66 Perseguili in ira, E disperdili di sotto al cielo del Signore.

1 "I am the man who has experienced suffering under the rod of God's fury.

2 God has driven me away and made me walk in darkness instead of light.

3 He beat me again and again all day long.

4 He has made my flesh and my skin waste away. He has broken my bones.

5 He has attacked me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.

6 He has made me live in darkness, like those who died a long time ago.

7 He has blocked me so that I can't get out. He has put heavy chains on me.

8 Even when I cry and call for help, he shuts out my prayer.

9 He has blocked my way with cut stones and made my paths crooked.

10 He is like a bear waiting to ambush me, like a lion in hiding.

11 He has forced me off the road I was taking, torn me to pieces, and left me with nothing.

12 He has drawn his bow and made me the target for his arrows.

13 He has shot the arrows from his quiver into my heart.

14 I have become a laughingstock to all my people. All day long [they make fun of me] with their songs.

15 He has filled me with bitterness. He has made me drink wormwood.

16 He has ground my teeth with gravel. He has trampled me into the dust.

17 "My soul has been kept from enjoying peace. I have forgotten what happiness is.

18 I said, 'I've lost my strength [to live] and my hope in the LORD.'

19 Remember my suffering and my [aimless] wandering, the wormwood and poison.

20 My soul continues to remember [these things] and is so discouraged.

21 "The reason I can [still] find hope is that I keep this one thing in mind:

22 the LORD's mercy. We were not completely wiped out. His compassion is never limited.

23 It is new every morning. His faithfulness is great.

24 My soul can say, 'The LORD is my lot [in life]. That is why I find hope in him.'

25 The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to anyone who seeks help from him.

26 "It is good to continue to hope and wait silently for the LORD to save us.

27 It is good for people to endure burdens when they're young.

28 They should sit alone and remain silent because the LORD has laid these burdens on them.

29 They should put their mouths in the dust. Maybe a reason to hope exists.

30 They should turn their cheeks to the one who strikes them and take their fill of insults.

31 "The Lord will not reject [such] people forever.

32 Even if he makes us suffer, he will have compassion in keeping with the richness of his mercy.

33 He does not willingly bring suffering or grief to anyone,

34 crush any prisoner on earth underfoot,

35 deny people their rights in the presence of the Most High God,

36 or deprive people of justice in court. The Lord isn't happy to see [these things].

37 Who was it who spoke and it came into being? It was the Lord who gave the order.

38 Both good and bad come from the mouth of the Most High God.

39 "Why should any living mortal (any person) complain about being punished for sin?

40 Let us look closely at our ways and examine them and then return to the LORD.

41 Let us raise our hearts and hands to God in heaven.

42 "We have been disobedient and rebellious. You haven't forgiven us.

43 You covered yourself with anger and pursued us. You killed without pity.

44 You covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer could get through it.

45 You made us the scum and trash of the nations.

46 All our enemies gawk at us.

47 Panic and pitfalls have found us, so have devastation and destruction.

48 "Streams of tears run down from my eyes over the ruin of my dear people.

49 My eyes will keep flowing without stopping for a moment

50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees.

51 What I see with my eyes disturbs me deeply because of all the young women in my city.

52 "Those who were my enemies for no reason hunted me like a bird.

53 They threw me alive into a pit and threw rocks at me.

54 Water flowed over my head. I thought I was finished.

55 "I call your name from the deepest pit, O LORD.

56 Listen to my cry [for help]. Don't close your ears when I cry out for relief.

57 Be close at hand when I call to you. You told me not to be afraid.

58 Plead my case for me, O LORD. Reclaim my life.

59 Look at the wrong that has been done to me, O LORD. Give me a fair verdict.

60 Look at all their malice, all their plots against me.

61 Listen to their insults, all their plots against me.

62 The words and thoughts of those who attack me are directed against me all day long.

63 Look at them! Whether they are sitting or standing, they make fun of me in their songs.

64 Pay them back, O LORD, for what they deserve, for what their own hands have done.

65 Make them stubborn. Let your curse be on them.

66 Pursue them in anger, and wipe them out from under the LORD's heaven."
