New Living Translation NLT
1 ADONAI said to Moshe, "Speak to the cohanim, the sons of Aharon; tell them: 'No cohen is to make himself unclean for any of his people who dies,
1
The LORD said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the priests, the descendants of Aaron. “A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean by touching the dead body of a relative.
2 except for his close relatives -his mother, father, son, daughter and brother;
2
The only exceptions are his closest relatives—his mother or father, son or daughter, brother,
3 he may also make himself unclean for his virgin sister who has never married and is therefore dependent on him.
3
or his virgin sister who depends on him because she has no husband.
4 He may not make himself unclean, because he is a leader among his people; doing so would profane him.
4
But a priest must not defile himself and make himself unclean for someone who is related to him only by marriage.
5 Cohanim are not to make bald spots on their heads, mar the edges of their beards or cut gashes in their flesh.
5
“The priests must not shave their heads or trim their beards or cut their bodies.
6 Rather, they are to be holy for their God and not profane the name of their God. For they are the ones who present ADONAI with offerings made by fire, the bread of their God; therefore they must be holy.
6
They must be set apart as holy to their God and must never bring shame on the name of God. They must be holy, for they are the ones who present the special gifts to the LORD, gifts of food for their God.
7 "'A cohen is not to marry a woman who is a prostitute, who has been profaned or who has been divorced; because he is holy for his God.
7
“Priests may not marry a woman defiled by prostitution, and they may not marry a woman who is divorced from her husband, for the priests are set apart as holy to their God.
8 Rather, you are to set him apart as holy, because he offers the bread of your God; he is to be holy for you, because I, ADONAI, who makes you holy, am holy.
8
You must treat them as holy because they offer up food to your God. You must consider them holy because I, the LORD, am holy, and I make you holy.
9 The daughter of a cohen who profanes herself by prostitution profanes her father; she is to be put to death by fire.
9
“If a priest’s daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she also defiles her father’s holiness, and she must be burned to death.
10 "'The cohen who is ranked highest among his brothers, the one on whose head the anointing oil is poured and who is consecrated to put on the garments, is not to stop grooming his hair, tear his clothes,
10
“The high priest has the highest rank of all the priests. The anointing oil has been poured on his head, and he has been ordained to wear the priestly garments. He must never leave his hair uncombed or tear his clothing.
11 go in to where any dead body is or make himself unclean, even when his father or mother dies.
11
He must not defile himself by going near a dead body. He may not make himself ceremonially unclean even for his father or mother.
12 He may not leave the sanctuary then or profane the sanctuary of his God, because the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is on him; I am ADONAI.
12
He must not defile the sanctuary of his God by leaving it to attend to a dead person, for he has been made holy by the anointing oil of his God. I am the LORD .
13 "'He is to marry a virgin;
13
“The high priest may marry only a virgin.
14 he may not marry a widow, divorcee, profaned woman or prostitute; but he must marry a virgin from among his own people
14
He may not marry a widow, a woman who is divorced, or a woman who has defiled herself by prostitution. She must be a virgin from his own clan,
15 and not disqualify his descendants among his people; because I am ADONAI, who makes him holy.'"
15
so that he will not dishonor his descendants among his clan, for I am the LORD who makes him holy.”
16 ADONAI said to Moshe,
16
Then the LORD said to Moses,
17 "Tell Aharon, 'None of your descendants who has a defect may approach to offer the bread of his God.
17
“Give the following instructions to Aaron: In all future generations, none of your descendants who has any defect will qualify to offer food to his God.
18 No one with a defect may approach - no one blind, lame, with a mutilated face or a limb too long,
18
No one who has a defect qualifies, whether he is blind, lame, disfigured, deformed,
19 a broken foot or a broken arm,
19
or has a broken foot or arm,
20 a hunched back, stunted growth, a cataract in his eye, festering or running sores, or damaged testicles -
20
or is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or has a defective eye, or skin sores or scabs, or damaged testicles.
21 no one descended from Aharon the cohen who has such a defect may approach to present the offerings for ADONAI made by fire; he has a defect and is not to approach to offer the bread of his God.
21
No descendant of Aaron who has a defect may approach the altar to present special gifts to the LORD . Since he has a defect, he may not approach the altar to offer food to his God.
22 He may eat the bread of his God, both the especially holy and the holy;
22
However, he may eat from the food offered to God, including the holy offerings and the most holy offerings.
23 only he is not to go in to the curtain or approach the altar, because he has a defect - so that he will not profane my holy places, because I am ADONAI, who makes them holy.'"
23
Yet because of his physical defect, he may not enter the room behind the inner curtain or approach the altar, for this would defile my holy places. I am the LORD who makes them holy.”
24 Moshe said these things to Aharon, his sons and all the people of Isra'el.
24
So Moses gave these instructions to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.
