1 una autem sabbati valde diluculo venerunt ad monumentum portantes quae paraverant aromata
1 But in one day of the week full early they came to the grave, and brought sweet smelling spices, that they had arrayed [bringing sweet spices, which they had made ready].
2 et invenerunt lapidem revolutum a monumento
2 And they found the stone turned away from the grave.
3 et ingressae non invenerunt corpus Domini Iesu
3 And they went in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 et factum est dum mente consternatae essent de isto ecce duo viri steterunt secus illas in veste fulgenti
4 And it was done, the while [while] they were astonished in thought of this thing, lo! two men stood beside them in shining cloak [+in shining cloth/in shining clothing].
5 cum timerent autem et declinarent vultum in terram dixerunt ad illas quid quaeritis viventem cum mortuis
5 And when they dreaded, and bowed their semblance into the earth, they said to them, What seek ye him that liveth with dead men [What seek ye the living with the dead]?
6 non est hic sed surrexit recordamini qualiter locutus est vobis cum adhuc in Galilaea esset
6 He is not here, but is risen. Have ye mind, how he spake to you, when he was yet in Galilee,
7 dicens quia oportet Filium hominis tradi in manus hominum peccatorum et crucifigi et die tertia resurgere
7 and said [saying], For it behooveth man's Son to be betaken into the hands of sinful men, and to be crucified, and the third day to rise again.
8 et recordatae sunt verborum eius
8 And they bethought on his words.
9 et regressae a monumento nuntiaverunt haec omnia illis undecim et ceteris omnibus
9 And they went again from the grave, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all [the] others.
10 erat autem Maria Magdalene et Iohanna et Maria Iacobi et ceterae quae cum eis erant quae dicebant ad apostolos haec
10 And there was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and other women that were with them, that said to the apostles these things [that said these things to the apostles].
11 et visa sunt ante illos sicut deliramentum verba ista et non credebant illis
11 And these words were seen to them as madness [And these words were seen before them as madness], and they believed not to them.
12 Petrus autem surgens cucurrit ad monumentum et procumbens videt linteamina sola posita et abiit secum mirans quod factum fuerat
12 But Peter rose up, and ran to the grave; and he bowed down, and saw the linen clothes lying alone. And he went by himself, wondering on that that was done. [+Forsooth Peter rising, ran to the grave; and he bowing down, saw the linen clothes put alone. And he went, wondering with himself this thing that was done.]
13 et ecce duo ex illis ibant ipsa die in castellum quod erat in spatio stadiorum sexaginta ab Hierusalem nomine Emmaus
13 And lo! twain of them went in that day into a castle [And lo! two of them went in that day to a castle], that was from Jerusalem the space of sixty furlongs, by name Emmaus.
14 et ipsi loquebantur ad invicem de his omnibus quae acciderant
14 And they spake together of all these things that had befallen.
15 et factum est dum fabularentur et secum quaererent et ipse Iesus adpropinquans ibat cum illis
15 And it was done, the while they talked, and sought by themselves, Jesus himself approached, and went with them. [And it was done, while they talked, and sought with themselves, and Jesus himself nighing, went with them.]
16 oculi autem illorum tenebantur ne eum agnoscerent
16 But their eyes were holden, that they knew him not.
17 et ait ad illos qui sunt hii sermones quos confertis ad invicem ambulantes et estis tristes
17 And he said to them, What be these words, that ye speak together wandering, and ye be sorrowful?
18 et respondens unus cui nomen Cleopas dixit ei tu solus peregrinus es in Hierusalem et non cognovisti quae facta sunt in illa his diebus
18 And one, whose name was Cleopas, answered, and said [to him], Thou thyself art a pilgrim in Jerusalem [+And one answering, to whom the name was Cleopas, said to him, Thou alone art a pilgrim in Jerusalem], and hast thou not known, what things be done in it in these days?
19 quibus ille dixit quae et dixerunt de Iesu Nazareno qui fuit vir propheta potens in opere et sermone coram Deo et omni populo
19 To whom he said, What things? And they said to him, Of Jesus of Nazareth, that was a man prophet, mighty in work and word before God and all the people;
20 et quomodo eum tradiderunt summi sacerdotum et principes nostri in damnationem mortis et crucifixerunt eum
20 and how the high priests and our princes betook him into condemnation of death [and how the highest priests and our princes betook him into damnation of death], and crucified him.
21 nos autem sperabamus quia ipse esset redempturus Israhel et nunc super haec omnia tertia dies hodie quod haec facta sunt
21 But we hoped, that he should have again-bought Israel. And now on all these things the third day is to day, that these things were done.
22 sed et mulieres quaedam ex nostris terruerunt nos quae ante lucem fuerunt ad monumentum
22 But also some women of ours made us afeared, which before day were at the grave [which before the light were at the grave];
23 et non invento corpore eius venerunt dicentes se etiam visionem angelorum vidisse qui dicunt eum vivere
23 and when his body was not found, they came, and said, that they saw also a sight of angels [they came, saying, them also to have seen a sight of angels], which said, that he liveth.
24 et abierunt quidam ex nostris ad monumentum et ita invenerunt sicut mulieres dixerunt ipsum vero non viderunt
24 And some [men] of ours went to the grave, and they found so as the women said, but they found not him [but him they found not].
25 et ipse dixit ad eos o stulti et tardi corde ad credendum in omnibus quae locuti sunt prophetae
25 And he said to them, A! fools [O! fools], and slow of heart to believe in all things that the prophets have spoken.
26 nonne haec oportuit pati Christum et ita intrare in gloriam suam
26 Whether it behooved not Christ to suffer these things, and so to enter into his glory?
27 et incipiens a Mose et omnibus prophetis interpretabatur illis in omnibus scripturis quae de ipso erant
27 And he began at Moses and at all the prophets, and declared to them in all scriptures, that were of him. [And he beginning at Moses and all the prophets, expounded to them in all scriptures, which were of him.]
28 et adpropinquaverunt castello quo ibant et ipse se finxit longius ire
28 And they came nigh to the castle, whither they went. And he made countenance that he would go further.
29 et coegerunt illum dicentes mane nobiscum quoniam advesperascit et inclinata est iam dies et intravit cum illis
29 And they constrained him, and said [saying], Dwell with us, for it draweth to night, and the day is now bowed down. And he entered [in] with them.
30 et factum est dum recumberet cum illis accepit panem et benedixit ac fregit et porrigebat illis
30 And it was done, while he sat at the meat with them, he took bread, and blessed, and brake, and took to them [and gave to them].
31 et aperti sunt oculi eorum et cognoverunt eum et ipse evanuit ex oculis eorum
31 And the eyes of them were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished from their eyes.
32 et dixerunt ad invicem nonne cor nostrum ardens erat in nobis dum loqueretur in via et aperiret nobis scripturas
32 And they said together, Whether our heart was not burning in us, while he spake to us in the way, and [he] opened to us [the] scriptures?
33 et surgentes eadem hora regressi sunt in Hierusalem et invenerunt congregatos undecim et eos qui cum ipsis erant
33 And they rose up in the same hour, and went again into Jerusalem [to Jerusalem], and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
34 dicentes quod surrexit Dominus vere et apparuit Simoni
34 saying, That the Lord is risen verily, and appeared to Simon.
35 et ipsi narrabant quae gesta erant in via et quomodo cognoverunt eum in fractione panis
35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how they knew him in breaking of bread.
36 dum haec autem loquuntur Iesus stetit in medio eorum et dicit eis pax vobis ego sum nolite timere
36 And while they spake these things, Jesus stood in the middle of them, and said to them, Peace to you; I am, do not ye dread.
37 conturbati vero et conterriti existimabant se spiritum videre
37 But they were afraid and aghast, and guessed them to see a spirit.
38 et dixit eis quid turbati estis et cogitationes ascendunt in corda vestra
38 And he said to them, What be ye troubled, and thoughts come up into your hearts [and thoughts ascend up into your hearts]?
39 videte manus meas et pedes quia ipse ego sum palpate et videte quia spiritus carnem et ossa non habet sicut me videtis habere
39 See ye my hands and my feet, for I myself am. Feel ye, and see ye; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see that I have [as ye see me to have].
40 et cum hoc dixisset ostendit eis manus et pedes
40 And when he had said this thing, he showed hands and feet to them.
41 adhuc autem illis non credentibus et mirantibus prae gaudio dixit habetis hic aliquid quod manducetur
41 And yet while they believed not, and wondered for joy, he said, Have ye here any thing that shall be eaten [Have ye any thing here that shall be eaten]?
42 at illi obtulerunt ei partem piscis assi et favum mellis
42 And they proffered to him [And they offered to him] a part of a fish roasted, and an honeycomb.
43 et cum manducasset coram eis sumens reliquias dedit eis
43 And when he had eaten before them, he took that that (was) left, and gave to them; [And when he had eaten before them, he taking the reliefs, gave to them;]
44 et dixit ad eos haec sunt verba quae locutus sum ad vos cum adhuc essem vobiscum quoniam necesse est impleri omnia quae scripta sunt in lege Mosi et prophetis et psalmis de me
44 and [he] said to them, These be the words that I spake to you [and he said to them, These be the words which I spake to you], when I was yet with you; for it is need that all things be fulfilled, that be written in the law of Moses [which be written in the law of Moses], and in prophets, and in psalms, of me.
45 tunc aperuit illis sensum ut intellegerent scripturas
45 Then he opened to them wit [Then he opened wit to them], that they should understand [the] scriptures.
46 et dixit eis quoniam sic scriptum est et sic oportebat Christum pati et resurgere a mortuis die tertia
46 And he said to them, For thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and rise again from death the third day [and to rise again from dead the third day];
47 et praedicari in nomine eius paenitentiam et remissionem peccatorum in omnes gentes incipientibus ab Hierosolyma
47 and penance and remission of sins to be preached in his name to all folks, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 vos autem estis testes horum
48 And ye be witnesses of these things.
49 et ego mitto promissum Patris mei in vos vos autem sedete in civitate quoadusque induamini virtutem ex alto
49 And I shall send the promise of my Father into you [And I send the promise of my Father into you]; but sit ye in the city, till ye be clothed with virtue from on high.
50 eduxit autem eos foras in Bethaniam et elevatis manibus suis benedixit eis
50 And he led them forth into Bethany, and when his hands were lifted up [and, his hands lifted up], he blessed them.
51 et factum est dum benediceret illis recessit ab eis et ferebatur in caelum
51 And it was done, the while he blessed them [while he blessed them], he departed from them, and was borne into heaven.
52 et ipsi adorantes regressi sunt in Hierusalem cum gaudio magno
52 And they worshipped, and went again into Jerusalem with great joy, [And they worshipping went again to Jerusalem with great joy;]
53 et erant semper in templo laudantes et benedicentes Deum amen
53 and were evermore in the temple [and were ever in the temple], praising and blessing God.
