1 Il carico della parola del Signore, indirizzata ad Israele, per Malachia.

2 IO vi ho amati, ha detto il Signore. E voi avete detto: In che ci hai amati? Non era Esaù fratello di Giacobbe? dice il Signore. Or io ho amato Giacobbe;

3 ed ho odiato Esaù, ed ho messi i suoi monti in desolazione, ed ho abbandonata la sua eredità agli sciacalli del deserto.

4 Se pure Edom dice: Noi siamo impoveriti, ma torneremo a edificare i luoghi deserti; così ha detto il Signor degli eserciti: Essi edificheranno, ma io distruggerò; e saranno chiamati: Contrada d’empietà; e: Popolo contro al quale il Signore è indegnato in perpetuo.

5 E gli occhi vostri lo vedranno, e voi direte: Il Signore sia magnificato dalla contrada d’Israele.

6 Il figliuolo deve onorare il padre, e il servitore il suo signore; se dunque io son Padre, ov’è il mio onore? e se son Signore, ov’è il mio timore? ha detto il Signor degli eserciti a voi, o sacerdoti che sprezzate il mio Nome. E pur dite: In che abbiamo noi sprezzato il tuo Nome?

7 Voi offerite sul mio altare del cibo contaminato. E pur dite: In che ti abbiamo noi contaminato? In ciò, che voi dite: La mensa del Signore è spregevole.

8 E quando adducete un animale cieco, per sacrificarlo, non vi è male alcuno? parimente, quando adducete un animale zoppo, o infermo, non vi è male alcuno? presentalo pure al tuo governatore; te ne saprà egli grado, o gli sarai tu accettevole? ha detto il Signor degli eserciti.

9 Ora dunque, supplicate pure a Dio, ch’egli abbia pietà di noi; questo essendo proceduto dalle vostre mani, sarebbegli alcun di voi accettevole? ha detto il Signor degli eserciti.

10 Chi è eziandio d’infra voi colui che serri le porte? E pur voi non accendete il fuoco sopra il mio altare per nulla. Io non vi gradisco, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti; e non accetterò alcuna offerta dalle vostre mani.

11 Ma dal sol levante fino al ponente, il mio Nome sarà grande fra le genti; e in ogni luogo si offerirà al mio Nome profumo, ed offerta pura; perciocchè il mio Nome sarà grande fra le genti, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti.

12 Ma quant’è a voi, voi lo profanate, dicendo: La mensa del Signore è contaminata; e quant’è alla sua rendita, il suo cibo è spregevole.

13 Voi avete eziandio detto: Ecco, quanta fatica! E pure a lui avete dato l’affanno, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti; mentre adducete animali rapiti, e zoppi, ed infermi; e li adducete per offerta, li gradirei io dalla vostra mano? ha detto il Signore.

14 Or maledetto sia il frodolente, il quale, avendo nella sua mandra un maschio, vota, e sacrifica al Signore un animale difettoso; conciossiachè io sia il gran Re, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti; e il mio Nome sia tremendo fra le genti.

1 This is a divine revelation. The LORD spoke his word to Israel through Malachi.

2 "I loved you," says the LORD. "But you ask, 'How did you love us?' "Wasn't Esau Jacob's brother?" declares the LORD. "I loved Jacob,

3 but Esau I hated. I turned his mountains into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the jackals in the desert.

4 "The descendants of Esau may say, 'We have been beaten down, but we will rebuild the ruins.' "Yet, this is what the LORD of Armies says: They may rebuild, but I will tear it down. They will be called 'the Wicked Land' and 'the people with whom the LORD is always angry.'

5 You will see these things with your own eyes and say, 'Even outside the borders of Israel the LORD is great.'

6 "This is what the LORD of Armies says: A son honors his father, and a servant honors his master. So if I am a father, where is my honor? If I am a master, where is my respect? You priests despise my name. "But you ask, 'How have we despised your name?'

7 "You offer contaminated food on my altar. "But you ask, 'Then how have we contaminated you?' "When you say that the LORD's table may be despised.

8 When you bring a blind animal to sacrifice, isn't that wrong? When you bring a lame or a sick animal, isn't that wrong? Try offering it to your governor. Would he accept it from you? Would he welcome you?" asks the LORD of Armies.

9 "Now try asking God to be kind to you. This is what you are doing! Will he welcome you?" asks the LORD of Armies.

10 "I wish one of you would shut the doors [to my house] so that you could not light fires on my altar for no reason. I'm not pleased with you," says the LORD of Armies, "and I won't accept your offerings.

11 "From the nations where the sun rises to the nations where the sun sets, my name will be great. Incense and pure offerings will be offered everywhere in my name, because my name will be great among the nations," says the LORD of Armies.

12 "But you dishonor it when you say that the Lord's table may be contaminated and that its food may be despised.

13 "You say, 'Oh what a nuisance it is,' and you sniff at it in disgust," says the LORD of Armies. "You bring stolen, lame, and sick animals. When you bring such offerings, should I accept them from you?" asks the LORD.

14 "Cheaters are under a curse. They have male animals in their flocks that they vow to give [as a sacrifice]. But they sacrifice second-rate ones to the Lord instead. I am a great king," says the LORD of Armies. "Among the nations my name is respected.
