1 Ecco, io mando il mio Angelo, ed egli acconcerà la via davanti a me; e subito il Signore, il qual voi cercate, e l’Angelo del Patto, il qual voi desiderate, verrà nel suo tempio; ecco, egli viene, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti.

2 E chi sosterrà il giorno della sua venuta? e chi durerà, quando egli apparirà? perciocchè egli è come il fuoco di chi fonde i metalli, e come l’erba de’ purgatori di panni.

3 Ed egli sederà, struggendo, e purgando l’argento; e netterà i figliuoli di Levi, e li affinerà a guisa dell’oro, e dell’argento; ed essi offeriranno al Signore offerte in giustizia.

4 E l’offerta di Giuda, e di Gerusalemme, sarà piacevole al Signore, come a’ dì antichi, e come negli anni di prima.

5 Ed io mi accosterò a voi in giudicio; e sarò testimonio pronto contro agl’incantatori, e contro agli adulteri, e contro a quelli che giurano falsamente, e contro a quelli che fraudano il mercenario della sua mercede; ed oppressano la vedova, e l’orfano; e pervertono il diritto del forestiere, e non mi temono, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti.

6 Perciocchè io sono il Signore che non mi muto, voi, figliuoli di Giacobbe, non siete stati consumati.

7 FIN dal tempo de’ vostri padri, voi vi siete stornati da’ miei statuti, e non li avete osservati. Convertitevi a me, ed io mi rivolgerò a voi, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti. E pur voi dite: In che ci convertiremo?

8 L’uomo deve egli rubare Iddio, che voi mi rubate? E pur dite: In che ti abbiam noi rubato? Nelle decime, e nelle offerte.

9 Voi sarete maledetti di maledizione, perciocchè mi rubate, o nazione tutta quanta.

10 Portate tutte le decime nelle conserve, e siavi del cibo nella mia Casa; e fin da ora provatemi in questo, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti, se io non vi apro le cateratte del cielo, e non vi verso tanta benedizione che non le basterete.

11 Io sgriderò, oltre a ciò, per amor vostro, le bestie divoranti, ed esse non guasteranno più i frutti della terra, e le vostre viti non isperderanno più ne’ campi, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti.

12 E tutte le genti vi predicheranno beati; perciocchè voi sarete un paese di diletto, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti.

13 Voi avete usate parole dure contro a me, ha detto il Signore. E pur dite: Che abbiamo noi detto contro a te?

14 Voi avete detto: In vano si serve a Dio; e che abbiamo noi guadagnato, mentre abbiamo osservato ciò ch’egli ha comandato che si osservi, e mentre siam camminati vestiti a bruno, per lo Signor degli eserciti?

15 Or dunque noi reputiamo beati i superbi; benchè operino empiamente, pur sono edificati; benchè tentino il Signore, pur sono scampati.

16 Allora coloro che temono il Signore han parlato l’uno all’altro, e il Signore è stato attento, e l’ha udito; ed un libro di memoria è stato scritto nel suo cospetto, per coloro che temono il Signore, e che pensano al suo Nome.

17 E quelli mi saranno, ha detto il Signor degli eserciti, nel giorno che io opererò, un tesoro riposto; ed io li risparmierò, come un uomo risparmia il suo figliuolo che lo serve.

18 E se pur voi vi convertite, voi vedrete qual differenza vi è tra il giusto e l’empio; tra colui che serve Iddio, e colui che non lo serve.

1 "I'm going to send my messenger, and he will clear the way ahead of me. Then the Lord you are looking for will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the promise will come. He is the one you want," says the LORD of Armies.

2 But who will be able to endure the day he comes? Who will be able to survive on the day he appears? He is like a purifying fire and like a cleansing soap.

3 He will act like a refiner and a purifier of silver. He will purify Levi's sons and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will bring acceptable offerings to the LORD.

4 The offerings from Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the past, as in years long ago.

5 "I will come to judge you. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers, lying witnesses, and those who cheat workers out of their wages and oppress widows and orphans. I will also testify against those who deprive foreigners of their rights. None of them fear me," says the LORD of Armies.

6 "I, the LORD, never change. That is why you descendants of Jacob haven't been destroyed yet.

7 Since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my laws and have not followed them. Return to me, and I will return to you," says the LORD of Armies. "But you ask, 'How can we return?'

8 "Can a person cheat God? Yet, you are cheating me! "But you ask, 'How are we cheating you?' "When [you don't bring] a tenth of your income and other contributions.

9 So a curse is on you because the whole nation is cheating me!

10 "Bring one-tenth of your income into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way," says the LORD of Armies. "See if I won't open the windows of heaven for you and flood you with blessings.

11 Then, for your sake, I will stop insects from eating [your crops]. They will not destroy the produce of your land. The vines in your fields will not lose their unripened grapes," says the LORD of Armies.

12 "All nations will call you blessed because you will be a delightful land," says the LORD of Armies.

13 "You have used harsh words against me," says the LORD. "You ask, 'How have we spoken against you?'

14 "You have said, 'It's pointless to serve God. What do we gain if we meet his standards or if we walk around feeling sorry for what we've done?

15 So now we call arrogant people blessed. Not only are evildoers encouraged, they even test God and get away with it.'"

16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD paid attention and listened. A book was written in his presence to be a reminder to those who feared the LORD and respected his name.

17 "They will be mine," says the LORD of Armies. "On that day I will make them my special possession. I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.

18 Then you will again see the difference between righteous people and wicked people, between the one who serves God and the one who doesn't serve him.
