1 Cuidad de no practicar vuestra justicia delante de los hombres para ser vistos por ellos; de otra manera no tendréis recompensa de vuestro Padre que está en los cielos.

2 Por eso, cuando des limosna, no toques trompeta delante de ti, como hacen los hipócritas en las sinagogas y en las calles, para ser alabados por los hombres. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa.

3 Pero tú, cuando des limosna, que no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace tu derecha,

4 para que tu limosna sea en secreto; y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará .

5 Y cuando oréis, no seáis como los hipócritas; porque a ellos les gusta ponerse en pie y orar en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las calles, para ser vistos por los hombres. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa.

6 Pero tú, cuando ores, entra en tu aposento, y cuando hayas cerrado la puerta, ora a tu Padre que está en secreto, y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará.

7 Y al orar, no uséis repeticiones sin sentido, como los gentiles, porque ellos se imaginan que serán oídos por su palabrería.

8 Por tanto, no os hagáis semejantes a ellos; porque vuestro Padre sabe lo que necesitáis antes que vosotros le pidáis.

9 Vosotros, pues, orad de esta manera: "Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos, santificado sea tu nombre.

10 "Venga tu reino. Hágase tu voluntad, así en la tierra como en el cielo.

11 "Danos hoy el pan nuestro de cada día.

12 "Y perdónanos nuestras deudas, como también nosotros hemos perdonado a nuestros deudores.

13 "Y no nos metas en tentación, mas líbranos del mal. Porque tuyo es el reino y el poder y la gloria para siempre jamás. Amén."

14 Porque si perdonáis a los hombres sus transgresiones, también vuestro Padre celestial os perdonará a vosotros.

15 Pero si no perdonáis a los hombres, tampoco vuestro Padre perdonará vuestras transgresiones.

16 Y cuando ayunéis, no pongáis cara triste, como los hipócritas; porque ellos desfiguran sus rostros para mostrar a los hombres que están ayunando. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa.

17 Pero tú, cuando ayunes, unge tu cabeza y lava tu rostro,

18 para no hacer ver a los hombres que ayunas, sino a tu Padre que está en secreto; y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará.

19 No os acumuléis tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y la herrumbre destruyen, y donde ladrones penetran y roban;

20 sino acumulaos tesoros en el cielo, donde ni la polilla ni la herrumbre destruyen, y donde ladrones no penetran ni roban;

21 porque donde esté tu tesoro, allí estará también tu corazón.

22 La lámpara del cuerpo es el ojo; por eso, si tu ojo está sano, todo tu cuerpo estará lleno de luz.

23 Pero si tu ojo está malo, todo tu cuerpo estará lleno de oscuridad. Así que, si la luz que hay en ti es oscuridad, ¡cuán grande no será la oscuridad!

24 Nadie puede servir a dos señores; porque o aborrecerá a uno y amará al otro, o se apegará a uno y despreciará al otro. No podéis servir a Dios y a las riquezas .

25 Por eso os digo, no os preocupéis por vuestra vida, qué comeréis o qué beberéis; ni por vuestro cuerpo, qué vestiréis. ¿No es la vida más que el alimento y el cuerpo más que la ropa?

26 Mirad las aves del cielo, que no siembran, ni siegan, ni recogen en graneros, y sin embargo, vuestro Padre celestial las alimenta. ¿No sois vosotros de mucho más valor que ellas?

27 ¿Y quién de vosotros, por ansioso que esté, puede añadir una hora al curso de su vida ?

28 Y por la ropa, ¿por qué os preocupáis? Observad cómo crecen los lirios del campo; no trabajan, ni hilan;

29 pero os digo que ni Salomón en toda su gloria se vistió como uno de éstos.

30 Y si Dios viste así la hierba del campo, que hoy es y mañana es echada al horno, ¿no hará mucho más por vosotros, hombres de poca fe?

31 Por tanto, no os preocupéis, diciendo: "¿Qué comeremos?" o "¿qué beberemos?" o "¿con qué nos vestiremos?"

32 Porque los gentiles buscan ansiosamente todas estas cosas; que vuestro Padre celestial sabe que necesitáis todas estas cosas.

33 Pero buscad primero su reino y su justicia, y todas estas cosas os serán añadidas.

34 Por tanto, no os preocupéis por el día de mañana; porque el día de mañana se cuidará de sí mismo. Bástele a cada día sus propios problemas.

1 "Be especially careful when you are trying to be good so that you don't make a performance out of it. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won't be applauding.

2 "When you do something for someone else, don't call attention to yourself. You've seen them in action, I'm sure - 'playactors' I call them - treating prayer meeting and street corner alike as a stage, acting compassionate as long as someone is watching, playing to the crowds. They get applause, true, but that's all they get.

3 When you help someone out, don't think about how it looks.

4 Just do it - quietly and unobtrusively. That is the way your God, who conceived you in love, working behind the scenes, helps you out.

5 "And when you come before God, don't turn that into a theatrical production either. All these people making a regular show out of their prayers, hoping for stardom! Do you think God sits in a box seat?

6 "Here's what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won't be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace.

7 "The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They're full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God.

8 Don't fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need.

9 With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this: Our Father in heaven, Reveal who you are.

10 Set the world right; Do what's best - as above, so below.

11 Keep us alive with three square meals.

12 Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.

13 Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil. You're in charge! You can do anything you want! You're ablaze in beauty! Yes. Yes. Yes.

14 "In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can't get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others.

18 God doesn't require attention-getting devices. He won't overlook what you are doing; he'll reward you well. A Life of God-Worship

19 "Don't hoard treasure down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust or - worse! - stolen by burglars.

20 Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it's safe from moth and rust and burglars.

26 Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.

27 "Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch?

28 All this time and money wasted on fashion - do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop,

29 but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.

30 "If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers - most of which are never even seen - don't you think he'll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you?

31 What I'm trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God's giving.

32 People who don't know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works.

33 Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don't worry about missing out. You'll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

34 "Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.
