Matthew 15

CEB 1 Then Pharisees and legal experts came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, NRS 1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, CEB 2 "Why are your disciples breaking the elders' rules handed down to us? They don't ritually purify their hands by washing before they eat." NRS 2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands before they eat." CEB 3 Jesus replied, "Why do you break the command of God by keeping the rules handed down to you? NRS 3 He answered them, "And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? CEB 4 For God said, Honor your father and your mother, and The person who speaks against father or mother will certainly be put to death. NRS 4 For God said, "Honor your father and your mother,' and, "Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.' CEB 5 But you say, ‘If you tell your father or mother, Everything I'm expected to contribute to you I'm giving to God as a gift, then you don't have to honor your father.' NRS 5 But you say that whoever tells father or mother, "Whatever support you might have had from me is given to God,' then that person need not honor the father. CEB 6 So you do away with God's Law for the sake of the rules that have been handed down to you. NRS 6 So, for the sake of your tradition, you make void the word of God. CEB 7 Hypocrites! Isaiah really knew what he was talking about when he prophesied about you, NRS 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said: CEB 8 This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far away from me. NRS 8 "This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; CEB 9 Their worship of me is empty since they teach instructions that are human rules." NRS 9 in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.' " CEB 10 Jesus called the crowd near and said to them, "Listen and understand. NRS 10 Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, "Listen and understand: CEB 11 It's not what goes into the mouth that contaminates a person in God's sight. It's what comes out of the mouth that contaminates the person." NRS 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles." CEB 12 Then the disciples came and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended by what you just said?" NRS 12 Then the disciples approached and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?" CEB 13 Jesus replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father didn't plant will be pulled up. NRS 13 He answered, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. CEB 14 Leave the Pharisees alone. They are blind people who are guides to blind people. But if a blind person leads another blind person, they will both fall into a ditch." NRS 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit." CEB 15 Then Peter spoke up, "Explain this riddle to us." NRS 15 But Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us." CEB 16 Jesus said, "Don't you understand yet? NRS 16 Then he said, "Are you also still without understanding? CEB 17 Don't you know that everything that goes into the mouth enters the stomach and goes out into the sewer? NRS 17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? CEB 18 But what goes out of the mouth comes from the heart. And that's what contaminates a person in God's sight. NRS 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. CEB 19 Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adultery, sexual sins, thefts, false testimonies, and insults. NRS 19 For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. CEB 20 These contaminate a person in God's sight. But eating without washing hands doesn't contaminate in God's sight." NRS 20 These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile." CEB 21 From there, Jesus went to the regions of Tyre and Sidon. NRS 21 Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. CEB 22 A Canaanite woman from those territories came out and shouted, "Show me mercy, Son of David. My daughter is suffering terribly from demon possession." NRS 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon." CEB 23 But he didn't respond to her at all. His disciples came and urged him, "Send her away; she keeps shouting out after us." NRS 23 But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, "Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us." CEB 24 Jesus replied, "I've been sent only to the lost sheep, the people of Israel." NRS 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." CEB 25 But she knelt before him and said, "Lord, help me." NRS 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." CEB 26 He replied, "It is not good to take the children's bread and toss it to dogs." NRS 26 He answered, "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." CEB 27 She said, "Yes, Lord. But even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall off their masters' table." NRS 27 She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." CEB 28 Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith. It will be just as you wish." And right then her daughter was healed. NRS 28 Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed instantly. CEB 29 Jesus moved on from there along the shore of the Galilee Sea. He went up a mountain and sat down. NRS 29 After Jesus had left that place, he passed along the Sea of Galilee, and he went up the mountain, where he sat down. CEB 30 Large crowds came to him, including those who were paralyzed, blind, injured, and unable to speak, and many others. They laid them at his feet, and he healed them. NRS 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the maimed, the blind, the mute, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he cured them, CEB 31 So the crowd was amazed when they saw those who had been unable to speak talking, and the paralyzed cured, and the injured walking, and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. NRS 31 so that the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. CEB 32 Now Jesus called his disciples and said, "I feel sorry for the crowd because they have been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry for fear they won't have enough strength to travel." NRS 32 Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way." CEB 33 His disciples replied, "Where are we going to get enough food in this wilderness to satisfy such a big crowd?" NRS 33 The disciples said to him, "Where are we to get enough bread in the desert to feed so great a crowd?" CEB 34 Jesus said, "How much bread do you have?" They responded, "Seven loaves and a few fish." NRS 34 Jesus asked them, "How many loaves have you?" They said, "Seven, and a few small fish." CEB 35 He told the crowd to sit on the ground. NRS 35 Then ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground, CEB 36 He took the seven loaves of bread and the fish. After he gave thanks, he broke them into pieces and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. NRS 36 he took the seven loaves and the fish; and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. CEB 37 Everyone ate until they were full. The disciples collected seven baskets full of leftovers. NRS 37 And all of them ate and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. CEB 38 Four thousand men ate, plus women and children. NRS 38 Those who had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children. CEB 39 After dismissing the crowds, Jesus got into the boat and came to the region of Magadan. NRS 39 After sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
