Matthew 15

NIRV 1 Some Pharisees and some teachers of the law came from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked, NIV 1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, NIRV 2 "Why don't your disciples obey what the elders teach? Your disciples don't wash their hands before they eat!" NIV 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!” NIRV 3 Jesus replied, "And why don't you obey God's command? You would rather follow your own teachings! NIV 3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? NIRV 4 God said, 'Honor your father and mother.'(Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16) He also said, 'If anyone calls down a curse on his father or mother, he will be put to death.'(Exodus 21:17; Leviticus 20:9) NIV 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ NIRV 5 But you allow people to say to their parents, 'Any help you might have received from us is a gift set apart for God.' NIV 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ NIRV 6 So they do not need to honor their parents with their gift. You make the word of God useless in order to follow your own teachings. NIV 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. NIRV 7 "You pretenders! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you. He said, NIV 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: NIRV 8 " 'These people honor me by what they say. But their hearts are far away from me. NIV 8 “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. NIRV 9 Their worship doesn't mean anything to me. They teach nothing but human rules.' " (Isaiah 29:13) NIV 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’” NIRV 10 Jesus called the crowd to him. He said, "Listen and understand. NIV 10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. NIRV 11 What goes into your mouth does not make you 'unclean.' It's what comes out of your mouth that makes you 'unclean.' " NIV 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.” NIRV 12 Then the disciples came to him. They asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were angry when they heard this?" NIV 12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?” NIRV 13 Jesus replied, "There are plants that my Father in heaven has not planted. They will be pulled up by the roots. NIV 13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. NIRV 14 Leave them. The Pharisees are blind guides. If a blind person leads another who is blind, both of them will fall into a pit." NIV 14 Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” NIRV 15 Peter said, "Explain this to us." NIV 15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.” NIRV 16 "Don't you understand yet?" Jesus asked them. NIV 16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. NIRV 17 "Don't you see? Everything that enters the mouth goes into the stomach. Then it goes out of the body. NIV 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? NIRV 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart. Those are the things that make you 'unclean.' NIV 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. NIRV 19 Evil thoughts come out of the heart. So do murder, adultery, and other sexual sins. And so do stealing, false witness, and telling lies about others. NIV 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. NIRV 20 Those are the things that make you 'unclean.' But eating without washing your hands does not make you 'unclean.' " NIV 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.” NIRV 21 Jesus left Galilee and went to the area of Tyre and Sidon. NIV 21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. NIRV 22 A woman from Canaan lived near Tyre and Sidon. She came to him and cried out, "Lord! Son of David! Have mercy on me! A demon controls my daughter. She is suffering terribly." NIV 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.” NIRV 23 Jesus did not say a word. So his disciples came to him. They begged him, "Send her away. She keeps crying out after us." NIV 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” NIRV 24 Jesus answered, "I was sent only to the people of Israel. They are like lost sheep." NIV 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” NIRV 25 Then the woman fell to her knees in front of him. "Lord! Help me!" she said. NIV 25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. NIRV 26 He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to their dogs." NIV 26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” NIRV 27 "Yes, Lord," she said. "But even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their owners' table." NIV 27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” NIRV 28 Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! You will be given what you are asking for." And her daughter was healed at that very moment. NIV 28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment. NIRV 29 Jesus left there. He walked along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. NIV 29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. NIRV 30 Large crowds came to him. They brought blind people and those who could not walk. They also brought disabled people, those who could not speak, and many others. They laid them at his feet, and he healed them. NIV 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. NIRV 31 The people were amazed. Those who could not speak were speaking. The disabled were made well. Those not able to walk were walking. Those who were blind could see. So the people praised the God of Israel. NIV 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. NIRV 32 Then Jesus called for his disciples to come to him. He said, "I feel deep concern for these people. They have already been with me three days. They don't have anything to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry. If I do, they will become too weak on their way home." NIV 32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.” NIRV 33 His disciples answered him. "There is nothing here," they said. "Where could we get enough bread to feed this large crowd?" NIV 33 His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?” NIRV 34 "How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they replied, "and a few small fish." NIV 34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.” NIRV 35 Jesus told the crowd to sit down on the ground. NIV 35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. NIRV 36 He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks. Then he broke them and gave them to the disciples. And the disciples passed them out to the people. NIV 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. NIRV 37 All of them ate and were satisfied. After that, the disciples picked up seven baskets of leftover pieces. NIV 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. NIRV 38 The number of men who ate was 4,000. Women and children also ate. NIV 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. NIRV 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat. He went to the area near Magadan.
