Matthew 16

CEB 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus. In order to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. NRS 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test Jesus they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. CEB 2 But he replied, "At evening you say, ‘It will be nice weather because the sky is bright red.' NRS 2 He answered them, "When it is evening, you say, "It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' CEB 3 And in the morning you say, ‘There will be bad weather today because the sky is cloudy.' You know how to make sense of the sky's appearance. But you are unable to recognize the signs that point to what the time is. NRS 3 And in the morning, "It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. CEB 4 An evil and unfaithful generation searches for a sign. But it won't receive any sign except Jonah's sign." Then he left them and went away. NRS 4 An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." Then he left them and went away. CEB 5 When the disciples arrived on the other side of the lake, they had forgotten to bring bread. NRS 5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. CEB 6 Jesus said to them, "Watch out and be on your guard for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." NRS 6 Jesus said to them, "Watch out, and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." CEB 7 They discussed this among themselves and said, "We didn't bring any bread." NRS 7 They said to one another, "It is because we have brought no bread." CEB 8 Jesus knew what they were discussing and said, "You people of weak faith! Why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you don't have any bread? NRS 8 And becoming aware of it, Jesus said, "You of little faith, why are you talking about having no bread? CEB 9 Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the five loaves that fed the five thousand and how many baskets of leftovers you gathered? NRS 9 Do you still not perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? CEB 10 And the seven loaves that fed the four thousand and how many large baskets of leftovers you gathered? NRS 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? CEB 11 Don't you know that I wasn't talking about bread? But be on your guard for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." NRS 11 How could you fail to perceive that I was not speaking about bread? Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!" CEB 12 Then they understood that he wasn't telling them to be on their guard for yeast used in making bread. No, he was telling them to watch out for the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. NRS 12 Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. CEB 13 Now when Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Human One is?" NRS 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" CEB 14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the other prophets." NRS 14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." CEB 15 He said, "And what about you? Who do you say that I am?" NRS 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" CEB 16 Simon Peter said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." NRS 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." CEB 17 Then Jesus replied, "Happy are you, Simon son of Jonah, because no human has shown this to you. Rather my Father who is in heaven has shown you. NRS 17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. CEB 18 I tell you that you are Peter. And I'll build my church on this rock. The gates of the underworld won't be able to stand against it. NRS 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. CEB 19 I'll give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Anything you fasten on earth will be fastened in heaven. Anything you loosen on earth will be loosened in heaven." NRS 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." CEB 20 Then he ordered the disciples not to tell anybody that he was the Christ. NRS 20 Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. CEB 21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he had to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and legal experts, and that he had to be killed and raised on the third day. NRS 21 From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. CEB 22 Then Peter took hold of Jesus and, scolding him, began to correct him: "God forbid, Lord! This won't happen to you." NRS 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you." CEB 23 But he turned to Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are a stone that could make me stumble, for you are not thinking God's thoughts but human thoughts." NRS 23 But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." CEB 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. NRS 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. CEB 25 All who want to save their lives will lose them. But all who lose their lives because of me will find them. NRS 25 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. CEB 26 Why would people gain the whole world but lose their lives? What will people give in exchange for their lives? NRS 26 For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? CEB 27 For the Human One is about to come with the majesty of his Father with his angels. And then he will repay each one for what that person has done. NRS 27 "For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. CEB 28 I assure you that some standing here won't die before they see the Human One coming in his kingdom." NRS 28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
