1 Ὁμοία γάρ ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅστις ἐξῆλθεν ἅμα πρωῒ μισθώσασθαι ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ.

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
2 συμφωνήσας δὲ ⸃ μετὰ τῶν ἐργατῶν ἐκ δηναρίου τὴν ἡμέραν ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ.

He agreed to pay them a denariusfor the day and sent them into his vineyard.
3 καὶ ἐξελθὼν περὶ τρίτην ὥραν εἶδεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ ἀργούς ·

“About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.
4 καὶ ἐκείνοις εἶπεν · Ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα, καὶ ὃ ἐὰν ᾖ δίκαιον δώσω ὑμῖν ·

He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’
5 οἱ δὲ ἀπῆλθον. πάλιν ἐξελθὼν περὶ ἕκτην καὶ ἐνάτην ὥραν ἐποίησεν ὡσαύτως.

So they went. “He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.
6 περὶ δὲ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ἐξελθὼν εὗρεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς · Τί ὧδε ἑστήκατε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀργοί;

About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’
7 λέγουσιν αὐτῷ · Ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἡμᾶς ἐμισθώσατο. λέγει αὐτοῖς · Ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα.

“ ‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. “He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’
8 ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης λέγει ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος τῷ ἐπιτρόπῳ αὐτοῦ · Κάλεσον τοὺς ἐργάτας καὶ ἀπόδος αὐτοῖς τὸν μισθὸν ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐσχάτων ἕως τῶν πρώτων.

“When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’
9 καὶ ἐλθόντες ⸃ οἱ περὶ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ὥραν ἔλαβον ἀνὰ δηνάριον.

“The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.
10 καὶ ἐλθόντες ⸃ οἱ πρῶτοι ἐνόμισαν ὅτι πλεῖον λήμψονται · καὶ ἔλαβον τὸ ἀνὰ δηνάριον καὶ αὐτοί.

So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.
11 λαβόντες δὲ ἐγόγγυζον κατὰ τοῦ οἰκοδεσπότου

When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
12 λέγοντες · Οὗτοι οἱ ἔσχατοι μίαν ὥραν ἐποίησαν, καὶ ἴσους αὐτοὺς ἡμῖν ⸃ ἐποίησας τοῖς βαστάσασι τὸ βάρος τῆς ἡμέρας καὶ τὸν καύσωνα.

‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’
13 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς ἑνὶ αὐτῶν εἶπεν ⸃· Ἑταῖρε, οὐκ ἀδικῶ σε · οὐχὶ δηναρίου συνεφώνησάς μοι;

“But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius?
14 ἆρον τὸ σὸν καὶ ὕπαγε · θέλω δὲ τούτῳ τῷ ἐσχάτῳ δοῦναι ὡς καὶ σοί ·

Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.
15 οὐκ ἔξεστίν μοι ὃ θέλω ποιῆσαι ⸃ ἐν τοῖς ἐμοῖς; ἢ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρός ἐστιν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἀγαθός εἰμι;

Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
16 οὕτως ἔσονται οἱ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι.

“So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
17 Καὶ ἀναβαίνων ὁ ⸃ Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παρέλαβεν τοὺς δώδεκα μαθητὰς κατ’ ἰδίαν, καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ⸃ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ·

Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them,
18 Ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα, καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθήσεται τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ γραμματεῦσιν, καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτὸν θανάτῳ,

“We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death
19 καὶ παραδώσουσιν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εἰς τὸ ἐμπαῖξαι καὶ μαστιγῶσαι καὶ σταυρῶσαι, καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται.

and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”
20 Τότε προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῆς προσκυνοῦσα καὶ αἰτοῦσά τι παρ’ αὐτοῦ.

Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.
21 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ · Τί θέλεις; λέγει αὐτῷ · Εἰπὲ ἵνα καθίσωσιν οὗτοι οἱ δύο υἱοί μου εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν σου καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων σου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου.

“What is it you want?” he asked. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
22 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν · Οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε · δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ὃ ἐγὼ μέλλω πίνειν; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ · Δυνάμεθα.

“You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?”“We can,” they answered.
23 λέγει αὐτοῖς · Τὸ μὲν ποτήριόν μου πίεσθε, τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν δοῦναι, ἀλλ’ οἷς ἡτοίμασται ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός μου.

Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
24 Καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ δέκα ἠγανάκτησαν περὶ τῶν δύο ἀδελφῶν.

When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.
25 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς εἶπεν · Οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἐθνῶν κατακυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι κατεξουσιάζουσιν αὐτῶν.

Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
26 οὐχ οὕτως ἔσται ἐν ὑμῖν · ἀλλ’ ὃς ἂν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν μέγας γενέσθαι ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος,

Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
27 καὶ ὃς ἂν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι πρῶτος ἔσται ὑμῶν δοῦλος ·
27
and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—
28 ὥσπερ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν διακονηθῆναι ἀλλὰ διακονῆσαι καὶ δοῦναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν.

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
29 Καὶ ἐκπορευομένων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Ἰεριχὼ ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς.

As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
30 καὶ ἰδοὺ δύο τυφλοὶ καθήμενοι παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν, ἀκούσαντες ὅτι Ἰησοῦς παράγει, ἔκραξαν λέγοντες · Κύριε, ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς, υἱὸς Δαυίδ.

Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
31 ὁ δὲ ὄχλος ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σιωπήσωσιν · οἱ δὲ μεῖζον ἔκραξαν λέγοντες · Κύριε, ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς, υἱὸς Δαυίδ.

The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
32 καὶ στὰς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπεν · Τί θέλετε ποιήσω ὑμῖν;

Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
33 λέγουσιν αὐτῷ · Κύριε, ἵνα ἀνοιγῶσιν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν.

“Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”
34 σπλαγχνισθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἥψατο τῶν ὀμμάτων αὐτῶν, καὶ εὐθέως ἀνέβλεψαν καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ.

Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
