1 Y hubo gran clamor del pueblo y de sus mujeres contra sus hermanos judíos.

2 Había quienes decían: Nosotros, nuestros hijos y nuestras hijas somos muchos; por tanto, que se nos dé trigo para que comamos y vivamos.

3 Había otros que decían: Nosotros tenemos que empeñar nuestros campos, nuestras viñas y nuestras casas para conseguir grano, a causa del hambre.

4 También había otros que decían: Hemos pedido dinero prestado para el impuesto del rey sobre nuestros campos y nuestras viñas.

5 Ahora bien, nuestra carne es como la carne de nuestros hermanos, y nuestros hijos como sus hijos. Sin embargo, he aquí, estamos obligando a nuestros hijos y a nuestras hijas a que sean esclavos, y algunas de nuestras hijas ya están sometidas a servidumbre, y no podemos hacer nada porque nuestros campos y nuestras viñas pertenecen a otros.

6 Entonces me enojé en gran manera cuando oí su clamor y estas palabras.

7 Se rebeló mi corazón dentro de mí, y contendí con los nobles y con los oficiales y les dije: Estáis cobrando usura cada uno a su hermano. Y congregué contra ellos una gran asamblea.

8 Y les dije: Nosotros, conforme a nuestras posibilidades, hemos redimido a nuestros hermanos judíos que fueron vendidos a las naciones; y ahora, ¿venderéis a vuestros hermanos para que sean vendidos a nosotros? Entonces se quedaron callados y no hallaron respuesta.

9 Y agregué: No está bien lo que hacéis; ¿no debéis andar en el temor de nuestro Dios a causa del oprobio de las naciones enemigas nuestras?

10 También yo y mis hermanos y mis siervos les hemos prestado dinero y grano. Os ruego, pues, que abandonemos esta usura.

11 Os ruego que hoy mismo les devolváis sus campos, sus viñas, sus olivares y sus casas; también la centésima parte del dinero y del grano, del mosto y del aceite que estáis exigiendo de ellos.

12 Entonces ellos dijeron: Lo devolveremos y no les exigiremos nada; haremos tal como has dicho. Y llamé a los sacerdotes y les hice jurar que harían conforme a esta promesa.

13 También sacudí los pliegues de mi manto y dije: Así sacuda Dios de su casa y de sus bienes a todo hombre que no cumpla esta promesa; así sea sacudido y despojado. Y toda la asamblea dijo: ¡Amén! Y alabaron al SEÑOR. Entonces el pueblo hizo conforme a esta promesa.

14 Además, desde el día en que el rey me mandó que fuera gobernador en la tierra de Judá, desde el año veinte hasta el año treinta y dos del rey Artajerjes, doce años, ni yo ni mis hermanos hemos comido del pan del gobernador.

15 Pero los gobernadores anteriores que me precedieron gravaban al pueblo y tomaban de ellos cuarenta siclos de plata además del pan y del vino; también sus sirvientes oprimían al pueblo. Pero yo no hice así, a causa del temor de Dios.

16 También yo me dediqué a la obra en esta muralla, y no compramos terrenos, y todos mis siervos estaban reunidos allí para la obra.

17 Y había a mi mesa ciento cincuenta judíos y oficiales, sin contar los que vinieron a nosotros de las naciones que nos rodeaban.

18 Lo que se preparaba para cada día era un buey y seis ovejas escogidas, también eran preparadas aves para mí; cada diez días toda clase de vino se proveía en abundancia. Y con todo esto, no reclamé el pan del gobernador, porque era pesada la servidumbre sobre este pueblo.

19 Acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, para bien, conforme a todo lo que he hecho por este pueblo.

The Message Bible MSG

1 A great protest was mounted by the people, including the wives, against their fellow Jews.

2 Some said, "We have big families, and we need food just to survive."

3 Others said, "We're having to mortgage our fields and vineyards and homes to get enough grain to keep from starving."

4 And others said, "We're having to borrow money to pay the royal tax on our fields and vineyards.

5 Look: We're the same flesh and blood as our brothers here; our children are just as good as theirs. Yet here we are having to sell our children off as slaves - some of our daughters have already been sold - and we can't do anything about it because our fields and vineyards are owned by somebody else."

6 I got really angry when I heard their protest and complaints.

7 After thinking it over, I called the nobles and officials on the carpet. I said, "Each one of you is gouging his brother."

8 I told them, "We did everything we could to buy back our Jewish brothers who had to sell themselves as slaves to foreigners. And now you're selling these same brothers back into debt slavery! Does that mean that we have to buy them back again?" They said nothing. What could they say?

9 "What you're doing is wrong. Is there no fear of God left in you? Don't you care what the nations around here, our enemies, think of you?

10 "I and my brothers and the people working for me have also loaned them money. But this gouging them with interest has to stop.

11 Give them back their foreclosed fields, vineyards, olive groves, and homes right now. And forgive your claims on their money, grain, new wine, and olive oil."

12 They said, "We'll give it all back. We won't make any more demands on them. We'll do everything you say."

13 Then I emptied my pockets, turning them inside out, and said, "So may God empty the pockets and house of everyone who doesn't keep this promise - turned inside out and emptied." Everyone gave a wholehearted "Yes, we'll do it!" and praised God. And the people did what they promised. "Remember in My Favor, O My God"

14 From the time King Artaxerxes appointed me as their governor in the land of Judah - from the twentieth to the thirty-second year of his reign, twelve years - neither I nor my brothers used the governor's food allowance.

15 Governors who had preceded me had oppressed the people by taxing them forty shekels of silver (about a pound) a day for food and wine while their underlings bullied the people unmercifully. But out of fear of God I did none of that.

16 I had work to do; I worked on this wall. All my men were on the job to do the work. We didn't have time to line our own pockets.

17 I fed one hundred and fifty Jews and officials at my table in addition to those who showed up from the surrounding nations.

18 One ox, six choice sheep, and some chickens were prepared for me daily, and every ten days a large supply of wine was delivered. Even so, I didn't use the food allowance provided for the governor - the people had it hard enough as it was.

19 Remember in my favor, O my God, Everything I've done for these people.
