1 Y aconteció que cuando se les informó a Sanbalat, a Tobías, a Gesem el árabe y a los demás enemigos nuestros que yo había reedificado la muralla y que no quedaba ninguna brecha en ella, aunque en aquel tiempo yo no había asentado todavía las hojas en las puertas,

2 Sanbalat y Gesem me enviaron un mensaje, diciendo: Ven, reunámonos en Quefirim en el llano de Ono. Pero ellos tramaban hacerme daño.

3 Y les envié mensajeros, diciendo: Yo estoy haciendo una gran obra y no puedo descender. ¿Por qué ha de detenerse la obra mientras la dejo y desciendo a vosotros?

4 Y cuatro veces me enviaron mensajes en la misma forma, y yo les respondí de la misma manera.

5 Entonces Sanbalat me envió su siervo en la misma forma por quinta vez, con una carta abierta en su mano.

6 En ella estaba escrito: Se ha oído entre las naciones, y Gasmu dice, que tú y los judíos estáis tramando rebelaros; por eso reedificas la muralla. Y según estos informes tú vas a ser su rey.

7 También has puesto profetas para anunciar en Jerusalén en cuanto a ti: "Un rey está en Judá." Y ahora llegarán a oídos del rey estos informes. Ahora pues, ven, consultemos juntos.

8 Entonces le envié un mensaje, diciendo: No han sucedido esas cosas que tú dices, sino que las estás inventando en tu corazón.

9 Porque todos ellos querían amedrentarnos, pensando: Ellos se desanimarán con la obra y no será hecha. Pero ahora, oh Dios, fortalece mis manos.

10 Cuando entré yo en casa de Semaías, hijo de Delaía, hijo de Mehetabel, que estaba encerrado allí, él dijo: Reunámonos en la casa de Dios, dentro del templo, y cerremos las puertas del templo, porque vienen a matarte, vienen de noche a matarte.

11 Pero yo dije: ¿Huir un hombre como yo? ¿Y quién que sea como yo entraría al templo para salvar su vida? No entraré.

12 Entonces me di cuenta de que ciertamente Dios no lo había enviado, sino que había dicho su profecía contra mí porque Tobías y Sanbalat le habían pagado.

13 Le pagaron por esta razón, para que yo me atemorizara y obrara de esa manera y pecara, y ellos tuvieran un mal informe de mí y pudieran reprocharme.

14 Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanbalat conforme a estas obras suyas, también de la profetisa Noadías y de los demás profetas que estaban atemorizándome.

15 La muralla fue terminada el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días.

16 Y aconteció que cuando se enteraron todos nuestros enemigos y lo vieron todas las naciones que estaban alrededor nuestro, desfalleció su ánimo; porque reconocieron que esta obra había sido hecha con la ayuda de nuestro Dios.

17 También en aquellos días iban muchas cartas de los nobles de Judá a Tobías, y de Tobías venían cartas a ellos.

18 Porque muchos en Judá estaban unidos a él bajo juramento porque él era yerno de Secanías, hijo de Ara, y su hijo Johanán se había casado con la hija de Mesulam, hijo de Berequías.

19 Además, hablaban de sus buenas obras en mi presencia y a él le informaban de mis palabras. Y Tobías me enviaba cartas para atemorizarme.

1 When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and that there were no more breaks in it - even though I hadn't yet installed the gates

2 - Sanballat and Geshem sent this message: "Come and meet with us at Kephirim in the valley of Ono."

3 so I sent messengers back with this: "I'm doing a great work; I can't come down. Why should the work come to a standstill just so I can come down to see you?"

4 Four times they sent this message and four times I gave them my answer.

5 The fifth time - same messenger, same message - Sanballat sent an unsealed letter

6 with this message:

7 and that you have appointed prophets to announce in Jerusalem, 'There's a king in Judah!' The king is going to be told all this - don't you think we should sit down and have a talk?"

8 I sent him back this: "There's nothing to what you're saying. You've made it all up."

9 They were trying to intimidate us into quitting. They thought, "They'll give up; they'll never finish it." I prayed, "Give me strength."

10 Then I met secretly with Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, at his house. He said: Let's meet at the house of God, inside The Temple; Let's find safety behind locked doors because they're coming to kill you, Yes, coming by night to kill you.

11 I said, "Why would a man like me run for cover? And why would a man like me use The Temple as a hideout? I won't do it."

12 I sensed that God hadn't sent this man. The so-called prophecy he spoke to me was the work of Tobiah and Sanballat; they had hired him.

13 He had been hired to scare me off - trick me - a layman, into desecrating The Temple and ruining my good reputation so they could accuse me.

14 "O my God, don't let Tobiah and Sanballat get by with all the mischief they've done. And the same goes for the prophetess Noadiah and the other prophets who have been trying to undermine my confidence."

15 The wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul. It had taken fifty-two days.

16 When all our enemies heard the news and all the surrounding nations saw it, our enemies totally lost their nerve. They knew that God was behind this work.

17 All during this time letters were going back and forth constantly between the nobles of Judah and Tobiah.

18 Many of the nobles had ties to him because he was son-in-law to Shecaniah son of Arah and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah.

19 They kept telling me all the good things he did and then would report back to him anything I would say. And then Tobiah would send letters to intimidate me.
