GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 ADONAI spoke to Moshe in the Sinai Desert, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month of the second year after they had left the land of Egypt. He said,
1
The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Desert of Sinai. It was the first day of the second month in the second year after leaving Egypt. He said,
2 "Take a census of the entire assembly of the people of Isra'el, by clans and families. Record the names of all the men
2
"Take a census of the whole community of Israel by families and households. List every man by name
3 twenty years old and over who are subject to military service in Isra'el. You and Aharon are to enumerate them company by company.
3
who is at least 20 years old. You and Aaron must register everyone in Israel who is eligible for military duty. List them by divisions.
4 Take with you from each tribe someone who is head of a clan.
4
One man from each tribe will help you. Each of these men must be the head of a household.
5 These are the men to take with you: From Re'uven, Elitzur the son of Sh'de'ur;
5
"Here are the names of the men who will help you: Elizur, son of Shedeur, from the tribe of Reuben;
6 From Shim'on, Shlumi'el the son of Tzurishaddai;
6
Shelumiel, son of Zurishaddai, from the tribe of Simeon;
7 From Y'hudah, Nachshon the son of 'Amminadav;
7
Nahshon, son of Amminadab, from the tribe of Judah;
8 From Yissakhar, N'tan'el the son of Tzu'ar;
8
Nethanel, son of Zuar, from the tribe of Issachar;
9 From Z'vulun, Eli'av the son of Helon.
9
Eliab, son of Helon, from the tribe of Zebulun;
10 Of the children of Yosef: From Efrayim, Elishama the son of 'Ammihud; From M'nasheh, Gamli'el the son of P'dahtzur.
10
Elishama, son of Ammihud, from the tribe of Ephraim; Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur, from the tribe of Manasseh; (Ephraim and Manasseh are Joseph's descendants.)
11 From Binyamin, Avidan the son of Gid'oni;
11
Abidan, son of Gideoni, from the tribe of Benjamin;
12 From Dan, Achi'ezer the son of 'Ammishaddai;
12
Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai, from the tribe of Dan;
13 From Asher, Pag'i'el the son of 'Okhran;
13
Pagiel, son of Ochran, from the tribe of Asher;
14 From Gad, Elyasaf the son of De'u'el;
14
Eliasaph, son of Deuel, from the tribe of Gad;
15 From Naftali, Achira the son of 'Enan."
15
Ahira, son of Enan, from the tribe of Naphtali."
16 These were the ones called from the assembly, the chiefs of their fathers'clans and heads of thousands in Isra'el.
16
These were the men chosen from the community, the leaders of their ancestors' tribes, and heads of the divisions of Israel.
17 So Moshe and Aharon took these men who had been designated by name;
17
Moses and Aaron took the men who had been named
18 and, on the first day of the second month, they gathered the whole assembly to state their genealogies by families and clans and recorded the names of all those twenty years old and over, as well as their total numbers.
18
and assembled the whole community on the first day of the second month. Each man at least 20 years old provided his genealogy by family and household. Then his name was listed.
19 Moshe counted them in the Sinai Desert, just as ADONAI had ordered him.
19
So Moses registered the men of Israel in the Desert of Sinai as the LORD had commanded him.

44 Moshe, Aharon and the twelve leaders of Isra'el, each from a clan,
44
Moses, Aaron, and the 12 leaders of Israel, each representing his own family, added up these totals.
45 counted the people of Isra'el by their clans, those twenty years old and over, eligible for military service in Isra'el;
45
So the Israelites were registered by households. The grand total of men who were at least 20 years old and eligible for military duty
46 and the grand total came to 603,550.
46
was 603,550.
47 But those who were L'vi'im, according to the clan of their fathers, were not counted in this census;
47
But the households from the tribe of Levi were not registered along with the other Israelites.
48 because ADONAI had told Moshe,
48
The LORD had said to Moses,
49 "Do not include the clan of Levi when you take the census of the people of Isra'el.
49
"Don't register the tribe of Levi or include them in the census with the other Israelites.
50 Instead, give the L'vi'im charge over the tabernacle of the testimony, its equipment and everything else connected with it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its equipment, serve in it and set up their camp around it.
50
Put the Levites in charge of the tent of God's words, including the equipment for the tent and everything else having to do with the tent. The Levites will carry the tent and all its equipment. They will take care of the tent and camp around it.
51 When the tabernacle is to be moved onward, it is the L'vi'im who are to take it down and set it up in the new location; anyone else who involves himself is to be put to death.
51
When the tent has to be moved, the Levites will take it down. When we camp, they will set it up. Anyone else who comes near the tent will be put to death.
52 The rest of Isra'el are to set up camp, company by company, each man with his own banner.
52
"The other Israelites will camp with each family in its own area under its own flag.
53 But the L'vi'im are to camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that no anger will come upon the assembly of the people of Isra'el. The L'vi'im are to be in charge of the tabernacle of the testimony."
53
The Levites will camp all around the tent of God's words. In this way [the LORD] won't be angry with the community of Israel. So the Levites will be in charge of the tent of God's words."
54 This is what the people of Isra'el did - they did everything that ADONAI had ordered Moshe.
54
The Israelites did everything as the LORD commanded Moses.
