CJB

NLT

1 ADONAI said to Moshe,
1 Now the LORD said to Moses,
2 "Make two trumpets; make them of hammered silver. Use them for summoning the community and for sounding the call to break camp and move on.
2 “Make two trumpets of hammered silver for calling the community to assemble and for signaling the breaking of camp.
3 When they are sounded, the entire community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
3 When both trumpets are blown, everyone must gather before you at the entrance of the Tabernacle.
4 If only one is sounded, then just the leaders, the heads of the clans of Isra'el, are to assemble before you.
4 But if only one trumpet is blown, then only the leaders—the heads of the clans of Israel—must present themselves to you.
5 "When you sound an alarm, the camps to the east will commence traveling.
5 “When you sound the signal to move on, the tribes camped on the east side of the Tabernacle must break camp and move forward.
6 When you sound a second alarm, the camps to the south will set out; they will sound alarms to announce when to travel.
6 When you sound the signal a second time, the tribes camped on the south will follow. You must sound short blasts as the signal for moving on.
7 However, when the community is to be assembled, you are to sound; but don't sound an alarm.
7 But when you call the people to an assembly, blow the trumpets with a different signal.
8 It will be the sons of Aharon, the cohanim, who are to sound the trumpets; this will be a permanent regulation for you through all your generations.
8 Only the priests, Aaron’s descendants, are allowed to blow the trumpets. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation.
9 "When you go to war in your land against an adversary who is oppressing you, you are to sound an alarm with the trumpets; then you will be remembered before ADONAI your God, and you will be saved from your enemies.
9 “When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Then the LORD your God will remember you and rescue you from your enemies.
10 "Also on your days of rejoicing, at your designated times and on Rosh-Hodesh, you are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; these will be your reminder before your God. I am ADONAI your God."
10 Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind your God of his covenant with you. I am the LORD your God.”
11 On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle of the testimony;
11 In the second year after Israel’s departure from Egypt—on the twentieth day of the second month —the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle of the Covenant.
12 and the people of Isra'el moved out in stages from the Sinai Desert. The cloud stopped in the Pa'ran Desert.
12 So the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai and traveled on from place to place until the cloud stopped in the wilderness of Paran.
13 So they set out on their first journey, in keeping with ADONAI's order through Moshe.
13 When the people set out for the first time, following the instructions the LORD had given through Moses,
14 In the lead was the banner of the camp of the descendants of Y'hudah, whose companies moved forward; over his company was Nachshon the son of 'Amminadav.
14 Judah’s troops led the way. They marched behind their banner, and their leader was Nahshon son of Amminadab.
15 Over the company of the tribe of the descendants of Yissakhar was N'tan'el the son of Tzu'ar.
15 They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Issachar, led by Nethanel son of Zuar,
16 Over the company of the descendants of Z'vulun was Eli'av the son of Helon.
16 and the troops of the tribe of Zebulun, led by Eliab son of Helon.
17 Then the tabernacle was taken down; and the descendants of Gershon and the descendants of M'rari set out, carrying the tabernacle.
17 Then the Tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonite and Merarite divisions of the Levites were next in the line of march, carrying the Tabernacle with them.
18 Next, the banner of the camp of Re'uven moved forward by companies; over his company was Elitzur the son of Sh'de'ur.
18 Reuben’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elizur son of Shedeur.
19 Over the company of the tribe of the descendants of Shim'on was Shlumi'el the son of Tzurishaddai.
19 They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Simeon, led by Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai,
20 Over the company of the descendants of Gad was Elyasaf the son of De'u'el.
20 and the troops of the tribe of Gad, led by Eliasaph son of Deuel.
21 Then the descendants of K'hat set out, carrying the sanctuary, so that [at the next camp] the tabernacle could be set up before they arrived.
21 Next came the Kohathite division of the Levites, carrying the sacred objects from the Tabernacle. Before they arrived at the next camp, the Tabernacle would already be set up at its new location.
22 The banner of the camp of the descendants of Efrayim moved forward by companies; over his company was Elishama the son of 'Ammihud.
22 Ephraim’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elishama son of Ammihud.
23 Over the company of the tribe of the descendants of M'nasheh was Gamli'el the son of P'dahtzur.
23 They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Manasseh, led by Gamaliel son of Pedahzur,
24 Over the company of the descendants of Binyamin was Avidan the son of Gid'oni.
24 and the troops of the tribe of Benjamin, led by Abidan son of Gideoni.
25 The banner of the camp of the descendants of Dan, forming the rearguard for all the camps, moved forward by companies; over his company was Achi'ezer the son of 'Ammishaddai.
25 Dan’s troops went last, marching behind their banner and serving as the rear guard for all the tribal camps. Their leader was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
26 Over the company of the tribe of the descendants of Asher was Pag'i'el the son of 'Okhran.
26 They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Asher, led by Pagiel son of Ocran,
27 Over the company of the descendants of Naftali was Achira the son of 'Enan.
27 and the troops of the tribe of Naphtali, led by Ahira son of Enan.
28 This is how the people of Isra'el traveled by companies; thus they moved forward.
28 This was the order in which the Israelites marched, division by division.
29 Moshe said to Hovav the son of Re'u'el the Midyani, Moshe's father-in-law, "We are traveling to the place about which ADONAI said, 'I will give it to you.'Come with us, and we will treat you well, because ADONAI has promised good things to Isra'el."
29 One day Moses said to his brother-in-law, Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, “We are on our way to the place the LORD promised us, for he said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised wonderful blessings for Israel!”
30 But he replied, "I will not go; I would rather go back to my own country and my own kinsmen."
30 But Hobab replied, “No, I will not go. I must return to my own land and family.”
31 Moshe continued, "Please don't leave us, because you know that we have to camp in the desert, and you can serve as our eyes.
31 “Please don’t leave us,” Moses pleaded. “You know the places in the wilderness where we should camp. Come, be our guide.
32 If you do go with us, then whatever good ADONAI does for us, we will do the same for you."
32 If you do, we’ll share with you all the blessings the LORD gives us.”
33 So they set out from ADONAI's mountain and traveled for three days. Ahead of them on this three-day journey went the ark of ADONAI's covenant, searching for a new place to stop.
33 They marched for three days after leaving the mountain of the LORD, with the Ark of the LORD ’s Covenant moving ahead of them to show them where to stop and rest.
34 The cloud of ADONAI was over them during the day as they set out from the camp.
34 As they moved on each day, the cloud of the LORD hovered over them.
35 When the ark moved forward, Moshe said, "Arise, ADONAI! May your enemies be scattered! Let those who hate you flee before you!"
35 And whenever the Ark set out, Moses would shout, “Arise, O LORD, and let your enemies be scattered! Let them flee before you!”
36 When it stopped, he said, "Return, ADONAI of the many, many thousands of Isra'el!"
36 And when the Ark was set down, he would say, “Return, O LORD, to the countless thousands of Israel!”
