Numbers 17

GNT 1 The Lord said to Moses, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, GNT 2 "Tell the people of Israel to give you twelve walking sticks, one from the leader of each tribe. Write each man's name on his stick NIV 2 “Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff. GNT 3 and then write Aaron's name on the stick representing Levi. There will be one stick for each tribal leader. NIV 3 On the staff of Levi write Aaron’s name, for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe. GNT 4 Take them to the Tent of my presence and put them in front of the Covenant Box, where I meet you. NIV 4 Place them in the tent of meeting in front of the ark of the covenant law, where I meet with you. GNT 5 Then the stick of the man I have chosen will sprout. In this way I will put a stop to the constant complaining of these Israelites against you." NIV 5 The staff belonging to the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling against you by the Israelites.” GNT 6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a stick, one for each tribe, twelve in all, and Aaron's stick was put with them. NIV 6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron’s staff was among them. GNT 7 Moses then put all the sticks in the Tent in front of the Lord's Covenant Box. NIV 7 Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the tent of the covenant law. GNT 8 The next day, when Moses went into the Tent, he saw that Aaron's stick, representing the tribe of Levi, had sprouted. It had budded, blossomed, and produced ripe almonds! NIV 8 The next day Moses entered the tent and saw that Aaron’s staff, which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds. GNT 9 Moses took all the sticks and showed them to the Israelites. They saw what had happened, and each leader took his own stick back. NIV 9 Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the LORD’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff. GNT 10 The Lord said to Moses, "Put Aaron's stick back in front of the Covenant Box. It is to be kept as a warning to the rebel Israelites that they will die unless their complaining stops." NIV 10 The LORD said to Moses, “Put back Aaron’s staff in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.” GNT 11 Moses did as the Lord commanded. NIV 11 Moses did just as the LORD commanded him. GNT 12 The people of Israel said to Moses, "Then that's the end of us! NIV 12 The Israelites said to Moses, “We will die! We are lost, we are all lost! GNT 13 If anyone who even comes near the Tent must die, then we are all as good as dead!" NIV 13 Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the LORD will die. Are we all going to die?”
