GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 When Bil'am saw that it pleased ADONAI to bless Isra'el, he didn't go, as at the other times, to make use of divination, but looked out toward the desert.
1
When Balaam saw that the LORD wanted to bless Israel, he didn't look for omens as he had done before. He turned toward the desert,
2 Bil'am raised his eyes and saw Isra'el encamped tribe by tribe. Then the Spirit of God came upon him,
2
looked up, and saw Israel's camp grouped by tribes. The Spirit of God entered him,
3 and he made his pronouncement: "This is the speech of Bil'am, son of B'or; the speech of the man whose eyes have been opened;
3
and he delivered this message: "This is the message of Balaam, son of Beor. This is the message of the man whose eyesight is clear.
4 the speech of him who hears God's words; who sees what Shaddai sees, who has fallen, yet has open eyes:
4
This is the message of the one who hears the words of God, has a vision from the Almighty, and falls [into a trance] with his eyes open:
5 "How lovely are your tents, Ya'akov; your encampments, Isra'el!
5
How beautiful are your tents, Jacob, and the places where you live, Israel.
6 They spread out like valleys, like gardens by the riverside, like succulent aloes planted by ADONAI, like cedar trees next to the water.
6
Your tents spread out like rivers, like gardens by a river, like aloes planted by the LORD, like cedars by the water.
7 "Water will flow from their branches, their seed will have water aplenty. Their king will be higher than Agag and his kingdom lifted high.
7
Water will flow from their buckets, and their crops will have plenty of water. Their king will be greater than Agag, and their kingdom will be considered the best.
8 God, who brought them out of Egypt, gives them the strength of a wild ox. They will devour the nations opposing them, break their bones, pierce them with their arrows.
8
The God who brought them out of Egypt has the strength of a wild bull. He will devour nations that are his enemies, crush their bones, and pierce them with arrows.
9 "When they lie down they crouch like a lion, or like a lioness - who dares to rouse it? Blessed be all who bless you! Cursed be all who curse you!"
9
His people lie down [and] rest like a lion. They are like a lioness. Who dares to disturb them? Those who bless you will be blessed! Those who curse you will be cursed!"
10 Balak blazed with fury against Bil'am. He struck his hands together and said to Bil'am, "I summoned you to curse my enemies. But here, you have done nothing but bless them - three times already!
10
Balak became angry with Balaam. He clapped his hands and said, "I summoned you to curse my enemies, and now you have blessed them three times.
11 Now you had better escape to your own place! I had planned to reward you very well, but now ADONAI has deprived you of payment."
11
Get out of here! Go home! I said I'd reward you richly, but the LORD has made you lose your reward."
12 Bil'am answered Balak, "Didn't I tell the messengers you sent me
12
Balaam answered Balak, "I told the messengers you sent me,
13 that even if Balak would give me his palace full of silver and gold, I could not of my own accord go beyond the word of ADONAI to do either good or bad? that what ADONAI said is what I would say?
13
'Even if Balak would give me his palace filled with silver and gold, I couldn't disobey the LORD's command no matter how good or bad the request might seem to me. I must say only what the LORD says.'
14 But now that I am going back to my own people, come, I will warn you what this people will do to your people in the acharit-hayamim.
14
Even though I'm going back to my people, I'll give you some advice. I'll tell you what these people will do to your people in the days to come."
15 So he made his pronouncement: "This is the speech of Bil'am, son of B'or; the speech of the man whose eyes have been opened;
15
Then Balaam delivered this message: "This is the message of Balaam, son of Beor. This is the message of the man whose eyesight is clear.
16 the speech of him who hears God's words; who knows what 'Elyon knows, who sees what Shaddai sees, who has fallen, yet has open eyes:
16
This is the message of the one who hears the words of God, receives knowledge from the Most High, has a vision from the Almighty, and falls [into a trance] with his eyes open:
17 "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not soon -a star will step forth from Ya'akov, a scepter will arise from Isra'el, to crush the corners of Mo'av and destroy all descendants of Shet.
17
I see someone who is not here now. I look at someone who is not nearby. A star will come from Jacob. A scepter will rise from Israel. He will crush the heads of the Moabites and destroy all the people of Sheth.
18 His enemies will be his possessions -Edom and Se'ir, possessions. Isra'el will do valiantly,
18
Edom will be conquered, and Seir, his enemy, will be conquered. So Israel will become wealthy.
19 From Ya'akov will come someone who will rule, and he will destroy what is left of the city."
19
He will rule from Jacob and destroy whoever is left in their cities."
20 He saw 'Amalek and made this pronouncement: "First among nations was 'Amalek, but destruction will be its end."
20
Then Balaam saw the Amalekites and delivered this message: "Amalek was first among the nations, but in the end it will be destroyed."
21 He saw the Keini and made this pronouncement: "Though your dwelling is firm, your nest set on rock,
21
Then he saw the Kenites and delivered this message: "You have a permanent place to live. Your nest is built in a rock.
22 Kayin will be wasted while captive to Ashur."
22
But it is destined to be burned, you [descendants of] Cain, when Assyria takes you as prisoners of war."
23 Finally, he made this pronouncement: "Oh no! Who can live when God does this?
23
He delivered this message: "Oh no! Who will live when God decides to do this?
24 But ships will come from the coast of Kittim to subdue Ashur and subdue 'Ever, but they too will come to destruction."
24
Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus. They will conquer Assyria and Eber. But they, too, will be totally destroyed."
25 Then Bil'am got up, left and returned to his home; and Balak too went his way.
25
Then Balaam got up and went back home, and Balak also went on his way.
