GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 Isra'el stayed at Sheetim, and there the people began whoring with the women of Mo'av.
1
While Israel was staying at Shittim, the men began to have sex with Moabite women
2 These women invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, where the people ate and bowed down to their gods.
2
who invited the people to the sacrifices offered to their gods. The people ate the meat from the sacrifices and worshiped these gods.
3 With Isra'el thus joined to Ba'al-P'or, the anger of ADONAI blazed up against Isra'el.
3
Since the Israelites joined in worshiping the god Baal of Peor, the LORD became angry with Israel.
4 ADONAI said to Moshe, "Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them facing the sun before ADONAI, so that the raging fury of ADONAI will turn away from Isra'el."
4
The LORD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people, and execute them in broad daylight in the LORD's presence. This will turn the LORD's anger away from Israel."
5 Moshe said to the judges of Isra'el, "Each of you is to put to death those in his tribe who have joined themselves to Ba'al-P'or."
5
So Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you must kill the men who have joined in worshiping the god Baal of Peor."
6 Just then, in the sight of Moshe and the whole community of Isra'el, as they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting, a man from Isra'el came by, bringing to his family a woman from Midyan.
6
One of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman to his brothers. He did this right in front of Moses and the whole community of Israel while they were crying at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
7 When Pinchas the son of El'azar, the son of Aharon the cohen, saw it, he got up from the middle of the crowd, took a spear in his hand,
7
Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of the priest Aaron, saw this. So he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand,
8 and pursued the man from Isra'el right into the inner part of the tent, where he thrust his spear through both of them -the man from Isra'el and the woman through her stomach. Thus was the plague among the people of Isra'el stopped;
8
and went into the tent after the Israelite man. He drove the spear through the man and into the woman's body. Because of this, the plague that the Israelites were experiencing stopped.
9 nevertheless, 24,000 died in the plague.
9
However, 24,000 people died from that plague.
10 ADONAI said to Moshe,
10
Then the LORD said to Moses,
11 "Pinchas the son of El'azar, the son of Aharon the cohen, has deflected my anger from the people of Isra'el by being as zealous as I am, so that I didn't destroy them in my own zeal.
11
"Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of the priest Aaron, turned my fury away from the Israelites. Since he stood up for me, I didn't have to stand up for myself and destroy them.
12 Therefore say, 'I am giving him my covenant of shalom,
12
So tell Phinehas that I'm making a promise of peace to him.
13 making a covenant with him and his descendants after him that the office of cohen will be theirs forever.'This is because he was zealous on behalf of his God and made atonement for the people of Isra'el."
13
My promise is that he and his descendants will be priests permanently because he stood up for his God and he made peace with the LORD for the Israelites."
14 The name of the man from Isra'el who was killed, put to death with the woman from Midyan, was Zimri the son of Salu, leader of one of the clans from the tribe of Shim'on.
14
The name of the Israelite man who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri, son of Salu. (Salu was the leader of a family from Simeon.)
15 The name of the woman from Midyan who was killed was Kozbi the daughter of Tzur, and he was head of the people in one of the clans of Midyan.
15
The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi, daughter of Zur. (Zur was the head of a family from the Midianite tribes.)
16 ADONAI said to Moshe,
16
The LORD said to Moses,
17 "Treat the Midyanim as enemies and attack them;
17
"Treat the Midianites as your enemies, and kill them
18 because they are treating you as enemies by the trickery they used to deceive you in the P'or incident and in the affair of their sister Kozbi, the daughter of the leader from Midyan, the woman who was killed on the day of the plague in the P'or incident."
18
because they treated you as enemies. They plotted to trick you in the incident that took place at Peor. They used their sister Cozbi, daughter of a Midianite leader, who was killed on the day of the plague caused by the incident at Peor."
