New Century Version NCV
The Complete Jewish Bible CJB
1 While the people of Israel were still camped at Acacia, the men began sinning sexually with Moabite women.
1
Isra'el stayed at Sheetim, and there the people began whoring with the women of Mo'av.
2 The women invited them to their sacrifices to their gods, and the Israelites ate food there and worshiped these gods.
2
These women invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, where the people ate and bowed down to their gods.
3 So the Israelites began to worship Baal of Peor, and the Lord was very angry with them.
3
With Isra'el thus joined to Ba'al-P'or, the anger of ADONAI blazed up against Isra'el.
4 The Lord said to Moses, "Get all the leaders of the people and kill them in open daylight in the presence of the Lord. Then the Lord will not be angry with the people of Israel."
4
ADONAI said to Moshe, "Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them facing the sun before ADONAI, so that the raging fury of ADONAI will turn away from Isra'el."
5 So Moses said to Israel's judges, "Each of you must put to death your people who have become worshipers of Baal of Peor."
5
Moshe said to the judges of Isra'el, "Each of you is to put to death those in his tribe who have joined themselves to Ba'al-P'or."
6 Moses and the Israelites were gathered at the entrance to the Meeting Tent, crying there. Then an Israelite man brought a Midianite woman to his brothers in plain sight of Moses and all the people.
6
Just then, in the sight of Moshe and the whole community of Isra'el, as they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting, a man from Isra'el came by, bringing to his family a woman from Midyan.
7 Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, so he left the meeting and got his spear.
7
When Pinchas the son of El'azar, the son of Aharon the cohen, saw it, he got up from the middle of the crowd, took a spear in his hand,
8 He followed the Israelite into his tent and drove his spear through both the Israelite man and the Midianite wo-man. Then the terrible sickness among the Israelites stopped.
8
and pursued the man from Isra'el right into the inner part of the tent, where he thrust his spear through both of them -the man from Isra'el and the woman through her stomach. Thus was the plague among the people of Isra'el stopped;
9 This sickness had killed twenty-four thousand people.
9
nevertheless, 24,000 died in the plague.
10 The Lord said to Moses,
10
ADONAI said to Moshe,
11 "Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has saved the Israelites from my anger. He hates sin as much as I do. Since he tried to save my honor among them, I will not kill them.
11
"Pinchas the son of El'azar, the son of Aharon the cohen, has deflected my anger from the people of Isra'el by being as zealous as I am, so that I didn't destroy them in my own zeal.
12 So tell Phinehas that I am making my peace agreement with him.
12
Therefore say, 'I am giving him my covenant of shalom,
13 He and his descendants will always be priests, because he had great concern for the honor of his God. He removed the sins of the Israelites so they would belong to God."
13
making a covenant with him and his descendants after him that the office of cohen will be theirs forever.'This is because he was zealous on behalf of his God and made atonement for the people of Isra'el."
14 The Israelite man who was killed with the Midianite woman was named Zimri son of Salu. He was the leader of a family in the tribe of Simeon.
14
The name of the man from Isra'el who was killed, put to death with the woman from Midyan, was Zimri the son of Salu, leader of one of the clans from the tribe of Shim'on.
15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Cozbi daughter of Zur, who was the chief of a Midianite family.
15
The name of the woman from Midyan who was killed was Kozbi the daughter of Tzur, and he was head of the people in one of the clans of Midyan.
16 The Lord said to Moses,
16
ADONAI said to Moshe,
17 "The Midianites are your enemies, and you should kill them.
17
"Treat the Midyanim as enemies and attack them;
18 They have already made you their enemies, because they tricked you at Peor and because of their sister Cozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader. She was the woman who was killed when the sickness came because the people sinned at Peor."
18
because they are treating you as enemies by the trickery they used to deceive you in the P'or incident and in the affair of their sister Kozbi, the daughter of the leader from Midyan, the woman who was killed on the day of the plague in the P'or incident."
