RHE 1 And Israel at that time abode in Settim, and the people committed fornication with the daughters of Moab, NIV 1 While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, RHE 2 Who called them to their sacrifices. And they ate of them, and adored their gods. NIV 2 who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. RHE 3 And Israel was initiated to Beelphegor: upon which the Lord being angry, NIV 3 So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the LORD’s anger burned against them. RHE 4 Said to Moses: Take all the princes of the people, and hang them up on gibbets against the sun: that my fury may be turned away from Israel. NIV 4 The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the LORD’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.” RHE 5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel: Let every man kill his neighbours, that have been initiated to Beelphegor. NIV 5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.” RHE 6 And behold one of the children of Israel went in before his brethren to a harlot of Madian, in the sight of Moses and of all the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle. NIV 6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. RHE 7 And when Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest saw it, he rose up from the midst of the multitude, and taking a dagger, NIV 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand RHE 8 Went in after the Israelite into the brothel house, and thrust both of them through together, to wit, the man and the woman in the genital parts. And the scourge ceased from the children of Israel. NIV 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; RHE 9 And there were slain four and twenty thousand men. NIV 9 but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000. RHE 10 And the Lord said to Moses: NIV 10 The LORD said to Moses, RHE 11 Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned away my wrath from the children of Israel: because he was moved with my zeal against them, that I myself might not destroy the children of Israel in my zeal. NIV 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. RHE 12 Therefore say to him: behold I give him the peace of my covenant, NIV 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. RHE 13 And the covenant of the priesthood for ever shall be both to him and his seed, because he hath been zealous for his God, and hath made atonement for the wickedness of the children of Israel. NIV 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.” RHE 14 And the name of the Israelite, that was slain with the woman of Madian, was Zambri the son of Salu, a prince of the kindred and tribe of Simeon. NIV 14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family. RHE 15 And the Madianite woman, that was slain with him, was called Cozbi the daughter of Sur, a most noble prince among the Madianites. NIV 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family. RHE 16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: NIV 16 The LORD said to Moses, RHE 17 Let the Madianites find you their enemies, and slay you them: NIV 17 “Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. RHE 18 Because they also have acted like enemies against you, and have guilefully deceived you by the idol Phogor, and Cozbi their sister, a daughter of a prince of Madian, who was slain in the day of the plague for the sacrilege of Phogor. NIV 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”
