GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 ADONAI said to Moshe,
1
The LORD said to Moses,
2 "On behalf of the people of Isra'el, take vengeance on the Midyanim. After that, you will be gathered to your people."
2
"Get even with the Midianites for what they did to the Israelites. After that you will join your ancestors [in death]."
3 Moshe said to the people, "Equip men from among yourselves for war. They are to go and fight Midyan, in order to carry out ADONAI's vengeance on Midyan.
3
Moses said to the people, "Some of your men must get ready to go to war against the Midianites. The LORD will use them to get even with Midian.
4 You are to send to the war a thousand men from every one of Isra'el's tribes."
4
Send 1,000 men from each of the tribes of Israel."
5 So out of the thousands of people in Isra'el, a thousand armed men from each tribe, 12,000 altogether, were mustered for war.
5
So 1,000 men from each tribe were supplied from the divisions of Israel--12,000 men ready for war.
6 Moshe sent them, a thousand from each tribe, to the war; he sent them and Pinchas the son of El'azar the cohen to the war, with the holy utensils and the trumpets for sounding the alarm in his care.
6
Then Moses sent them off to war, 1,000 men from each tribe along with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar. Phinehas took with him the holy articles and the trumpets for the fanfare.
7 They fought against Midyan, as ADONAI had ordered Moshe, and killed every male.
7
They went to war against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man.
8 They killed the kings of Midyan along with the others who were slain - Evi, Rekem, Tzur, Hur and Reva, the five kings of Midyan. They also killed Bil'am the son of B'or with the sword.
8
Among those killed were the five kings of Midian--Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba. They also killed Balaam, son of Beor, in battle.
9 The people of Isra'el took captive the women of Midyan and their little ones, and they took as booty all their cattle, flocks and other goods.
9
The Israelites took the Midianite women and children as prisoners of war. They also took all their animals, their livestock, and their valuables as loot.
10 They set fire to all their cities in the areas where they lived and all their camps.
10
They burned all the cities where the Midianites lived and all their settlements.
11 They took all the booty, all the people and animals they had captured,
11
Then they took everything as loot, including all the people and animals,
12 and brought the captives, booty and spoil to Moshe, El'azar the cohen and the community of Isra'el in the camp on the plains of Mo'av by the Yarden across from Yericho.
12
and brought the prisoners of war, the loot, and everything to Moses, the priest Eleazar, and the community of Israel at the camp on the plains of Moab near the Jordan River across from Jericho.
13 Moshe, El'azar the cohen and all the community leaders went to meet them outside the camp.
13
Moses, the priest Eleazar, and all the leaders of the community went outside the camp to meet them.
14 But Moshe was angry with the army officers, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds coming in from the battlefield.
14
Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of the companies and battalions, who were returning from battle.
15 Moshe asked them, "You let the women live?
15
"Why did you let all the women live?" he asked them.
16 Why, these are the ones who - because of Bil'am's advice -caused the people of Isra'el to rebel, breaking faith with ADONAI in the P'or incident, so that the plague broke out among ADONAI's community!
16
"Remember, they were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to the LORD in the incident that took place at Peor. The LORD's community experienced a plague at that time.
17 Now kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has ever slept with a man.
17
So kill all the Midianite boys and every Midianite woman who has gone to bed with a man.
18 But the young girls who have never slept with a man, keep alive for yourselves.
18
But save for yourselves every girl who has never gone to bed with a man.
19 Pitch your tents outside the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed a person or touched the corpse of someone slain, purify yourselves on the third and seventh days, you and your captives.
19
"Everyone who killed a person or touched a dead body must stay outside the camp seven days. You and your prisoners of war must use the ritual water on the third and seventh days in order to take away your sin.
20 Also purify every garment, whether of skin or goat's hair, and everything made of wood."
20
Do the same for all the clothes and everything made of leather, goats' hair, or wood."
21 El'azar the cohen said to the soldiers who had gone to the front, "This is the regulation from the Torah which ADONAI has ordered Moshe.
21
Then the priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, "This is what the LORD's teachings told Moses to do:
22 Even though gold, silver, brass, iron, tin and lead
22
Any gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, or lead--
23 can all withstand fire, so that you are indeed to purify everything made of these materials by having them pass through fire; nevertheless they must also be purified with the water for purification. Everything that can't withstand fire you are to have go through the water.
23
anything that won't burn--must be put through fire in order to make it clean. Then it must also be put through the ritual water in order to take away its sin. Whatever might burn must [only] be put through the ritual water.
24 On the seventh day you are to wash your clothes, and you will be clean; after that you may enter the camp."
24
On the seventh day wash your clothes, and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp."
25 ADONAI said to Moshe,
25
The LORD said to Moses,
26 "Take all the booty, both people and animals, you, El'azar the cohen and the leaders of clans in the community;
26
"You, the priest Eleazar, and the heads of the families of the community need to count all the loot, including the people and animals you captured.
27 and divide the booty into two parts: half for the experienced soldiers who went out to battle, and half for the rest of the community.
27
Divide the loot between the soldiers who served in the war and the rest of the community.
28 From the portion of the soldiers who went out to battle, levy a tax for ADONAI consisting of one-five-hundredth of the persons, cattle, donkeys and sheep;
28
Collect a tax for the LORD. From the soldiers who served in the war collect one out of every 500 things. This includes people, cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats.
29 take it from their half and give it to El'azar the cohen as a portion set apart for ADONAI.
29
Collect all these things from the soldiers' half of the loot, and give them to the priest Eleazar as a contribution to the LORD.
30 From the half that goes to the people of Isra'el, you are to take one-fiftieth of the persons, and of the cattle, donkeys and sheep, that is, of all the livestock; and give them to the L'vi'im taking care of the tabernacle of ADONAI."
30
From the Israelites' half of the loot, collect one out of every 50 things. This includes people, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats, and every other kind of animal. Give them to the Levites who are in charge of the work done at the LORD's tent."
31 Moshe and El'azar the cohen did as ADONAI had ordered Moshe.
31
Moses and the priest Eleazar did as the LORD commanded Moses.
32 The booty, over and above the portion which the soldiers took, came to 675,000 sheep,
32
This is the loot that was left from everything that the troops took: 675,000 sheep and goats,
33 72,000 cattle,
33
72,000 cattle,
34 61,000 donkeys,
34
61,000 donkeys, and
35 and 32,000 persons in all, consisting of the women who had never slept with a man.
35
32,000 women who had never gone to bed with a man.
36 The half which was the portion of the soldiers who went out to fight, numbered 337,500 sheep,
36
Half of it went to the soldiers who served in the war. Of the 337,500 sheep and goats they received,
37 of which ADONAI's tribute was 675;
37
675 went to the LORD as taxes.
38 36,000 cattle, of which ADONAI's tribute was seventy-two;
38
Of the 36,000 cattle they received, 72 went to the LORD as taxes.
39 30,500 donkeys, of which ADONAI's tribute was sixty-one;
39
Of the 30,500 donkeys they received, 61 went to the LORD as taxes.
40 and 16,000 persons, of whom ADONAI's tribute was thirty-two persons.
40
Of the 16,000 people they received, 32 went to the LORD as taxes.
41 Moshe gave the tribute set apart for ADONAI to El'azar the cohen, as ADONAI had ordered Moshe.
41
Moses gave the LORD's taxes to the priest Eleazar, as the LORD had commanded him.
42 From the half that went to people of Isra'el, which Moshe separated from that of the men who had gone to fight -
42
Moses took the Israelites' half of the loot from the soldiers.
43 now the community's half consisted of 337,500 sheep,
43
The community received 337,500 sheep and goats,
44 36,000 cattle,
44
36,000 cattle,
45 30,500 donkeys
45
30,500 donkeys,
46 and 16,000 persons -
46
and 16,000 people.
47 from the people of Isra'el's half, Moshe took one-fiftieth of the persons and animals and gave them to the L'vi'im taking care of the tabernacle of ADONAI, as ADONAI had ordered Moshe.
47
From the Israelites' half Moses collected one out of every 50 things, including people and animals, as the LORD commanded him. Then he gave all this to the Levites who were in charge of the work done at the LORD's tent.
48 The officers in charge of the thousands who fought, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, approached Moshe
48
Then the officers from the military divisions, the commanders of the companies and battalions of men, came to Moses.
49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted all the soldiers under our command, and not one of us is missing.
49
They said to him, "Sir, we have counted all the soldiers under our command, and not one of them is missing.
50 We have brought an offering for ADONAI, what every man has obtained in the way of gold jewelry -armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and belts -to make atonement for ourselves before ADONAI."
50
So we have brought as gifts to the LORD the gold jewelry that each of us found--arm bands, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and pendants. We offer them to make peace with the LORD."
51 Moshe and El'azar the cohen accepted their gold, all the jewelry.
51
Moses and the priest Eleazar took all the hand-crafted gold articles from them.
52 All the gold in this gift which the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds set apart for ADONAI weighed 420 pounds.
52
All the gold contributed to the LORD by the commanders weighed about 420 pounds.
53 For the soldiers had taken booty, every man for himself.
53
Each soldier kept his own loot.
54 Moshe and El'azar the cohen took the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a reminder for the people of Isra'el before ADONAI.
54
Moses and the priest Eleazar took the gold from the commanders and brought it into the LORD's presence at the tent of meeting as a reminder to the Israelites.
