1 Or i figliuoli di Ruben e i figliuoli di Gad aveano del bestiame in grandissimo numero; e quando videro che il paese di Iazer e il paese di Galaad erano luoghi da bestiame,

2 i figliuoli di Gad e i figliuoli di Ruben vennero a parlare a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleazar e ai principi della raunanza, e dissero:

3 "Ataroth, Dibon, Iazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo e Beon,

4 terre che l’Eterno ha colpite dinanzi alla raunanza d’Israele, sono terre da bestiame, e i tuoi servi hanno del bestiame".

5 E dissero ancora: "Se abbiam trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, sia concesso ai tuoi servi il possesso di questo paese, e non ci far passare il Giordano".

6 Ma Mosè rispose ai figliuoli di Gad e ai figliuoli di Ruben: "Andrebbero eglino i vostri fratelli alla guerra e voi ve ne stareste qui?

7 E perché volete scoraggiare i figliuoli d’Israele dal passare nei paese che l’Eterno ha loro dato?

8 Così fecero i vostri padri, quando li mandai da Kades-Barnea per esplorare il paese.

9 Salirono fino alla valle d’Eshcol; e dopo aver esplorato il paese, scoraggiarono i figliuoli d’Israele dall’entrare nel paese che l’Eterno avea loro dato.

10 E l’ira dell’Eterno s’accese in quel giorno, ed egli giurò dicendo:

11 Gli uomini che son saliti dall’Egitto, dall’età di vent’anni in su non vedranno mai il paese che promisi con giuramento ad Abrahamo, a Isacco ed a Giacobbe, perché non m’hanno seguitato fedelmente,

12 salvo Caleb, figliuolo di Gefunne, il Kenizeo, e Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, che hanno seguitato l’Eterno fedelmente.

13 E l’ira dell’Eterno si accese contro Israele; ed ei lo fece andar vagando per il deserto durante quarant’anni, finché tutta la generazione che avea fatto quel male agli occhi dell’Eterno, fosse consumata.

14 Ed ecco che voi sorgete al posto de’ vostri padri, razza d’uomini peccatori, per rendere l’ira dell’Eterno anche più ardente contro Israele.

15 Perché, se voi vi sviate da lui, egli continuerà a lasciare Israele nel deserto, e voi farete perire tutto questo popolo".

16 Ma quelli s’accostarono a Mosè e gli dissero: "Noi edificheremo qui dei recinti per il nostro bestiame, e delle città per i nostri figliuoli;

17 ma, quanto a noi, ci terremo pronti, in armi, per marciare alla testa de’ figliuoli d’Israele, finché li abbiam condotti ai luogo destinato loro; intanto, i nostri figliuoli dimoreranno nelle città forti a cagione degli abitanti del paese.

18 Non torneremo alle nostre case finché ciascuno de’ figliuoli d’Israele non abbia preso possesso della sua eredità;

19 e non possederemo nulla con loro al di là del Giordano e più oltre, giacché la nostra eredità ci è toccata da questa parte dei Giordano, a oriente".

20 E Mosè disse loro: "Se fate questo, se vi armate per andare a combattere davanti all’Eterno,

21 se tutti quelli di voi che s’armeranno passeranno il Giordano davanti all’Eterno finch’egli abbia cacciato i suoi nemici dal suo cospetto,

22 e se non tornate che quando il paese vi sarà sottomesso davanti all’Eterno, voi non sarete colpevoli di fronte all’Eterno e di fronte a Israele, e questo paese sarà vostra proprietà davanti all’Eterno.

23 Ma, se non fate così, voi avrete peccato contro l’Eterno; e sappiate che il vostro peccato vi ritroverà.

24 Edificatevi delle città per i vostri figliuoli e dei recinti per i vostri greggi, e fate quello che la vostra bocca ha proferito".

25 E i figliuoli di Gad e i figliuoli di Ruben parlarono a Mosè, dicendo: "I tuoi servi faranno quello che il mio signore comanda.

26 I nostri fanciulli, le nostre mogli, i nostri greggi e tutto il nostro bestiame rimarranno qui nelle città di Galaad;

27 ma i tuoi servi, tutti quanti armati per la guerra, andranno a combattere davanti all’Eterno, come dice il mio signore".

28 Allora Mosè dette per loro degli ordini al sacerdote Eleazar, a Giosuè figliuolo di Nun e ai capi famiglia delle tribù de’ figliuoli d’Israele.

29 Mosè disse loro: "Se i figliuoli di Gad e i figliuoli di Ruben passano con voi il Giordano tutti armati per combattere davanti all’Eterno, e se il paese sarà sottomesso davanti a voi, darete loro come proprietà il paese di Galaad.

30 Ma se non passano armati con voi, avranno la loro proprietà tra voi nel paese di Canaan".

31 E i figliuoli di Gad e i figliuoli di Ruben risposero dicendo: "Faremo come l’Eterno ha detto ai tuoi servi.

32 Passeremo in armi, davanti all’Eterno, nel paese di Canaan; ma il possesso della nostra eredità resti per noi di qua dal Giordano".

33 Mosè dunque dette ai figliuoli di Gad, ai figliuoli di Ruben e alla metà della tribù di Manasse, figliuolo di Giuseppe, il regno di Sihon, re degli Amorei, e il regno di Og, re di Basan: il paese, le sue città e i territori delle città del paese all’intorno.

34 E i figliuoli di Gad edificarono Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, Atroth-Shofan,

35 Iazer, Iogbehah,

36 Beth-Nimra e Beth-Haran, città fortificate, e fecero de’ recinti per i greggi.

37 E i figliuoli di Ruben edificarono Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, Nebo e Baal-Meon,

38 i cui nomi furon mutati, e Sibmah, e dettero dei nomi alle città che edificarono.

39 E i figliuoli di Makir, figliuolo di Manasse, andarono nel paese di Galaad, lo presero, e ne cacciarono gli Amorei che vi stavano.

40 Mosè dunque dette Galaad a Makir, figliuolo di Manasse, che vi si stabilì.

41 Iair, figliuolo di Manasse, andò anch’egli e prese i loro borghi, e li chiamò Havvoth-Iair.

42 E Nobah andò e prese Kenath co’ suoi villaggi, e le diede il suo nome di Nobah.

1 2 Now the Bnei Reuven and the Bnei Gad had a very great multitude of mikneh; and when they saw Eretz Yazer, and Eretz Gil`ad, that, hinei, the makom was a makom for mikneh;

2 The Bnei Gad and the Bnei Reuven came and spoke unto Moshe, and to Eleazar HaKohen, and unto the nasiim of the Edah, saying,

3 Atarot, and Divon, and Yazer, and Nimrah, and Chesbon, and Elealeh, and Sevam, and Nevo, and Beon,

4 Even HaAretz which Hashem struck to conquer before the Adat Yisroel, is an eretz for mikneh, and thy avadim have mikneh.

5 They said, If we have found chen in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy avadim for an achuzzah, and bring us not over Yarden.

6 And Moshe said unto the Bnei Gad and to the Bnei Reuven, Shall your achim go to milchamah while ye sit here?

7 And why discourage ye the lev Bnei Yisroel from going over into HaAretz which Hashem hath given them?

8 Thus did Avoteichem, when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over HaAretz.

9 For when they went up unto the Eshcol Valley, and saw HaAretz, they discouraged the lev Bnei Yisroel, that they should not go into HaAretz which Hashem had given them.

10 And the Af Hashem was kindled on that day, and He swore, saying,

11 Surely none of the anashim that came up out of Mitzrayim, from twenty years old and upward, shall see HaAdamah which I swore unto Avraham, unto Yitzchak, and unto Ya’akov; because they have not fully followed Me;

12 Except Kalev Ben Yephunneh the Kenezi, and Yehoshua Ben Nun; for they have fully followed after Hashem.

13 And the Af Hashem was kindled against Yisroel, and He made them wander in the midbar arba’im shanah, until kol hador that had done harah in the sight of Hashem, were consumed.

14 And, hinei, ye are risen up in the place of Avoteichem a brood of anashim chatta’im to add even more to charon af Hashem against Yisroel.

15 For if ye turn away from after Him, He will yet again leave them in the midbar; and ye shall destroy kol HaAm Hazeh.

16 And they came near unto him, and said, We will build gidrot tzon here for our mikneh, and towns for our little ones;

17 But we ourselves will go ready armed ahead of the Bnei Yisroel, until we have brought them unto their makom; and our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of HaAretz.

18 We will not return unto bateinu, until the Bnei Yisroel have inherited every ish his nachalah.

19 For we will not inherit with them across the Yarden, or beyond; because our nachalah is fallen to us on this side of the Yarden eastward.

20 And Moshe said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before Hashem to milchamah,

21 And will go all of you armed over Yarden before Hashem, until He hath driven out His oyevim from before Him,

22 And HaAretz be subdued before Hashem; then afterward ye shall return, and be nekiyim before Hashem, and before Yisroel; and HaAretz Hazot shall be your achuzzah before Hashem.

23 But if ye will not do so, hinei, ye have sinned against Hashem and be sure chattatechem (your sin) will find you out.

24 Build you towns for your little ones, and your gidrot tzon; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.

25 And the Bnei Gad and the Bnei Reuven spoke unto Moshe saying, Thy avadim will do as adoni commandeth.

26 Our little ones, our nashim, our mikneh, and all behemeteinu, shall stay there in the cities of Gil‘ad;

27 But thy avadim will cross over, every man armed for war, before Hashem to battle, as adoni saith.

28 So concerning them Moshe commanded Eleazar HaKohen, and Yehoshua Ben Nun, and the Rashei Avot HaMattot of the Bnei Yisroel;

29 And Moshe said unto them, If the Bnei Gad and the Bnei Reuven will cross with you over Yarden, every man armed for battle, before Hashem, and HaAretz shall be subdued before you, then ye shall give them Eretz Gil‘ad for an achuzzah;

30 But if they will not cross over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in Eretz Kena’an.

31 And the Bnei Gad and the Bnei Reuven answered, saying, As Hashem hath said unto thy avadim, so will we do.

32 We will cross over armed before Hashem into Eretz Kena’an, that the achuzzat nachalatenu on that side of the Yarden may be our own.

33 And Moshe gave unto them, even to the Bnei Gad, and to the Bnei Reuven, and unto half the shevet of Menasheh Ben Yosef, the kingdom of Sichon Melech HaEmori, and the kingdom of Og Melech HaBashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the territories, even the cities of the surrounding land.

34 And the Bnei Gad built Divon, and Atarot, and Aroer,

35 And Atrot, Shophan, Ya’azer, and Yogbehah,

36 And Beit Nimrah and Beit Haran, fortified cities; and gidrot tzon.

37 And the Bnei Reuven built Cheshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiryatayim,

38 And Nevo, and Ba’al Me’on, (their shem being changed) and Sivmah; and gave other shmot unto the cities which they built.

39 And the Bnei Machir Ben Menasheh went to Gil‘ad, and captured it, and dispossessed the Emori (Amorite) which was in it.

40 And Moshe gave Gil‘ad unto Machir Ben Menasheh; and he dwelt therein.

41 And Ya’ir Ben Menasheh went and captured the settlements thereof, and called them Chavot Ya’ir.

42 And Novach went and captured Kenat, and the villages thereof, and called it Novach, after shmo.
