1 I PROVERBI di Salomone, figliuolo di Davide, Re d’Israele;

2 Per conoscere sapienza ed ammaestramento, Per intendere i detti di senno;

3 Per ricevere ammaestramento di buon senno, Di giustizia, di giudicio e di dirittura;

4 Per dare avvedimento a’ semplici. E conoscenza, ed accorgimento a’ fanciulli.

5 Il savio li udirà, e ne accrescerà la sua scienza; E l’uomo intendente ne acquisterà buoni consigli, e governo;

6 Per comprender le sentenze ed i bei motti, Le parole de’ savi ed i lor detti oscuri.

7 IL timor del Signore è il capo della scienza; Ma gli stolti sprezzano la sapienza e l’ammaestramento.

8 Ascolta, figliuol mio l’ammaestramento di tuo padre; E non lasciar l’insegnamento di tua madre;

9 Perciocchè saranno un fregio grazioso al tuo capo, E collane al tuo collo.

10 Figliuol mio, se i peccatori ti vogliono sedurre, Non acconsentir loro.

11 Se dicono: Vieni con noi, poniamo agguati al sangue, Insidiamo di nascosto l’innocente impunitamente;

12 Tranghiottiamoli tutti vivi, come il sepolcro; E tutti intieri, a guisa di quelli che scendono nella fossa;

13 Noi troveremo ogni sorte di preziosi beni, Noi empieremo le nostre case di spoglie;

14 Tu trarrai la tua sorte con noi; Fra noi non vi sarà che una sola borsa;

15 Figliuol mio, non inviarti con loro; Rattieni il tuo piè dal lor sentiero.

16 Perciocchè i lor piedi corrono al male, E si affrettano a spandere il sangue.

17 Perciocchè invano si tende la rete Dinanzi agli occhi d’ogni uccello;

18 Ma essi pongono agguati al lor proprio sangue, Ed insidiano nascosamente l’anima loro.

19 Tali sono i sentieri d’ogni uomo dato all’avarizia; Ella coglie l’anima di coloro in cui ella si trova.

20 LA somma Sapienza grida di fuori; Ella fa sentir la sua voce per le piazze;

21 Ella grida in capo de’ luoghi delle turbe; Ella pronunzia i suoi ragionamenti nell’entrate delle porte, nella città,

22 Dicendo: Infino a quando, o scempi, amerete la scempietà? Ed infino a quando gli schernitori prenderanno piacere in ischernire, Ed i pazzi avranno in odio la scienza?

23 Convertitevi alla mia riprensione; Ecco, io vi sgorgherò lo spirito mio; Io vi farò assapere le mie parole.

24 Perciocchè io ho gridato, e voi avete ricusato di ascoltare; Io ho distesa la mano, e niuno ha porto attenzione;

25 Ed avete lasciato ogni mio consiglio, E non avete gradita la mia correzione;

26 Io altresì riderò della vostra calamità; Io mi farò beffe, quando il vostro spavento sarà venuto;

27 Quando il vostro spavento sarà venuto, a guisa di ruina, E la vostra calamità sarà giunta, a guisa di turbo; Quando angoscia e distretta vi sarà sopraggiunta.

28 Allora essi grideranno a me, ma io non risponderò; Mi ricercheranno sollecitamente, ma non mi troveranno;

29 Perciocchè hanno odiata la scienza, E non hanno eletto il timor del Signore;

30 E non hanno gradito il mio consiglio, Ed hanno disdegnata ogni mia correzione.

31 Perciò mangeranno del frutto delle lor vie, E saranno saziati de’ lor consigli.

32 Perciocchè lo sviamento degli scempi li uccide, E l’error degli stolti li fa perire.

33 Ma chi mi ascolta abiterà in sicurtà, E viverà in riposo, fuor di spavento di male.

1 The proverbs of Solomon, David's son who was king of Israel, [given]

2 to grasp wisdom and discipline, to understand deep thoughts,

3 to acquire the discipline of wise behavior-- righteousness and justice and fairness--

4 to give insight to gullible people, to give knowledge and foresight to the young--

5 a wise person will listen and continue to learn, and an understanding person will gain direction--

6 to understand a proverb and a clever saying, the words of wise people and their riddles.

7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. Stubborn fools despise wisdom and discipline.

8 My son, listen to your father's discipline, and do not neglect your mother's teachings,

9 because discipline and teachings are a graceful garland on your head and a [golden] chain around your neck.

10 My son, if sinners lure you, do not go along.

11 If they say, "Come with us. Let's set an ambush to kill someone. Let's hide to ambush innocent people for fun.

12 We'll swallow them alive like the grave, like those in good health who go into the pit.

13 We'll find all kinds of valuable possessions. We'll fill our homes with stolen goods.

14 Join us. We'll split the loot equally."

15 My son, do not follow them in their way. Do not even set foot on their path,

16 because they rush to do evil and hurry to shed blood.

17 It does no good to spread a net within the sight of any bird.

18 But these people set an ambush for their own murder. They go into hiding only to lose their lives.

19 This is what happens to everyone who is greedy for unjust gain. Greed takes away his life.

20 Wisdom sings her song in the streets. In the public squares she raises her voice.

21 At the corners of noisy streets she calls out. At the entrances to the city she speaks her words,

22 "How long will you gullible people love being so gullible? How long will you mockers find joy in your mocking? How long will you fools hate knowledge?

23 "Turn to me when I warn you. I will generously pour out my spirit for you. I will make my words known to you.

24 "I called, and you refused to listen. I stretched out my hands to you, and no one paid attention.

25 You ignored all my advice. You did not want me to warn you.

26 I will laugh at your calamity. I will make fun of you when panic strikes you,

27 when panic strikes you like a violent storm, when calamity strikes you like a wind storm, when trouble and anguish come to you.

28 "They will call to me at that time, but I will not answer. They will look for me, but they will not find me,

29 because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD.

30 They refused my advice. They despised my every warning.

31 They will eat the fruit of their lifestyle. They will be stuffed with their own schemes.

32 "Gullible people kill themselves because of their turning away. Fools destroy themselves because of their indifference.

33 But whoever listens to me will live without worry and will be free from the dread of disaster."
