1 QUESTE ancora son sentenze di Salomone, le quali gli uomini di Ezechia, re di Giuda, raccolsero.

2 La gloria di Dio è di celar la cosa; Ma la gloria dei re è d’investigare la cosa.

3 L’altezza del cielo, e la profondità della terra, E il cuor dei re, non si possono investigare.

4 Togli le schiume dell’argento, E ne riuscirà un vaso all’orafo.

5 Rimuovi l’empio d’innanzi al re, E il trono di esso sarà stabilito con giustizia.

6 Non fare il vanaglorioso in presenza del re, E non istar nel luogo de’ grandi;

7 Perciocchè val maglio che ti si dica: Sali qua; Che se tu fossi abbassato davanti al principe, Che gli occhi tuoi hanno veduto.

8 Non uscir subitamente alla contesa; Che talora alla fin d’essa tu non faccia qualche cosa, Quando il tuo prossimo ti avrà fatta vergogna.

9 Dibatti la tua lite col tuo prossimo; Ma non palesare il segreto di un altro;

10 Che talora chi ti ode non ti vituperi, E che la tua infamia non possa essere riparata.

11 La parola detta in modi convenevoli È simile a pomi d’oro tra figure d’argento.

12 Il savio riprenditore ad un orecchio ubbidiente È un monile d’oro, ed un ornamento d’oro finissimo.

13 Il messo fedele è, a quelli che lo mandano, Come il fresco della neve in giorno di ricolta; E ristora l’anima de’ suoi padroni.

14 L’uomo che si gloria falsamente di liberalità È simile alle nuvole, ed al vento senza pioggia.

15 Il principe si piega con sofferenza, E la lingua dolce rompe le ossa.

16 Se tu trovi del miele, mangiane quanto ti basta; Che talora, se tu te ne satolli, tu nol vomiti fuori.

17 Metti di rado il piè in casa del tuo prossimo; Che talora egli non si sazii di te, e ti odii.

18 Un uomo che dice falsa testimonianza contro al suo prossimo È come un martello, una spada, ed una saetta acuta.

19 La confidanza che si pone nel disleale è, in giorno di afflizione, Un dente rotto, ed un piè dislogato.

20 Chi canta canzoni presso di un cuor dolente È come chi si toglie la vesta d’addosso in giorno di freddo, E come l’aceto sopra il nitro.

21 Se colui che ti odia ha fame, dagli da mangiar del pane; E se ha sete, dagli da bere dell’acqua;

22 Perciocchè così tu gli metterai delle brace in su la testa; E il Signore te ne farà la retribuzione.

23 Il vento settentrionale dissipa la pioggia; E il viso sdegnoso la lingua che sparla di nascosto.

24 Meglio vale abitare sopra il canto di un tetto, Che con una moglie rissosa in casa comune.

25 Una buona novella di lontan paese È come acqua fresca alla persona stanca ed assetata.

26 Il giusto che vacilla davanti all’empio, È una fonte calpestata, ed una vena d’acque guasta.

27 Il mangiar troppo miele non è bene, E l’investigar colui che è la gloria degli uomini è cosa gloriosa.

28 L’uomo, il cui animo non ha ritegno alcuno, È una città sfasciata, senza mura.

1 These also are Solomon's proverbs that were copied by the men of King Hezekiah of Judah.

2 It is the glory of God to hide things but the glory of kings to investigate them.

3 [Like] the high heavens and the deep earth, so the mind of kings is unsearchable.

4 Take the impurities out of silver, and a vessel is ready for the silversmith to mold.

5 Take a wicked person away from the presence of a king, and justice will make his throne secure.

6 Do not brag about yourself in front of a king or stand in the spot that belongs to notable people,

7 because it is better to be told, "Come up here," than to be put down in front of a prince whom your eyes have seen.

8 Do not be in a hurry to go to court. What will you do in the end if your neighbor disgraces you?

9 Present your argument to your neighbor, but do not reveal another person's secret.

10 Otherwise, when he hears about it, he will humiliate you, and his evil report about you will never disappear.

11 [Like] golden apples in silver settings, [so] is a word spoken at the right time.

12 [Like] a gold ring and a fine gold ornament, [so] is constructive criticism to the ear of one who listens.

13 Like the coolness of snow on a harvest day, [so] is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him: He refreshes his masters.

14 [Like] a dense fog or a dust storm, [so] is a person who brags about a gift that he does not give.

15 With patience you can persuade a ruler, and a soft tongue can break bones.

16 When you find honey, eat only as much as you need. Otherwise, you will have too much and vomit.

17 Do not set foot in your neighbor's house too often. Otherwise, he will see too much of you and hate you.

18 [Like] a club and a sword and a sharp arrow, [so] is a person who gives false testimony against his neighbor.

19 [Like] a broken tooth and a lame foot, [so] is confidence in an unfaithful person in a [time of] crisis.

20 [Like] taking off a coat on a cold day or pouring vinegar on baking soda, so is singing songs to one who has an evil heart.

21 If your enemy is hungry, give him some food to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him some water to drink.

22 [In this way] you will make him feel guilty and ashamed, and the LORD will reward you.

23 [As] the north wind brings rain, so a whispering tongue brings angry looks.

24 Better to live on a corner of a roof than to share a home with a quarreling woman.

25 [Like] cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from far away.

26 [Like] a muddied spring and a polluted well, [so] is a righteous person who gives in to a wicked person.

27 Eating too much honey is not good, and searching for honor is not honorable.

28 [Like] a city broken into [and] left without a wall, [so] is a person who lacks self-control.
