1 LA Sapienza non grida ella? E la Prudenza non dà ella fuori la sua voce?

2 Ella sta in piè in capo de’ luoghi elevati, in su la via, Ne’ crocicchi.

3 Ella grida presso alle porte, alla bocca della città, All’entrata degli usci delle case,

4 Dicendo: Io grido a voi, o uomini principali; E la mia voce s’indirizza ancora al volgo.

5 Semplici, intendete che cosa sia avvedimento; E voi stolti, intendete che cosa sia buon senno.

6 Ascoltate; perciocchè io proporrò cose eccellenti; L’aprir delle mie labbra sarà di cose diritte.

7 Conciossiachè il mio palato ragionerà di verità; Ma l’empietà è ciò che le mie labbra abbominano.

8 Tutti i detti della mia bocca son con giustizia; In essi non vi è nulla di torto o di perverso.

9 Essi tutti son diritti agl’intendenti, E bene addirizzati a coloro che hanno trovata la scienza.

10 Ricevete il mio ammaestramento, e non dell’argento; E scienza, anzi che oro eletto.

11 Perciocchè la sapienza è migliore che le perle; E tutte le cose le più care non l’agguagliano.

12 Io, la Sapienza, abito nell’avvedimento, E trovo la conoscenza de’ buoni avvisi.

13 Il timor del Signore è odiare il male; Io odio la superbia, e l’alterezza, e la via della malvagità, E la bocca perversa.

14 A me appartiene il consiglio e la buona ragione; Io son la prudenza; a me appartiene la forza.

15 Per me regnano i re, Ed i rettori fanno statuti di giustizia.

16 Per me signoreggiano i signori, Ed i principi, e tutti i giudici della terra.

17 Io amo quelli che mi amano; E quelli che mi cercano mi troveranno.

18 Ricchezze e gloria son meco; Beni permanenti e giustizia.

19 Il mio frutto è migliore che oro, anzi che oro finissimo; E la mia rendita migliore che argento eletto.

20 Io cammino per la via della giustizia, In mezzo de’ sentieri della dirittura;

21 Per fare eredare il vero essere a quelli che mi amano, Ed empiere i lor tesori.

22 IL Signore mi possedeva al principio della sua via, Avanti le sue opere, ab eterno.

23 Io sono stata costituita in principato ab eterno, Dal principio, avanti che la terra fosse.

24 Avanti che fossero abissi, Nè fonti, nè gorghi d’acque, io fui prodotta.

25 Io fui prodotta innanzi che i monti fossero profondati, Avanti i colli;

26 Mentre egli non avea ancora fatta la terra, nè le campagne, Nè la sommità del terreno del mondo.

27 Quando egli ordinava i cieli, io v’era; Quando egli disegnava il giro sopra la superficie dell’abisso;

28 Quando egli fermava il cielo disopra; Quando egli fortificava le fonti dell’abisso;

29 Quando egli poneva il suo termine al mare, Talchè le acque non possono trapassare il suo comandamento; Quando egli poneva i fondamenti della terra;

30 Ed era appo lui come un allievo, Ed era le sue delizie tuttodì; Io mi sollazzava in ogni tempo nel suo cospetto.

31 Io mi sollazzo nella parte abitata della sua terra; Ed i miei diletti sono co’ figliuoli degli uomini.

32 Ora dunque, figliuoli, ascoltatemi: Beati coloro che osservano le mie vie.

33 Ascoltate l’ammaestramento, e diventate savi, E non lo schifate.

34 Beato l’uomo che mi ascolta, Per vegliar tuttodì presso a’ miei usci; Per istare a guardia agli stipiti delle mie porte.

35 Perciocchè chi mi trova, trova la vita, Ed ottiene benevolenza dal Signore.

36 Ma chi pecca contro a me fa ingiuria all’anima sua; Tutti quelli che mi odiano amano la morte.

1 Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise its voice?

2 [Wisdom] takes its stand on high ground, by the wayside where the roads meet,

3 near the gates to the city. At the entrance [wisdom] sings its song,

4 "I am calling to all of you, and my appeal is to all people.

5 You gullible people, learn how to be sensible. You fools, get a heart that has understanding.

6 Listen! I am speaking about noble things, and my lips will say what is right.

7 My mouth expresses the truth, and wickedness is disgusting to my lips.

8 Everything I say is fair, and there is nothing twisted or crooked in it.

9 All of it is clear to a person who has understanding and right to those who have acquired knowledge.

10 Take my discipline, not silver, and my knowledge rather than fine gold,

11 because wisdom is better than jewels. Nothing you desire can equal it.

12 "I, Wisdom, live with insight, and I acquire knowledge and foresight.

13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, evil behavior, and twisted speech.

14 Advice and priceless wisdom are mine. I, Understanding, have strength.

15 Through me kings reign, and rulers decree fair laws.

16 Through me princes rule, so do nobles and all fair judges.

17 I love those who love me. Those eagerly looking for me will find me.

18 I have riches and honor, lasting wealth and righteousness.

19 What I produce is better than gold, pure gold. What I yield is better than fine silver.

20 I walk in the way of righteousness, on the paths of justice,

21 to give an inheritance to those who love me and to fill their treasuries.

22 "The LORD already possessed me long ago, when his way began, before any of his works.

23 I was appointed from everlasting from the first, before the earth began.

24 I was born before there were oceans, before there were springs filled with water.

25 I was born before the mountains were settled in their places and before the hills,

26 when he had not yet made land or fields or the first dust of the world.

27 "When he set up the heavens, I was there. When he traced the horizon on the surface of the ocean,

28 when he established the skies above, when he determined the currents in the ocean,

29 when he set a limit for the sea so the waters would not overstep his command, when he traced the foundations of the earth,

30 I was beside him as a master craftsman. I made him happy day after day, I rejoiced in front of him all the time,

31 found joy in his inhabited world, and delighted in the human race.

32 "Now, sons, listen to me. Blessed are those who follow my ways.

33 Listen to discipline, and become wise. Do not leave my ways.

34 Blessed is the person who listens to me, watches at my door day after day, and waits by my doorposts.

35 Whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD.

36 Whoever sins against me harms himself. All those who hate me love death."
