Proverbi 9

1 LA somma Sapienza ha edificata la sua casa, Ella ha tagliate le sue colonne in numero di sette;

1 Wisdom has built her house and made seven columns for it.

2 Ella ha ammazzati i suoi animali, ha temperato il suo vino. Ed anche ha apparecchiata la sua mensa.

2 She has had an animal killed for a feast, mixed spices in the wine, and set the table.

3 Ella ha mandate le sue serventi a gridare D’in su i poggiuoli degli alti luoghi della città:

3 She has sent her servant women to call out from the highest place in town:

4 Chi è scempio? riducasi qua. E a dire a quelli che sono scemi di senno:

4 "Come in, ignorant people!" And to the foolish she says,

5 Venite, mangiate del mio pane, E bevete del vino che io ho temperato.

5 "Come, eat my food and drink the wine that I have mixed.

6 Lasciate le scempietà, e voi viverete; E camminate per la via della prudenza.

6 Leave the company of ignorant people, and live. Follow the way of knowledge."

7 Chi corregge lo schernitore ne riceve vituperio; E chi riprende l’empio ne riceve macchia.

7 If you correct conceited people, you will only be insulted. If you reprimand evil people, you will only get hurt.

8 Non riprender lo schernitore, Che talora egli non ti odii; Riprendi il savio, ed egli ti amerà.

8 Never correct conceited people; they will hate you for it. But if you correct the wise, they will respect you.

9 Insegna al savio, ed egli diventerà più savio; Ammaestra il giusto, ed egli crescerà in dottrina.

9 Anything you say to the wise will make them wiser. Whatever you tell the righteous will add to their knowledge.

10 Il principio della sapienza è il timor del Signore; E la scienza de’ santi è la prudenza.

10 To be wise you must first have reverence for the Lord. If you know the Holy One, you have understanding.

11 Perciocchè per me ti saranno moltiplicati i giorni, E ti saranno aggiunti anni di vita.

11 Wisdom will add years to your life.

12 Se sei savio, sarai savio per te; Se altresì sei schernitore, tu solo ne porterai la pena.

12 You are the one who will profit if you have wisdom, and if you reject it, you are the one who will suffer.

13 La donna stolta, strepitosa, Scempia, e che non ha alcuno intendimento,

13 Stupidity is like a loud, ignorant, shameless woman.

14 Siede anch’essa all’entrata della sua casa, In seggio, ne’ luoghi elevati della città.

14 She sits at the door of her house or on a seat in the highest part of town,

15 Per gridare a coloro che passano per la via, Che vanno a dirittura a lor cammino:

15 and calls out to people passing by, who are minding their own business:

16 Chi è scempio? riducasi qua. E se vi è alcuno scemo di senno, gli dice:

16 "Come in, ignorant people!" To the foolish she says,

17 Le acque rubate son dolci, E il pane preso di nascosto è dilettevole.

17 "Stolen water is sweeter. Stolen bread tastes better."

18 Ed egli non sa che là sono i morti; E che quelli ch’ella ha convitati son nel fondo dell’inferno.

18 Her victims do not know that the people die who go to her house, that those who have already entered are now deep in the world of the dead.
