1 También éstos son proverbios de Salomón, que transcribieron los hombres de Ezequías, rey de Judá:
1 These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied:
2 Es gloria de Dios encubrir una cosa, pero la gloria de los reyes es investigar un asunto.
2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
3 Como la altura de los cielos y la profundidad de la tierra, así es el corazón de los reyes, inescrutable.
3 As the heavens for height and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4 Quita la escoria de la plata, y saldrá un vaso para el orfebre;
4 Take away the dross from silver, And it will go to the silversmith for jewelry.
5 quita al malo de delante del rey, y su trono se afianzará en la justicia.
5 Take away the wicked from before the king, And his throne will be established in righteousness.
6 No hagas ostentación ante el rey, y no te pongas en el lugar de los grandes;
6 Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, And do not stand in the place of the great;
7 porque es mejor que te digan: Sube acá, a que te humillen delante del príncipe a quien tus ojos han visto.
7 For it is better that he say to you, "Come up here," Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom your eyes have seen.
8 No te apresures a litigar; pues ¿qué harás al final, cuando tu prójimo te averguence?
8 Do not go hastily to court; For what will you do in the end, When your neighbor has put you to shame?
9 Discute tu caso con tu prójimo y no descubras el secreto de otro,
9 Debate your case with your neighbor, And do not disclose the secret to another;
10 no sea que te reproche el que lo oiga y tu mala fama no se acabe.
10 Lest he who hears it expose your shame, And your reputation be ruined.
11 Como manzanas de oro en engastes de plata es la palabra dicha a su tiempo.
11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver.
12 Como pendiente de oro y adorno de oro fino es el sabio que reprende al oído atento.
12 Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold Is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear.
13 Como frescura de nieve en tiempo de la siega es el mensajero fiel para los que lo envían, porque refresca el alma de sus señores.
13 Like the cold of snow in time of harvest Is a faithful messenger to those who send him, For he refreshes the soul of his masters.
14 Como las nubes y el viento sin lluvia es el hombre que se jacta falsamente de sus dones.
14 Whoever falsely boasts of giving Is like clouds and wind without rain.
15 Con la mucha paciencia se persuade al príncipe, y la lengua suave quebranta los huesos.
15 By long forbearance a ruler is persuaded, And a gentle tongue breaks a bone.
16 ¿Has hallado miel? Come sólo lo que necesites, no sea que te hartes y la vomites.
16 Have you found honey? Eat only as much as you need, Lest you be filled with it and vomit.
17 No frecuente tu pie la casa de tu vecino, no sea que él se hastíe de ti y te aborrezca.
17 Seldom set foot in your neighbor's house, Lest he become weary of you and hate you.
18 Como maza y espada y aguda saeta es el hombre que levanta falso testimonio contra su prójimo.
18 A man who bears false witness against his neighbor Is like a club, a sword, and a sharp arrow.
19 Como diente malo y pie que resbala es la confianza en el hombre pérfido en tiempo de angustia.
19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is like a bad tooth and a foot out of joint.
20 Como el que se quita la ropa en día de frío, o como el vinagre sobre la soda, es el que canta canciones a un corazón afligido.
20 Like one who takes away a garment in cold weather, And like vinegar on soda, Is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.
21 Si tu enemigo tiene hambre, dale de comer pan, y si tiene sed, dale de beber agua;
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
22 porque así amontonarás brasas sobre su cabeza, y el SEÑOR te recompensará.
22 For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, And the Lord will reward you.
23 El viento del norte trae la lluvia, y la lengua murmuradora, el semblante airado.
23 The north wind brings forth rain, And a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.
24 Mejor es vivir en un rincón del terrado que en una casa con mujer rencillosa.
24 It is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.
25 Como agua fría para el alma sedienta, así son las buenas nuevas de una tierra lejana.
25 As cold water to a weary soul, So is good news from a far country.
26 Como manantial hollado y pozo contaminado es el justo que cede ante el impío.
26 A righteous man who falters before the wicked Is like a murky spring and a polluted well.
27 No es bueno comer mucha miel, ni el buscar la propia gloria es gloria.
27 It is not good to eat much honey; So to seek one's own glory is not glory.
28 Como ciudad invadida y sin murallas es el hombre que no domina su espíritu.
28 Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.
