NIRV 1 When you sit down to eat with a ruler, look carefully at what's in front of you. NIV 1 When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, NIRV 2 Put a knife to your throat if you like to eat too much. Don't try to take over the fields of children whose fathers have died. NIV 10 Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless, NIRV 11 The One who guards them is strong. He will stand up for them in court against you. NIV 11 for their Defender is strong; he will take up their case against you. NIRV 12 Apply your heart to what you are taught. Listen carefully to words of knowledge. NIV 12 Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge. NIRV 13 Don't hold back training from a child. If you correct him, he won't die. Keep your heart on the right path NIV 19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and set your heart on the right path: NIRV 20 Don't join those who drink too much wine. Don't join those who stuff themselves with meat. NIV 20 Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, NIRV 21 Those who drink or eat too much will become poor. May the woman who gave birth to you be happy. NIV 25 May your father and mother rejoice; may she who gave you birth be joyful! NIRV 26 My son, give me your heart. Keep your eyes on the way I live. NIV 26 My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways, NIRV 27 A prostitute is like a deep pit. A wife who commits adultery is like a narrow well. Or those who like to taste wine that is mixed with spices. NIV 30 Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. NIRV 31 Don't look at wine when it is red. Don't look at it when it bubbles in the cup. And don't look at it when it goes down smoothly. NIV 31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! NIRV 32 In the end it bites like a snake. It bites like a poisonous serpent. NIV 32 In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. NIRV 33 Your eyes will see strange sights. Your mind will imagine weird things. NIV 33 Your eyes will see strange sights, and your mind will imagine confusing things. NIRV 34 You will feel like someone sleeping on the ocean. You will think you are lying among the ropes in a boat. NIV 34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging. NIRV 35 "They hit me," you will say. "But I'm not hurt! They beat me. But I don't feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?" NIV 35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt! They beat me, but I don’t feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?”
