New Century Version NCV
The Complete Jewish Bible CJB
1 Lord, why are you so far away? Why do you hide when there is trouble?
1
hy, ADONAI, do you stand at a distance? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
2 Proudly the wicked chase down those who suffer. Let them be caught in their own traps.
2
The wicked in their arrogance hunt down the poor, who get caught in the schemes they think up.
3 They brag about the things they want. They bless the greedy but hate the Lord.
3
For the wicked boasts about his lusts; he blesses greed and despises ADONAI.
4 The wicked people are too proud. They do not look for God; there is no room for God in their thoughts.
4
Every scheme of the wicked in his arrogance [says], "There is no God, [so] it won't be held against me."
5 They always succeed. They are far from keeping your laws; they make fun of their enemies.
5
His ways prosper at all times. Your judgments are way up there, so he takes no notice. His adversaries? He scoffs at them all.
6 They say to themselves, "Nothing bad will ever happen to me; I will never be ruined."
6
In his heart he thinks, "I will never be shaken; I won't meet trouble, not now or ever."
7 Their mouths are full of curses, lies, and threats; they use their tongues for sin and evil.
7
His mouth is full of curses, deceit, oppression; under his tongue, mischief and injustice.
8 They hide near the villages. They look for innocent people to kill; they watch in secret for the helpless.
8
He waits near settlements in ambush and kills an innocent man in secret; his eyes are on the hunt for the helpless.
9 They wait in hiding like a lion. They wait to catch poor people; they catch the poor in nets.
9
Lurking unseen like a lion in his lair, he lies in wait to pounce on the poor, then seizes the poor and drags him off in his net.
10 The poor are thrown down and crushed; they are defeated because the others are stronger.
10
Yes, he stoops, crouches down low; and the helpless wretch falls into his clutches.
11 The wicked think, "God has forgotten us. He doesn't see what is happening."
11
He says in his heart, "God forgets, he hides his face, he will never see."
12 Lord, rise up and punish the wicked. Don't forget those who need help.
12
Arise, ADONAI! God, raise your hand! Don't forget the humble!
13 Why do wicked people hate God? They say to themselves, "God won't punish us."
13
Why does the wicked despise God and say in his heart, "It won't be held against me"?
14 Lord, surely you see these cruel and evil things; look at them and do something. People in trouble look to you for help. You are the one who helps the orphans.
14
You have seen; for you look at mischief and grief, so that you can take the matter in hand. The helpless commits himself to you; you help the fatherless.
15 Break the power of wicked people. Punish them for the evil they have done.
15
Break the arm of the wicked! As for the evil man, search out his wickedness until there is none left.
16 The Lord is King forever and ever. Destroy from your land those nations that do not worship you.
16
ADONAI is king forever and ever! The nations have vanished from his land.
17 Lord, you have heard what the poor people want. Do what they ask, and listen to them.
17
ADONAI, you have heard what the humble want; you encourage them and listen to them,
18 Protect the orphans and put an end to suffering so they will no longer be afraid of evil people. For the director of music. Of David.
18
to give justice to the fatherless and oppressed, so that no one on earth will strike terror again.
