1 Listen to my prayer, O Lord, and hear my cry for help!
1
<<A Prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed and pours out his complaint before Yahweh.>> Hear my prayer, Yahweh! Let my cry come to you.
2 When I am in trouble, don't turn away from me! Listen to me, and answer me quickly when I call!
2
Don't hide your face from me in the day of my distress. Turn your ear to me. Answer me quickly in the day when I call.
3 My life is disappearing like smoke; my body is burning like fire.
3
For my days consume away like smoke. My bones are burned as a firebrand.
4 I am beaten down like dry grass; I have lost my desire for food.
4
My heart is blighted like grass, and withered, For I forget to eat my bread.
5 I groan aloud; I am nothing but skin and bones.
5
By reason of the voice of my groaning, My bones stick to my skin.
6 I am like a wild bird in the desert, like an owl in abandoned ruins.
6
I am like a pelican of the wilderness. I have become as an owl of the waste places.
7 I lie awake; I am like a lonely bird on a housetop.
7
I watch, and have become like a sparrow that is alone on the housetop.
8 All day long my enemies insult me; those who mock me use my name in cursing.
8
My enemies reproach me all day. Those who are mad at me use my name as a curse.
9 Because of your anger and fury, ashes are my food, and my tears are mixed with my drink. You picked me up and threw me away.
9
For I have eaten ashes like bread, And mixed my drink with tears,
11 My life is like the evening shadows; I am like dry grass.
11
My days are like a long shadow. I have withered like grass.
12 But you, O Lord, are king forever; all generations will remember you.
12
But you, Yahweh, will abide forever; Your renown endures to all generations.
13 You will rise and take pity on Zion; the time has come to have mercy on her; this is the right time.
13
You will arise and have mercy on Zion; For it is time to have pity on her. Yes, the set time has come.
14 Your servants love her, even though she is destroyed; they have pity on her, even though she is in ruins.
14
For your servants take pleasure in her stones, And have pity on her dust.
15 The nations will fear the Lord; all the kings of the earth will fear his power.
15
So the nations will fear the name of Yahweh; All the kings of the earth your glory.
16 When the Lord rebuilds Zion, he will reveal his greatness.
16
For Yahweh has built up Zion. He has appeared in his glory.
17 He will hear his forsaken people and listen to their prayer.
17
He has responded to the prayer of the destitute, And has not despised their prayer.
18 Write down for the coming generation what the Lord has done, so that people not yet born will praise him.
18
This will be written for the generation to come. A people which will be created will praise Yah.
19 The Lord looked down from his holy place on high, he looked down from heaven to earth.
19
For he has looked down from the height of his sanctuary. From heaven, Yahweh saw the earth;
20 He heard the groans of prisoners and set free those who were condemned to die.
20
To hear the groans of the prisoner; To free those who are condemned to death;
21 And so his name will be proclaimed in Zion, and he will be praised in Jerusalem
21
That men may declare the name of Yahweh in Zion, And his praise in Jerusalem;
22 when nations and kingdoms come together and worship the Lord.
22
When the peoples are gathered together, The kingdoms, to serve Yahweh.
23 The Lord has made me weak while I am still young; he has shortened my life.
23
He weakened my strength along the course. He shortened my days.
24 O God, do not take me away now before I grow old. O Lord, you live forever;
24
I said, "My God, don't take me away in the midst of my days. Your years are throughout all generations.
25 long ago you created the earth, and with your own hands you made the heavens.
25
Of old, you laid the foundation of the earth. The heavens are the work of your hands.
26 They will disappear, but you will remain; they will all wear out like clothes. You will discard them like clothes, and they will vanish.
26
They will perish, but you will endure. Yes, all of them will wear out like a garment. You will change them like a cloak, and they will be changed.
27 But you are always the same, and your life never ends.
27
But you are the same. Your years will have no end.
28 Our children will live in safety, and under your protection their descendants will be secure.
28
The children of your servants will continue. Their seed will be established before you."
