1 I love you, Lord. You are my strength.
1
For the leader. By David the servant of ADONAI, who addressed the words of this song to ADONAI on the day when ADONAI delivered him from the power of all his enemies, including from the power of Sha'ul. He said: "I love you, ADONAI, my strength!
2 The Lord is my rock, my protection, my Savior. My God is my rock. I can run to him for safety. He is my shield and my saving strength, my defender.
2
"ADONAI is my Rock, my fortress and deliverer, my God, my Rock, in whom I find shelter, my shield, the power that saves me, my stronghold.
3 I will call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I will be saved from my enemies.
3
I call on ADONAI, who is worthy of praise; and I am saved from my enemies.
4 The ropes of death came around me; the deadly rivers overwhelmed me.
4
"For the cords of death surrounded me, the floods of B'liya'al terrified me,
5 The ropes of death wrapped around me. The traps of death were before me.
5
the ropes of Sh'ol were wrapped around me, the snares of death lay there before me.
6 In my trouble I called to the Lord. I cried out to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my call for help reached his ears.
6
In my distress I called to ADONAI; I cried out to my God. Out of his temple he heard my voice; my cry reached his ears.
7 The earth trembled and shook. The foundations of the mountains began to shake. They trembled because the Lord was angry.
7
"Then the earth quaked and shook, the foundations of the mountains trembled. They were shaken because he was angry.
8 Smoke came out of his nose, and burning fire came out of his mouth. Burning coals went before him.
8
Smoke arose in his nostrils; out of his mouth came devouring fire; sparks blazed forth from him.
9 He tore open the sky and came down with dark clouds under his feet.
9
He lowered heaven and came down with thick darkness under his feet.
10 He rode a creature with wings and flew. He raced on the wings of the wind.
10
He rode on a keruv; he flew, swooping down on the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his shelter around him, surrounded by fog and clouds.
11
He made darkness his hiding-place, his canopy thick clouds dark with water.
12 Out of the brightness of his presence came clouds with hail and lightning.
12
From the brightness before him, there broke through his thick clouds hailstones and fiery coals.
13 The Lord thundered from heaven; the Most High raised his voice, and there was hail and lightning.
13
"ADONAI also thundered in heaven, Ha'Elyon sounded his voice -hailstones and fiery coals.
14 He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies. His many bolts of lightning confused them with fear.
14
He sent out arrows and scattered them, shot out lightning and routed them.
15 Lord, you spoke strongly. The wind blew from your nose. Then the valleys of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the earth were seen.
15
The channels of water appeared, the foundations of the world were exposed at your rebuke, ADONAI, at the blast of breath from your nostrils.
16 The Lord reached down from above and took me; he pulled me from the deep water.
16
"He sent from on high, he took me and pulled me out of deep water;
17 He saved me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me, because they were too strong for me.
17
he rescued me from my powerful enemy, from those who hated me, for they were stronger than I.
18 They attacked me at my time of trouble, but the Lord supported me.
18
They came against me on my day of disaster, but ADONAI was my support.
19 He took me to a safe place. Because he delights in me, he saved me.
19
He brought me out to an open place; he rescued me, because he took pleasure in me.
20 The Lord spared me because I did what was right. Because I have not done evil, he has rewarded me.
20
ADONAI rewarded me for my uprightness, he repaid me because my hands were clean.
21 I have followed the ways of the Lord; I have not done evil by turning away from my God.
21
"For I have kept the ways of ADONAI, I have not done evil by leaving my God;
22 I remember all his laws and have not broken his rules.
22
for all his rulings were before me, I did not distance his regulations from me.
23 I am innocent before him; I have kept myself from doing evil.
23
I was pure-hearted with him and kept myself from my sin.
24 The Lord rewarded me because I did what was right, because I did what the Lord said was right.
24
"Hence ADONAI repaid me for my uprightness, according to the purity of my hands in his view.
25 Lord, you are loyal to those who are loyal, and you are good to those who are good.
25
With the merciful, you are merciful; with a man who is sincere, you are sincere;
26 You are pure to those who are pure, but you are against those who are bad.
26
with the pure, you are pure; but with the crooked you are cunning.
27 You save the humble, but you bring down those who are proud.
27
People afflicted, you save; but haughty eyes, you humble.
28 Lord, you give light to my lamp. My God brightens the darkness around me.
28
"For you, ADONAI, light my lamp; ADONAI, my God, lights up my darkness.
29 With your help I can attack an army. With God's help I can jump over a wall.
29
With you I can run through a whole troop of men, with my God I can leap a wall.
30 The ways of God are without fault. The Lord's words are pure. He is a shield to those who trust him.
30
"As for God, his way is perfect, the word of ADONAI has been tested by fire; he shields all who take refuge in him.
31 Who is God? Only the Lord. Who is the Rock? Only our God.
31
"For who is God but ADONAI? Who is a Rock but our God?
32 God is my protection. He makes my way free from fault.
32
"It is God who girds me with strength; he makes my way go straight.
33 He makes me like a deer that does not stumble; he helps me stand on the steep mountains.
33
He makes me swift, sure-footed as a deer, and enables me to stand on my high places.
34 He trains my hands for battle so my arms can bend a bronze bow.
34
He trains my hands for war until my arms can bend a bow of bronze;
35 You protect me with your saving shield. You support me with your right hand. You have stooped to make me great.
35
"You give me your shield, which is salvation, your right hand holds me up, your humility makes me great.
36 You give me a better way to live, so I live as you want me to.
36
You lengthen the steps I can take, yet my ankles do not turn.
37 I chased my enemies and caught them. I did not quit until they were destroyed.
37
"I pursued my enemies and overtook them, without turning back until they were destroyed.
38 I crushed them so they couldn't rise up again. They fell beneath my feet.
38
I crushed them, so that they can't get up; they have fallen under my feet.
39 You gave me strength in battle. You made my enemies bow before me.
39
"For you braced me with strength for the battle and bent down my adversaries beneath me.
40 You made my enemies turn back, and I destroyed those who hated me.
40
You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed those who hated me.
41 They called for help, but no one came to save them. They called to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
41
"They cried out, but there was no one to help, even to ADONAI, but he didn't answer.
42 I beat my enemies into pieces, like dust in the wind. I poured them out like mud in the streets.
42
I pulverized them like dust in the wind, threw them out like mud in the streets.
43 You saved me when the people attacked me. You made me the leader of nations. People I never knew serve me.
43
"You also freed me from the quarrels of my people. You made me head of the nations; a people I did not know now serve me
44 As soon as they hear me, they obey me. Foreigners obey me.
44
the moment they hear of me, they obey me, foreigners come cringing to me.
45 They all become afraid and tremble in their hiding places.
45
Foreigners lose heart as they come trembling from their fortresses.
46 The Lord lives! May my Rock be praised.
46
"ADONAI is alive! Blessed is my Rock! Exalted be the God of my salvation,
47 God gives me victory over my enemies and brings people under my rule.
47
the God who avenges me and subdues peoples under me.
48 He saves me from my enemies. You set me over those who hate me. You saved me from cruel men.
48
He delivers me from my enemies. You lift me high above my enemies, you rescue me from violent men.
49 So I will praise you, Lord, among the nations. I will sing praises to your name.
49
"So I give thanks to you, ADONAI, among the nations; I sing praises to your name.
50 The Lord gives great victories to his king. He is loyal to his appointed king, to David and his descendants forever. For the director of music. A psalm of David.
50
Great salvation he gives to his king; he displays grace to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever."
