Psalm 37

CJB

MSG

1 By David: Don't be upset by evildoers or envious of those who do wrong,
1 Don't bother your head with braggarts or wish you could succeed like the wicked.
2 for soon they will wither like grass and fade like the green in the fields.
2 In no time they'll shrivel like grass clippings and wilt like cut flowers in the sun.
3 Trust in ADONAI, and do good; settle in the land, and feed on faithfulness.
3 Get insurance with God and do a good deed, settle down and stick to your last.
4 Then you will delight yourself in ADONAI, and he will give you your heart's desire.
4 Keep company with God, get in on the best.
5 Commit your way to ADONAI; trust in him, and he will act.
5 Open up before God, keep nothing back; he'll do whatever needs to be done:
6 He will make your vindication shine forth like light, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
6 He'll validate your life in the clear light of day and stamp you with approval at high noon.
7 Be still before ADONAI; wait patiently till he comes. Don't be upset by those whose way succeeds because of their wicked plans.
7 Quiet down before God, be prayerful before him. Don't bother with those who climb the ladder, who elbow their way to the top.
8 Stop being angry, put aside rage, and don't be upset - it leads to evil.
8 Bridle your anger, trash your wrath, cool your pipes - it only makes things worse.
9 For evildoers will be cut off, but those hoping in ADONAI will inherit the land.
9 Before long the crooks will be bankrupt; God-investors will soon own the store.
10 Soon the wicked will be no more; you will look for his place, and he won't be there.
10 Before you know it, the wicked will have had it; you'll stare at his once famous place and - nothing!
11 But the meek will inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.
11 Down-to-earth people will move in and take over, relishing a huge bonanza.
12 The wicked plots against the righteous and grinds his teeth at him;
12 Bad guys have it in for the good guys, obsessed with doing them in.
13 but Adonai laughs at the wicked, knowing his day will come.
13 But God isn't losing any sleep; to him they're a joke with no punch line.
14 The wicked have unsheathed their swords, they have strung their bows to bring down the poor and needy, to slaughter those whose way is upright.
14 Bullies brandish their swords, pull back on their bows with a flourish. They're out to beat up on the harmless, or mug that nice man out walking his dog.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.
15 A banana peel lands them flat on their faces - slapstick figures in a moral circus.
16 Better the little that the righteous has than the wealth of all the wicked.
16 Less is more and more is less. One righteous will outclass fifty wicked,
17 For the arms of the wicked will be broken, but ADONAI upholds the righteous.
17 For the wicked are moral weaklings but the righteous are God-strong.
18 ADONAI knows what the wholehearted suffer, but their inheritance lasts forever.
18 God keeps track of the decent folk; what they do won't soon be forgotten.
19 They will not be distressed when times are hard; when famine comes, they will have plenty.
19 In hard times, they'll hold their heads high; when the shelves are bare, they'll be full.
20 For the wicked will perish; ADONAI's enemies will be like sheep fat, ending up as smoke, finished.
20 God-despisers have had it; God's enemies are finished - Stripped bare like vineyards at harvest time, vanished like smoke in thin air.
21 The wicked borrows and doesn't repay, but the righteous is generous and gives.
21 Wicked borrows and never returns; Righteous gives and gives.
22 For those blessed by [ADONAI] will inherit the land, but those cursed by him will be cut off.
22 Generous gets it all in the end; Stingy is cut off at the pass.
23 ADONAI directs a person's steps, and he delights in his way.
23 Stalwart walks in step with God; his path blazed by God, he's happy.
24 He may stumble, but he won't fall headlong, for ADONAI holds him by the hand.
24 If he stumbles, he's not down for long; God has a grip on his hand.
25 I have been young; now I am old; yet not once have I seen the righteous abandoned or his descendants begging for bread.
25 I once was young, now I'm a graybeard - not once have I seen an abandoned believer, or his kids out roaming the streets.
26 All day long he is generous and lends, and his descendants are blessed.
26 Every day he's out giving and lending, his children making him proud.
27 If you turn from evil and do good, you will live safely forever.
27 Turn your back on evil, work for the good and don't quit.
28 For ADONAI loves justice and will not abandon his faithful; they are preserved forever. But the descendants of the wicked will be cut off.
28 God loves this kind of thing, never turns away from his friends. Live this way and you've got it made, but bad eggs will be tossed out.
29 The righteous will inherit the land and live in it forever.
29 The good get planted on good land and put down healthy roots.
30 The mouth of the righteous articulates wisdom, his tongue speaks justice.
30 Righteous chews on wisdom like a dog on a bone, rolls virtue around on his tongue.
31 The Torah of his God is in his heart; his footsteps do not falter.
31 His heart pumps God's Word like blood through his veins; his feet are as sure as a cat's.
32 The wicked keeps his eye on the righteous, seeking a chance to kill him.
32 Wicked sets a watch for Righteous, he's out for the kill.
33 But ADONAI will not leave him in his power or let him be condemned when judged.
33 God, alert, is also on watch - Wicked won't hurt a hair of his head.
34 Put your hope in ADONAI, keep to his way, and he will raise you up to inherit the land. When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
34 Wait passionately for God, don't leave the path. He'll give you your place in the sun while you watch the wicked lose it.
35 I have seen a wicked man wielding great power, flourishing like a shade tree in its native soil.
35 I saw Wicked bloated like a toad, croaking pretentious nonsense.
36 But I passed by again, and he was no longer there; I looked for him, but he could not be found.
36 The next time I looked there was nothing - a punctured bladder, vapid and limp.
37 Observe the pure person, consider the upright; for the peaceful person will have posterity.
37 Keep your eye on the healthy soul, scrutinize the straight life; There's a future in strenuous wholeness.
38 But transgressors will all be destroyed; the posterity of the wicked will be cut off.
38 But the willful will soon be discarded; insolent souls are on a dead-end street.
39 ADONAI is the one who saves the righteous; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
39 The spacious, free life is from God, it's also protected and safe.
40 ADONAI helps them and rescues them, rescues them from the wicked and saves them; because they take refuge in him.
40 God-strengthened, we're delivered from evil - when we run to him, he saves us.
