1 (37-1) <A psalm for David, for a remembrance of the sabbath.> (37-2) Rebuke me not, O Lord, in thy indignation; nor chastise me in thy wrath.
1 LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.
2 (37-3) For thy arrows are fastened in me: and thy hand hath been strong upon me.
2 Your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down on me.
3 (37-4) There is no health in my flesh, because of thy wrath: there is no peace for my bones, because of my sins.
3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.
4 (37-5) For my iniquities are gone over my head: and as a heavy burden are become heavy upon me.
4 My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.
5 (37-6) My sores are putrefied and corrupted, because of my foolishness.
5 My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly.
6 (37-7) I am become miserable, and am bowed down even to the end: I walked sorrowful all the day long.
6 I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning.
7 (37-8) For my loins are filled with illusions; and there is no health in my flesh.
7 My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body.
8 (37-9) I am afflicted and humbled exceedingly: I roared with the groaning of my heart.
8 I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.
9 (37-10) Lord, all my desire is before thee, and my groaning is not hidden from thee.
9 All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you.
10 (37-11) My heart is troubled, my strength hath left me, and the light of my eyes itself is not with me.
10 My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes.
11 (37-12) My friends and my neighbours have drawn near, and stood against me. And they that were near me stood afar off:
11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away.
12 (37-13) And they that sought my soul used violence. And they that sought evils to me spoke vain things, and studied deceits all the day long.
12 Those who want to kill me set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they scheme and lie.
13 (37-14) But I, as a deaf man, heard not: and as a dumb man not opening his mouth.
13 I am like the deaf, who cannot hear, like the mute, who cannot speak;
14 (37-15) And I became as a man that heareth not: and that hath no reproofs in his mouth.
14 I have become like one who does not hear, whose mouth can offer no reply.
15 (37-16) For in thee, O Lord, have I hoped: thou wilt hear me, O Lord my God.
15 LORD, I wait for you; you will answer, Lord my God.
16 (37-17) For I said: Lest at any time my enemies rejoice over me: and whilst my feet are moved, they speak great things against me.
16 For I said, “Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.”
17 (37-18) For I am ready for scourges: and my sorrow is continually before me.
17 For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me.
18 (37-19) For I will declare my iniquity: and I will think of my sin.
18 I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.
19 (37-20) But my enemies live, and are stronger than I: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.
19 Many have become my enemies without cause ; those who hate me without reason are numerous.
20 (37-21) They that render evil for good, have detracted me, because I followed goodness.
20 Those who repay my good with evil lodge accusations against me, though I seek only to do what is good.
21 (37-22) For sake me not, O Lord my God: do not thou depart from me.
21 LORD, do not forsake me; do not be far from me, my God.
22 (37-23) Attend unto my help, O Lord, the God of my salvation.
22 Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior.
